I just heard Jack U Off for the first time yesterday. What a strange song.

There's a Robyn cover of that, iirc.

weird pov-shifting going from the title alone, like "if i was your girlfriend"

clouds, Friday, 21 September 2012 23:54 (eleven years ago) link

There's word that the Sunday night New Power Generation show at the House of Blues is going to be a warmup...

canonical casual cordouroy (Eazy), Saturday, 22 September 2012 00:00 (eleven years ago) link

Pretty sure that's a given. Andy Allo is headlining, backed by the NPG. Prince produced and co-wrote much of her new album, and she sings back-up with him.

Still can't wrap my head around the fact that Prince will reportedly have an 11-piece (!) horn section.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 22 September 2012 05:24 (eleven years ago) link

There's a Robyn cover of that, iirc.

That's how I first heard it. I didn't know of it before and I thought it was a strange departure from her usual. I listened to the Prince original next. Nuts.

Love the idea of people discovering classic Prince in 2012. Kids ...

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 22 September 2012 14:56 (eleven years ago) link

Fwiw I'm pretty sure I heard the Robyn version first as well, in 2005.

Sandy Denny Real Estate (jaymc), Saturday, 22 September 2012 16:11 (eleven years ago) link

Just funny to me. We're not talking self-titled or "For You." "Jack U Off" is on "Controversy"!

Might I recommend "Dirty Mind" to all you slackers? "1999?" "Sign o the Times?" They're really good!

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 22 September 2012 17:30 (eleven years ago) link

trying to find "in love" off of "for you" which apparently doesn't exist on the internet at all

clouds, Saturday, 22 September 2012 17:36 (eleven years ago) link

Dirty Mind is the shit.

DX Dx DX (dan m), Saturday, 22 September 2012 18:09 (eleven years ago) link

Worth it for "Uptown" and "When U Were Mine" alone.

The Black Album, too, as long as we're listing stone classics.

Also, I am not sure who else to tell about this weird experience I had, so I will tell you:

I went to a festival event at the Hare Krisna temple in my hood on Saturday. I will freely admit that I went for the music, but I was not disappointed on any level. There was a guy chanting with a harmonium, and a few drums/other percussive instruments going at pretty much all times. It was v enjoyable on that level. There were a lot of things to look at, and people were going here and there preparing for a large feast (to which the public was not invited). There was also a credit-card friendly donation machine, and we took our shoes off upon entering. I accidentally sat on the men's side of the room, and didn't realize it until I'd say about 15 min had passed. Wow. There were people dancing, but all women and children, and not with much vigor (with a few exceptions, including one very excited young lady of 6 or so, and a 20-something male of indeterminate origin)

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 24 September 2012 04:00 (eleven years ago) link

It was enjoyable; I'm glad I went. Still, I can't help wondering what's going on in there.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 24 September 2012 04:03 (eleven years ago) link

And you are hairless now?

canonical casual cordouroy (Eazy), Monday, 24 September 2012 05:16 (eleven years ago) link

Ew! No. Most of the people there were wearing street clothes, but there were a few monks/devoted people (all men, maybe a dozen max?) who were wearing the drapey sheets and had the haircut. A few women and children were wearing sparkly decorative saris though.

Also, bad news about Alan Salami

This is from the ad for his new class

We will practice self-image building and power communication skills. Alan Salmi LCSW is an NLP Master Practitioner and Psychotherapist. He specializes in assisting people to learn new mental skills to transform their lives. Mat. Fee: $10

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 24 September 2012 13:40 (eleven years ago) link

That is bad news. But just think - has ever a typo brought so many so much joy?

carl agatha, Monday, 24 September 2012 14:07 (eleven years ago) link

I still hear his name right before the Verlaine Verlaine Verlaine Verlaine Verlaine part of Death and the Maiden.

I guess that typo has been a fruitful gift.

