man i hope this shows up in the mail today, i'm going to be a little laid up this weekend (via sciatic nerve issues) and need something immersive.

;_;

shipped days ago too, why did i pre-order this shit

have a sandwich or ice cream sandwich (Jordan), Friday, 12 October 2012 16:14 (eleven years ago) link

sorry man. what kind of pre-order bonus do you get?

there is no dana, only (goole), Friday, 12 October 2012 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

"- Fencer [ sword vs sword advantage bonus ]
-Fire Water [ increased whiskey bottle explosions ]
-Blast Resistant [ reduces damage taken in explosions ]
-In-game Wolfhound Statue"

which i probably wont' install, sounds like it would just make things easier without any corresponding sense of achievement? although "increased whiskey bottle explosions" does sound pretty dope.

If it makes you feel any better, I preordered too, also don't have it yet, and didn't even get any bonusses.

JimD, Friday, 12 October 2012 16:24 (eleven years ago) link

where are yall preordering from that pull this kind of shit?

me, i just went and subjected myself to gamestop employee chitchat but have the game (and a deck of dishonored branded tarot cards?) in my glove compartment right now.

I just buy stuff at Best Buy.

Jeff, Friday, 12 October 2012 17:20 (eleven years ago) link

Oh it turns out mine came today after all but came THREE MINUTES after I left the house, and that was after me waiting in TWO HOURS for the postman before giving up on him. Ah well, probably wouldn't have time to play it this weekend anyway.

JimD, Friday, 12 October 2012 17:24 (eleven years ago) link

amazong. my fault for taking the free shipping.

there isn't a best buy/target/game stop etc in my daily commute, so i'd probably never get around to it otherwise.

I've fully invested in digital purchasing everything now, but it helps that I don't have a current-gen console to compete with it.

the max in the high castle (kingfish), Friday, 12 October 2012 17:51 (eleven years ago) link

amazong prime!! is the best thing.

so is it as important as reviews suggest to stealth it up and not kill people? or can i kill the occasional dude? my typical stealth approach is sneak sneak sneak and then murder a few people when it seems i can do so in a novel or entertaining manner.

also what is a reasonable time to duck out of work on a friday afternoon

adam, Friday, 12 October 2012 17:58 (eleven years ago) link

the game has a bunch of mutually exclusive achievements and endings (no killing, being unseen, killing a bunch, etc)

i know, it's s weird phenomenon, but apparently there are tons of people who are like "o shit i forgot to preorder" and they'll pay right after release day

though right now the going rate's only about $10, last week it would've been $15

Nhex, Friday, 12 October 2012 23:44 (eleven years ago) link

Bought this game. Pretty cool so far! The combat isn't floaty like in Skyrim. More engaged. The fact that you can either kill everyone or no one is great.

going super stealth low chaos good ending route (preferred play type in stealth games anyway)

Mordy, Sunday, 14 October 2012 01:14 (eleven years ago) link

I am going high chaos so far, mostly because I have made a few uh errors.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Sunday, 14 October 2012 01:20 (eleven years ago) link

There are a lot if empty bottles in this game.

I try stealth but I end up getting caught and killing everyone anyway.

Jeff, Sunday, 14 October 2012 02:09 (eleven years ago) link

the option to turn objective markers off is a fuckin brilliant innovation. i had to turn them back on for a second b/c the game wanted something really specific and it was totally jarring--like i was playing call of duty. i like it when dishonored is like, "go talk to havelock" and i have to traipse all over the level looking for him. old school shit.

adam, Sunday, 14 October 2012 15:35 (eleven years ago) link

this came over the weekend (yesss) and i binged on it yesterday, got through the prison and the first main mission. going stealth all the way, but i did kill a few people early on when i didn't know what i was doing/had no powers, and to help out semi-honest citizens.

i played that first assassination over and over -- first time i made it all the way out to the dock (with all this loot from the workshop etc) before realizing i was supposed to do something with the overseer's unconscious body, then i tried many times to pull off sleep-darting both the target and the dude you were supposed to save, then i settled for poisoning the target and hiding the other one in the 'safe' dumpster.

oh i'm going to try this. i love that there's not a map (right?), it's way more fun to wander around and try to figure out the layout of the city/buildings.

SPOILERS i branded that guy in the interrogation room

i did that once just to see it, but the guards found me right afterward. part of my problem was that i didn't know you could blink while carrying a body.

have a sandwich or ice cream sandwich (Jordan), Monday, 15 October 2012 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

anyone ever play arx fatalis? was it good?

Mordy, Monday, 15 October 2012 15:59 (eleven years ago) link

blink is so much fun to use.

Mordy, Monday, 15 October 2012 15:59 (eleven years ago) link

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

...

my 2nd run-through (already ha) i'm going more lethal "high chaos" but still decided to save that other dude. i flipped the poison, waited for that conversation to finish (the overseer succumbs) then sleep-darted the captain. as i carried the captain out on the exterior ledge, i overheard two guards talking about how the meeting is 'taking so long, better check'. i leave the captain on the ledge, go back in the room, grab the overseer's body, leave HIM hidden on the ledge, take the captain to the dumpster, and go from there. no alarms! really cool moment.

this is fun but the American accents in very British locations are jarring.

thomasintrouble, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 21:44 (eleven years ago) link

on mission 2, i found granny rags walking around in an alley with a bunch of weepers. seemed like she was chill with them, but once they spotted me they tore her apart? huh.

i'm finding that i don't mind missing out on the crazy murder-related powers and weapons, stealth vibes all the way.

