New Apple Lust Objects for 2010 and onward

there I was thinking the mapocalypse was merely a series of glitches and at worst an inferior solution that would improve over time. now that it has actively fucked over this evening AND my plans for tomorrow morning, I can now see that this is very genuinely the biggest software clusterfuck of the 21st century.

we went to inspect a flat that mapocalypse listed in two separate locations, neither of which is correct. we can't even use street view to work out where it is. two days ago that would have been fine.

recently I've been recommending the galaxy s iii to people, and now my recommendation will only widen to everyone who isn't learning chinese and doesn't have accessibility requirements.

are you aware of http://maps.google.com/ ?

i have maps.goo.etc.etc in chrome, that's fine, that does the job 82% of the time, but as soon as i open say a real estate app and look for a flat that's in the fucking ocean it all falls apart

does lex have an iphone?

My 5 just got delivered. Activation took less than 5 minutes (on O2). Can't work out how to open the little box with the earpods in it.

Half the time I use the Google Maps app for visual directions, which aren't offered in the mobile browser version, so that's not a solution for me.

Anyway, I'm pretty hopeful we'll get a standalone Google Maps iOS app soon, and then we'll have world peace.

mostly. apps will still be using apple's maps by default, unless they go out of their way (my prediction is that many will go out of their way).

Not that bothered by the thought of losing integration. I usually use it as a standalone app.

I use it mostly from the calendar app.

Android's ability to connect apps is much better than Apple's, sadly. If they used the same system this wouldn't be an issue

AA's maps complaints may sound like #firstworldproblems, but apple is going to pay some price for underestimating its importance. I have to decide which mobile devices are going to be part of a corporate standard this year, and I can't send field sales reps out into the world with a half-assed map solution. that's a deal breaker.

it's unfortunate cuz I'm not a big android fan, blackberrys are going the way of the whale, and I can't wait to see the tumbleweeds rolling through the aisles of the windows phone app store. had high hopes for iphone 5.

yeah this whole Maps business has not only convinced me not to update my iphone 4 but comforted me in my reluctant conclusion that I might as well wait for iPhone 5S or 6 to upgrade

the maps kerfuffle will be long forgotten in six months and apple will have sold more iphone 5s than any other model to date, which is not to say its not a big fuck up

i mean aa recommending android to others then getting an iphone himself is p illustrative of the nature of peoples complaints

yeah if they allow a google maps app, who cares

the weather app that comes with ios is a frosty turd, but the only annoyance is that they don't let me delete it

im sure also their maps app will get better, how fast and how better is unclear

having a default shitty maps app is a big problem no matter how many other ones are available

Of course, purposefully scratching a device is a bit extreme, but daily usage of any phone will generate some wear and tear. This may be a concern if you are particularly sensitive to the issue.

Probably works fine in San Francisco, it's likely the only place it's been extensively tested.

just out of curiosity I put my high school into Maps and you get directed to the OLD high school, which is now a middle school

also dude who wrote the stunning review was in Boston!

at least I know Maps knows where Highland Kitchen is

looks like Apple needs to pay their yearly upgrade fee to TomTom for this year's maps

once in rural France my gps took me onto a dirt road alongside a river, & the road kept getting smaller & smaller until it ended in a creek

in that creek I saw an iphone floating

otoh it knows where jjj's shop is

one time i was driving through the middle of nowhere canada and tomtom kept telling me to turn right, toward the north pole

What I can't quite grasp is: if the maps data is TomTom's, why aren't there more complaints about their satnav devices? I used to have one and it seemed pretty good. Maybe we're just more demanding when it comes to smartphones.

this is a non-issue, if you don't put your phone in a case you are a disgusting savage anyway

selling a device that then needs another device to be put on top of it is so fd up, of course it doesnt actually need a case and people who use them are a bit odd

yeah having my first real iphone the case thing befuddles me: doesn't a case ruin the virtue of their being so thin & light?

the annoying thing about cases is that you have to take them off to put your phone in the cradle in your car

hey i bought this expensive thing and a big part of its cost has to do w/how small it is, i think ill make it bigger
