should ilxors be tempbanned for taking their beefs to other social media? (twitter/fbook/myspace/etc)?

apparently if you really obviously say something derogatory about someone in a public venue where they'd be likely to read it and get that you are referring to them, they are going to respond to you?

Like if at some point we all die and find outselves at some moment of reckoning explaining to some higher being whether or not we've had a wasted life we're going to find it really difficult to explain why we spent a week of our lives arguing because someone called someone else a mansplainer on Twitter.

Matt DC, Thursday, 18 October 2012 19:28 (eleven years ago) link

I mean, unless Mordy did not correctly deduce that it was about him. It's been implied as such, but I guess it really could be about anyone

How about the mods make a decision about whether mentioning someone on other social media is tempbannable or not, state it, lock this thread, and no one mentions it again. I do not blame anyone for the current situation but the mods.

I use twitter the same way lots of people do - to externalise every passing thought that goes through my head over the course of a day.

Mostly, those thoughts are about Cornish grammar or drawings of sea arches or photos of dirty dronerock boys, but also rants about argh, OMG I hate the First Train Group so much or how terrible it is when my boss's idiot son mucks up a whole bunch of work I've just done, or some stupid politician and also, if an internet messageboard is annoying me at that moment. Stream of consciousness involves a whole bunch of different stuff, all going on at once. And most people who follow me on twitter are interested in Cornish grammar or Aphex twin records or ranting about politics, and we talk about it and commiserate and it's fine.

But when someone decides they want to follow me with the *sole purpose* of waiting for those occasional tweets where I mention ILX - who doesn't talk to me about my interests or @ me to even say hi, is not interested in the 95% of my tweets that is not about ILX, they are just looking for things to take out of context, and then immediately dash back to ILX to SHARE WITH THE WHOLE CLASS, omg, look at this ~DRAMA~ I have dug up!

Where is the drama in this situation? Me, for ranting about ILX in the same breath as ranting about First Train Group and Cameron and WTF is up with Thom Yorke's hair and my god this bus driver on the 109 is a cowboy? Or is the shitty move the person who goes digging, looking for something to get offended about (because I really have a hard time believing that e.g. Lagoon, who posted my twitter this afternoon, is interested in Cornish politics or Radiohead gifs) and goes running back to score brownie points?

If you want to be my actual friend on twitter, fine, talk to me. If you just want to rubberneck on the "crazy" and clutch your pearls about the drama you are salivating at the idea of catching, you're the dick in this situation. Not me.

And you know what? I'm going to go and screen grab the original tweet, which is still there, in the context of the stream, with the time and date on it. On Friday. Mordy's name is not in it. I did not name Mordy until Monday, after this shit blew up.

Are we circling around to the point where people don't understand that it is not cool to have a go at WCC on twitter? That the fact that you wouldn't mind if it happened to you isn't actually a defense because your experience and hers aren't the same? Are we getting back to faux-shock that when you kick the hornet's nest bad shit happens?

xp I see we are actually getting there.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 18 October 2012 19:30 (eleven years ago) link

Matt DC, if a mod had stepped in - after being given multiple opportunities - and spoken to this like adults, it would never have gotten to this point

It was pretty rude of WCC to do it but no sane mod would have taken any actual action because a) people say things that are equally rude and obnoxious shit to each other on the boards themselves every day and b) it doesn't actually matter that much.

frogbs, Thursday, 18 October 2012 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

fwiw this isn't a celebrity using someone's twitter handle and saying they're lame, which is bullying and bad -- this is someone using @name, which only is viewed-by-default by the person replied-to and any shared friends they have, and you have to go directly to their twitter page to see it otherwise

if you're not friends with someone on twitter, it's the common way there to message someone, as direct message only works if the person is following you

like, this is EXACTLY HOW YOU REPLY TO SOMEONE ON TWITTER, to be polite, not rude

so it's whether replying to someone in a normal way is rude, or if mentioning someone non-subtly without using their name is rude

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Thursday, 18 October 2012 19:35 (eleven years ago) link

Mordy, I agreed with you on the button thread until it all got warped and weird. but how on earth is this spat the fault of the ILX mods? you two just need your heads banging together and/or a decent adult conversation, and it's not for the mods to waste their spare time being your mummy and making sure you play nicely.

jesus christ Andrew, no one is saying she's totally in the wrong, just that Mordy -- even if he was prodding her, and being patronizing, which I'm willing to believe -- is replying a completely normal fashion, for that site, and there's nothing creepy about him having seen her tweet or him replying to it!