have a sandwich or ice cream sandwich (Jordan), Monday, 22 October 2012 22:13 (eleven years ago) link

the gradual and escalating differences between violent and stealthy paths is pretty cool fyi. by the final mission things are very different.

goole, Thursday, 25 October 2012 16:21 (eleven years ago) link

playing this, I've remembered how bad I am at stealth. that's an ending I'm never gonna see.

thomasintrouble, Thursday, 25 October 2012 22:47 (eleven years ago) link

does the violent path get more difficult wrt combat? bc i found that stealth was very difficult (but satisfying to persevere) but when stealth failed i never had any trouble killing everyone (before reloading)

Mordy, Thursday, 25 October 2012 22:53 (eleven years ago) link

ha, i'm the opposite, i don't think i could even play this game violently. whenever i get in a fight i get shot in the back within about five seconds (i'm on the "return to the tower" mission btw).

NI, Monday, 10 March 2014 14:29 (ten years ago) link

hmm maybe i'll have to try Thief after all

festival culture (Jordan), Monday, 10 March 2014 14:35 (ten years ago) link

yeah its less about stealth and lots more about strategy and timing honestly. i hate stealth games but loved the way they did it in dishonored.

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Monday, 10 March 2014 15:10 (ten years ago) link

so far thief is very janky and obviously not the wide-open low-res low-poly-count playground of 1998 but it is a much better stealth game than dishonored. dishonored is better for creative slaughter but i still don't like its fingerwagging moralism or whimsical whale oil neil gaiman tapdance steampunk vibe.

adam, Monday, 10 March 2014 15:38 (ten years ago) link

thief's steampunk vibe is darker and somehow less annoying? i dunno. writing in both games is garbage, big surprise.

adam, Monday, 10 March 2014 15:40 (ten years ago) link

sounds like you didn't play dishonored as a stealth game!

festival culture (Jordan), Monday, 10 March 2014 16:01 (ten years ago) link

giving me all these fun tools for murdering people and then fussing at me for using them is imo a weird way to make a game/make a point about video violence and the lust for blood that lives within us as gamers or whatever.

adam, Monday, 10 March 2014 16:05 (ten years ago) link

well that and a clever way to make you do a couple playthroughs

goole, Monday, 10 March 2014 16:06 (ten years ago) link

i am enjoying being sneaky and not killing ppl if i can help it (have still merc'd a few in a panic, tho), but tbh i am looking forward to the prospect of str8 slaughtering everyone on a second playthrough

gbx, Monday, 10 March 2014 16:25 (ten years ago) link

no it's a valid point, you're just a bad person, nbd. :)

festival culture (Jordan), Monday, 10 March 2014 16:27 (ten years ago) link

really it was just luck that my play style (slow, not that good at combat, don't mind re-trying a section until i get it right) fit with the 'good' way of playing this game.

festival culture (Jordan), Monday, 10 March 2014 16:38 (ten years ago) link

i can dig that. blink is really one of the most fun things in a game in recent memory.

adam, Monday, 10 March 2014 16:53 (ten years ago) link

it felt very limiting to go from playing dishonored to far cry 3 and not be able to blink around.

festival culture (Jordan), Monday, 10 March 2014 16:59 (ten years ago) link

that first dlc (as daud) was great, prob more fun than the main game though much too short. 2nd dlc isn't as fun so far (2nd level in, in the streets where there's a war between two rival gangs) but still v glad i started this back up. is that the end of it all now or are they planning more dlc? i see dishonored 2 is being touted about so that's probably it, bah

quis gropes ipsos gropiuses? (ledge), Thursday, 17 November 2016 13:37 (seven years ago) link

i loved the first one and am excited for this one but yeah i never buy new games so it'll probably be a while before i play it

na (NA), Thursday, 17 November 2016 15:41 (seven years ago) link

this is pretty great. very similar to the first one but the level design might be even better. somehow it doesn't feel like 'fetch quests' when you're criss-crossing the same area for different objectives, and most of environments are so detailed.

also the tiny fonts on everything keep reminding me to make an appointment to update my glasses prescription.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 19:38 (seven years ago) link

yeah enjoying this. i am so bad at stealth tho. i get impatient or just press the wrong button and fire my gun, then all hell breaks loose. my character is already "high chaos". though on one level i did find a big pipe high up in the sky and strolled to the finish.

the tiny fonts thing is so fucking annoying and in every game. i have fairly good eyesight and don't wear glasses and it's maddening.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 22:43 (seven years ago) link

i'm going full stealth, no murders. at first i was constantly re-loading saves every time all hell broke loose. i still am, but it's happening slightly less frequently.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 22:56 (seven years ago) link

i feel like i generally don't have the time to play a game enough and get stealthy. it's also a bit emotionally/morally unintuitive - like in the second city by the docks i overheard some rotund jerk throwing his weight around at his workers, like threatening and hassling them, so far as videogame morality goes, i did the right thing by maiming him fatally and throwing him into the sea. but all the workers ran away screaming and i was the bad guy! sad!

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 22:58 (seven years ago) link

haha. that's very realistic!

i definitely save it for when i have a decent block of time to get into it, but you can deal with rooms or scenarios as smaller chunks, and i love that you can save at any moment.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 23:46 (seven years ago) link

i was a bit unimpressed by how it looked, to begin with, possibly in comparison to witcher 3, but there's definitely some really nice character to the buildings and the cities.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 1 December 2016 00:08 (seven years ago) link

looking forward to getting this, though i just dropped $$ for titanfall 2

plan to do one bloodless run-through with i guess corvo, and then a straight murderous run-through with emily
