Kind of surprised that my whole neighborhood (mear Torndale/Sheridan) is shown as one gang, when earlier maps showed different gangs to the north and south of Thorndale.

Oh cool. I think it was Chicago Magazine that did the most comprehensive gang map previously and that's been a while. Looking forward to checking this one out more closely.

Have you folks heard of EARTHA KITT?

She has new stuff? Hm.
But yeah, she's been around forever. Played Catwoman on TV for a while. Extremely distinct voice.

Wow. Apparently she has been around forever! Maybe the video is old b/c she did not look to be near 80.

Oh. I thought Jesse was kidding when he asked if we'd heard of Eartha. There was a while when the "wear your seatbelt" ads in NYC taxis were voiced by her, it was pretty awesome.

Not so dramatic as the Green line. I just got on the Brown line and rode around the Loop instead of getting on the Purple and GingTFO.
Thank you! I love new frontiers. I'm even enjoying dressing like a lawyer, for now, although I've got a plan in place to increase the size of the earrings I wear until the Friday when I will bust out The Big Hoops.

I wore a sheath dress with a black and white houndstooth print and a cowl neck (which I would not have worn had I known a partner was taking me to lunch, since there is nothing like a cowl neck for catching dropped food... luckily I made it through unscathed), a black cardigan, black flats, and PANTYHOSE but that was just because it was like 40 degrees in the morning and climbing to high 60s/70 in the afternoon which made it too cold for bare legs and too warm for tights.
TBF that dress is a couple years old and I've worn it to my old job lots. It's more like I'm just temporarily removing some of my more audacious outfits/accessories from circulation until I get settled in. Like, at my old job instead of pantyhose, I would have worn knit thigh high socks in the morning and taken them off in the afternoon, but I'm saving that weirdness for later. I'm thinking I can probably bust out the hot pink tights by February, as long as there's no client meetings scheduled.

He and his guitar appeared to be on the outs most of the night. The singer picked it up briefly during “Purple Rain” and teased the audience: “Can I play this thing?” Instead of a solo, he played a handful of notes and set the instrument back down

http://timeoutchicago.com/music-nightlife/audio-file-blog/15720871/prince-fans-demand-refunds-after-first-purple-after-jam-at-
Attendees whose expectations were inflated by $75 ticket prices and a patience-testing wait of several hours didn't hear a single note of live music until around 3am. Prince protege and backup singer Andy Allo, beset by some early microphone feedback, performed several bouncy songs with the New Power Generation. Then, just after 3:30am, she said goodnight and the club's patchwork curtain closed to the audible bewilderment of those in attendance.

I don't mean to say that it was a bad show, it was a good time. But when you add up starting over an hour late, not singing half of the songs (asking the crowd to sing is already a pet peeve of mine -- "let me hear you" = bullshit, we came here to hear YOU), the muddy sound (the horn section was off all night, and I would guess his guitar non-playing was a tech issue b/c it really sounded like shit) and then the BS with the incredibly delayed non-encore-until-an-hour-later... it just left a bad taste in my mouth and those of everyone we sat with.

They played a few bars of "Darling Nikki" and went right into another song, so it seems like raunch-trolling is the new standard.

The U.S.'s ranking in broadband accessibility and speed is a pretty sorry thing, IIRC. It will be awesome if the ambition behind this project keeps up and we actually get service in underserved areas. And it would be nice to give Comcast some competition.

Right before Katrina, New Orleans had started a city-wide free public wifi project. It was still partly operational in the central business district and a few other places when I was down there and it was really nice.

nice being able to get free wifi in places where you could sit and work for free, like plazas, sidewalk benches, and porches. And from indoor spots near windows.
― (*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 16:57 (eleven years ago) link
It was a bad show, that Prince. He didn't "play" a tease of "Darling Nikki," or many other songs. He was sitting by a sampler, singing over short clips of about a dozen classics. During this his band, which was mysteriously down half its members, was literally just sitting there, waiting for him. The sound was awful, he picked up his guitar no more than twice, ceded to solo in "Purple Rain" to a saxophone, then kept the crowd waiting at the end for 30-40 minutes, in the dark, while a crew swept the stage of confetti. Then the house lights went on, 80% of the crowd left, and then he comes back out for "1999" and "Little Red Corvette."
House of Blues as a 4am curfew. He knows that shit. He let his lame protege play 3am to 3:30, then cut the show when the cops made it clear they were handing out thousands in fines for going over. He didn't play a note or even appear except to say the cops were shutting him down. Dude needs to buy a watch.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 17:08 (eleven years ago) link
I'm skeptical of the wifi plan.
It was great when I was in Hong Kong and you could get wifi in public parks. Saved me many times when I needed to pull up a map.
