the foxconn factory is all stitched leather

lag∞n, Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:20 (eleven years ago) link

xp yeah i was thinking this might be the first rev that doesn't have basically 100% uptake within weeks

would that affect app development at all?

caek, Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:27 (eleven years ago) link

I open up my wallet, and it is full of Jon Ive's sick.

A+

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:29 (eleven years ago) link

yeah despite my good experience w/ the new app, the maps thing is a major misstep

being able to access the google maps via browser is a workaround but I don't think it has the integration into contacts and such?

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:32 (eleven years ago) link

my kids had a ball last night alternately confusing and insulting siri on the ipad 3

or directions or streetview.

caek: yeah, there are a ton of useful APIs in iOS6 that I think people have been hoping to use, and none of them will get looked at if the market starts fragmenting.

stet, Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:34 (eleven years ago) link

just saying that your enthusiasm for that particular feature is misplaced

xp to s1ocki

it's misplaced because you already had that feature? how does that make any sense? i didn't have it!

You had the wrong phone is the point.

I mean, may as well own an HD-DVD player, fools.

Perhaps the most infamous culprit of this design direction is Apple’s Game Center, the social-gaming app that’s dressed in a lacquered wood and green felt that lends it the feel of a casino. "Steve pushed very hard to have everything--the felt-cloth table, the game chips--look like they would in real life," says another former Apple designer. "Internally, a lot of people were shocked by the richness. Many think it’s gone too far."

it looks like a home computer game from the 80s, and not in a charming way

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:40 (eleven years ago) link

Game Center is one of the fugliest things I've ever seen

will be funny to find out that apple execs and sales reps are showing up late for meetings because they can't find their hotel, customer offices, etc

606 articles on google news about "iphone google maps"

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:46 (eleven years ago) link

so this maps business seems like less of a deal if you live where i do (ie - not a lot of public transit to misplace, in america so the mistakes will likely be addressed before the rest a yous)

out of curiosity: anyone use the chrome browser on iOS? i use it on my ipad and greatly prefer it

catbus otm (gbx), Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:47 (eleven years ago) link

I've been using both since chrome was released and haven't made my mind up. neither are perfect.

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:49 (eleven years ago) link

tried it to get around the tab reloading problem, seemed slower n clunkier than safari.

ledge, Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:49 (eleven years ago) link

*is perfect

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:49 (eleven years ago) link

I've been using Chrome for about a month now -- no issues, far more responsive than Safari was.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:50 (eleven years ago) link

lol at some of these articles

“Mapping is probably the biggest weakness of iOS 6, but it’s still a relatively minor weakness,” Gartenberg said. “Two million customers have already said it’s not an issue.”

yeah they also haven't received their phones yet

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:52 (eleven years ago) link

haha

lag∞n, Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:53 (eleven years ago) link

pls pls let fedex be using ios maps to deliver phones

stet, Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:55 (eleven years ago) link

i die a little inside every time i see calendar on the ipad.

It pisses me off that notes/reminders are so fugly, because they are the only notes/todo apps taht update in the background

stet, Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:55 (eleven years ago) link

maps on iphone used to be terrible - I remember traveling with some folks in early 2010 and being very thankful I had my blackberry - but obv this is a bad time to cede map dominance to google. apple's got enough money to map every inch of the planet by hand tho don't they?

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:03 (eleven years ago) link

haha a friend of mine is currently having a meltdown over how terrible Apple's maps are, it is delighting me

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:04 (eleven years ago) link

a huge change here is that they're being so massively ridiculed over them. The whole antennagate stuff was lame jabs and butthurt whining, this is just "lol apple". I bet they can't stand that.

stet, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:09 (eleven years ago) link

guys apple and google are very likely using the same basic datasets for their maps

catbus otm (gbx), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:18 (eleven years ago) link

*gasps*

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:19 (eleven years ago) link

kinda depends on what you mean by basic and who cares when the user experience deviates so wildly

lag∞n, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:20 (eleven years ago) link

the dataset............

max, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:23 (eleven years ago) link

lag∞n, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:25 (eleven years ago) link

google's got a set of data they've been refining and updating for years and years, apple's using tom tom's data now

apple can fix annoying stuff like having to type "brothers" instead of "bros" to find a business, but if it doesn't know the correct coordinates for your address, or that a street or business no longer exists, welp

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:27 (eleven years ago) link

hoping there's some sweet death race 2000 style action between google's steetview cars and the apple carts in the future

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:30 (eleven years ago) link

seems like googles big advantage long term in maps is that theyre a search company

lag∞n, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:31 (eleven years ago) link

wonder if googles just waiting long enough for apple to get some bad publicity before they drop their ios app

lag∞n, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, no doubt at all I think

has apple ever had a successful server-side service? ever? apart from the stores, I guess.

stet, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

messages?

lag∞n, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:35 (eleven years ago) link

google whistling idly while they enjoy the smell of apple's flesh in the fire

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:37 (eleven years ago) link

messages was down for a day or so last week, and has some shocking delays sometimes.

stet, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:40 (eleven years ago) link

lag∞n, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:41 (eleven years ago) link

did you guys know that apple has a magic web page on apple.com, and when it's not available no iOS users can use wifi

hot slag (lukas), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:43 (eleven years ago) link

http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2012/09/how-google-builds-its-maps-and-what-it-means-for-the-future-of-everything/261913/

ok reading this and yeah, apple is cooked, there's just no way they can match this

catbus otm (gbx), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:44 (eleven years ago) link

Ha, Google themselves haven't updated yet:

http://www.google.com/mobile/iphone/

Go down to the link to Google Maps and click.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:47 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, that web page was down for 30 minutes last night and casued chaos