Ha, that Prince protegee, Andy Allo, who was booked at the House of Blues Sunday night, with the NPG as special guest? She went on 2.5 hours late, and then literally just played her new CD. As in, off the CD, over the PA. Then at the end, she and the band sang one song. No Prince. Hilariously bad form, protegee.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 September 2012 14:41 (eleven years ago) link

people bought a ticket for that?

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 24 September 2012 14:47 (eleven years ago) link

Well I'm guessing, from the sounds of it, that it wasn't billed as "Prince protegee will play her album over the PA".

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 24 September 2012 14:50 (eleven years ago) link

They bought a ($35 + blues charger) ticket because Time Out and others were saying it was definitely a Price warmup show...

canonical casual cordouroy (Eazy), Monday, 24 September 2012 14:52 (eleven years ago) link

that is super lame
i'd be pissed if i paid $35 to listen to a CD 2.5 hours late

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 24 September 2012 14:52 (eleven years ago) link

It was billed as a listening party, with special guest the NPG. There was a band there, and all the gear. She's a singer and guitarist. And yet ... she played the CD over the PA. And then she and the band played one song. That's super lame.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 September 2012 14:56 (eleven years ago) link

hahaha oh wow

DX Dx DX (dan m), Monday, 24 September 2012 14:56 (eleven years ago) link

Like, if Prince's whole band is there, and it's the night before Prince plays six shows in Chicago, three of them at the same venue as this show, why wouldn't you at least make the leap that it could be a warm up show? I would have assumed that before I assumed it would be literally just standing there listening to a CD. Who charges that much money to listen to a CD?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 September 2012 14:57 (eleven years ago) link

I have never even heard of such a thing, much less one that was not already established as some kind of group listening experience "thing" like Zaireeka or w/e.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:05 (eleven years ago) link

Or those "listen to Popol Vuh in a far out rural church" events.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:06 (eleven years ago) link

But you know what they say: if you make an assumption, you look like an ass and the ump will shun you.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:07 (eleven years ago) link

"listen to Popol Vuh in a far out rural church"
even writing that makes me happy

paying $35 to hear a CD from an artist i have never heard before?
don't like

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:09 (eleven years ago) link

There've been a few times that the Hideout or Schubas have had listening parties the day a new album comes out (and Tower Records at Clark/Deming would do it at midnight on Monday nights when new records were released). I like the idea of going to a bar and hearing a new, anticipated record in full. (Not for $35.)

canonical casual cordouroy (Eazy), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:10 (eleven years ago) link

What else would a "listening party" be? Like I understand people guessing Prince might play but there's obviously a risk in that guess so I'd say buyer beware.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:11 (eleven years ago) link

http://timeoutchicago.com/music-nightlife/music/15713026/andy-allo

Cameroonian songbird Andy Allo also happens to be Prince's latest protégée and backup singer. That she's appearing at the HOB one day ahead of the Purple Yoda's three-night stand at United Center is a strong sign ("O" the times) that a warm-up set is in store.

canonical casual cordouroy (Eazy), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:14 (eleven years ago) link

Fwiw I know a lot of Prince stans that would've probably bought tickets for that just in the slightest hopes that he might show up. I'll have to ask around to see if they did.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:14 (eleven years ago) link

My guess is that the protege and band and everyone else thought Prince would show up, the delay was everyone waiting and hoping he would, but he decided he didn't feel like it because he's Prince.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:15 (eleven years ago) link

What else would a "listening party" be? Like I understand people guessing Prince might play but there's obviously a risk in that guess so I'd say buyer beware.

Because the whole fucking band was there? Forget Prince; at the least I would have expected her to perform the album. But no.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 September 2012 15:27 (eleven years ago) link

That would be a concert, not a listening party.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:29 (eleven years ago) link

I think the issue here though is how and where you saw the announcement. That Time Out thing Eazy linked to never uses the words "listening party". I don't think I've seen the actual ad though.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:31 (eleven years ago) link

It's one thing to bill it as a listening party, it's another to bill it as a listening party, featuring special guests the NPG.
