"I'm serious"

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 October 2012 20:37 (eleven years ago) link

I think there's reasonable evidence for the first part of that, Alex, and the second is just hyperbole.

Also, now as always, fuck 'respectfully'.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 18 October 2012 20:38 (eleven years ago) link

I say no but then again I haven't had an extracurricular beef with anyone. If I'm getting on somebody's nerves i try to just step away from the thread and give it some air. If you are having a debate w someone about a subject and the two of you disagree to the point where it's getting nasty, there's not really much point in pursuing it, as it's clear neither side is going to come to an agreement.

Btw is there any way to check if you've been sb'd?

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 18 October 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link

i just read the "button" thread again. this whole thing turns on a technical question of whether a discussion of "willingly causing yourself to not exist" can/should include discussion of suicide, and/or whether a thread starter can dictate terms of a thread.

WCC told the thread that she started that, no, you can't talk about suicide here.

Mordy disregarded that (so did others, so did i!) and brought up "death of the author" and thread ownership, said he "disagreed" with WCC about what WCC's thread was even about. this is the "mansplaining" part.

and it devolved from there. i mean, that's it. does anyone dispute that?

the irony is that the discussion was pretty good before, during and after it got heated. and suicide continued to be discussed.

should ilxors be banned at the stake for taking their beefs to other social media?

--bob marley (lag∞n), Thursday, 18 October 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link

I'm serious = DO NOT START A POLL THREAD.

"Burned at the stake" is a metaphor. (Though I'm not so sure this is always the case, given some of the creeptastic hate mail I've had over the years.)

AF, do you think k3vin k hates jon too? It's a message board for crying out loud. No one is that invested in anyone else as a "person". At worst I think you can argue people think WCC is an annoying poster.

u were pretty much ignored until your friend caused it to be brought up on Monday.

velko, Thursday, 18 October 2012 20:44 (eleven years ago) link

Wrote this 30 minutes ago then chickened out on posting it, but fuck it:

I'm really uncomfortable with the idea that it's libelous to call someone a misogynist now (whether you agree with the appellation or not, it is not good to set any kind of precedent that disallows someone from calling out someone's misogyny/racism/etc. using the vocabulary available to them, ESPECIALLY when it is of the controversial or insidious type where a lot of people will deny that it could possibly be any kind of offensive). Calling someone a misogynist is an opinion, not an accusation of specific dastardly action and whether people think WCC "abuses" the term or not is not really relevant to the discussion.

Also, as someone who follows WCC on twitter, she really didn't mention Mordy by name until AFTER he brought up twitter on that other thread.

No comment on the rest of this.

Melissa W, Thursday, 18 October 2012 20:44 (eleven years ago) link

i think if this question is always on your mind and you think "it's ok this is just an impossible hypothetical and i'm not actually contemplating suicide" you're basically fooling yourself that your mental state is better than it is.

("you" = impersonal, would have used "one" but it reads funny.)

she really didn't mention Mordy by name until AFTER he brought up twitter on that other thread.

so what really? she was talking about him there, he talked about her talking about him here, and she doubled down.

zvookster, Thursday, 18 October 2012 20:50 (eleven years ago) link

If we're going to talk about timelines: this was the first thing I read after a weekend away from ILX. What I thought was going to be a jokey piss-take thread laughing at indie-rock because that's never not funny. And this is clearly Mordy's idea of leaving sleeping dogs lie:

@hateindierock - opposed to the bourgeois selfish privilege orgy that is modern corporate youth culture worldwide

This was when I tweeted the "I see you're still reading my twitter you creep" tweet, because he was still bringing it up on unrelated threads, and trying to round up beef. And given he was, indeed, still reading my twitter looking for beef, as proved by his taking that quote and posting it, I felt kinda vindicated tweeting it.

White Chocolate Cheesecake, Thursday, 18 October 2012 20:52 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe this is just my bropinion but it's kind of a hurtful thing to say, especially when gender issues were basically nowhere to be found on the original argument

frogbs, Thursday, 18 October 2012 20:54 (eleven years ago) link

I don't understand how anyone can definitively speak to whether she mentioned me by name and deleted it or not, even if you subscribe to her twitter.

http://i45.tinypic.com/2i6jszs.png

Do you think I'm lying and I was planning this subterfuge all the way back on Friday just to spring it on her today? Why would I do that?

Mordy, Thursday, 18 October 2012 20:54 (eleven years ago) link

you were tweeting, publicly, about mordy -- how is it "creepy" for mordy to want to read that?

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 18 October 2012 20:54 (eleven years ago) link

WCC: Mordy had written a post and Sick Mouthy wrote some completely random post about how hated he was; it made literally no sense to me until he made the post you linked here.

So, yes he was talking about you, after someone who was defending you attacked him on a wholly unrelated thread. That's not really Mordy singlehandedly, obsessively prolonging the argument.

Is ILX a free-for-all?

Ilx is light on moderation, so if you're going to post here a lot there's a sort of responsibility not to be an arsehole or act destructively. Try to keep personal slams against other posters to a minimum, and if you start not enjoying it take a break rather than try to stop other people enjoying it too. That's all fairly obvious really.

boxall, Thursday, 18 October 2012 21:02 (eleven years ago) link

I feel like, because of how the conflict on the original thread occurred, you are both emotionally invested in seeing the worst motive behind each others actions and responding to that, generating this neverending feedback loop of awful where perceived and actual motive move closer and closer to reality.

The Owls of Ja Rule (DJP), Thursday, 18 October 2012 21:03 (eleven years ago) link

I did not mention you by name. I have posted the entire timeline around that time, which shows that you were not mentioned by name. At least two people who follow me confirm that I did not mention you by name. And all you can do is link to a picture of a post of you talking about it?

This whole argument erupted because you were putting words in my mouth.

You took a question I asked, and explained it back to me, in a way which I did not intend it to be taken - even after I had explicitly stated the way I did and did not intend for it to mean.

And now here you are, putting words in my mouth yet again.

This can't be restated enough. The initial premise of all this was so innocuous it is insanity it turned into all this. "you cant talk about suicide" is fine to say. but ppl can and will ignore that. It doesnt make them mysogynists or mansplainers. *I* wanted to say the same thing!

FWIW, I didn't think Sick was "defending me" by posting his ditty. I thought he was saying that Mordy was being annoying on that thread. I'm not sure why anyone would take Sick's post to be about me in any way?

The post with Mordy's twitter handle is real. It was posted AFTER he started posting my twitter feed on ILX, and AFTER he started @'ing me on twitter. It was a response.

I felt very threatened by what he was doing. I responded to his tweet to show that I was not OK with what he was doing.

White Chocolate Cheesecake, Thursday, 18 October 2012 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

Your twitter feed has been posted on ILX previously though. When you've been trashing other ILXors on it, while it was public. Remember?

Mordy / Kate - why don't you both stop talking to or about each other and ignore other people's attempts to bait you into argument for the sake of entertainment.

I see that reading down later; Mordy definitely reacted as if it was and, tbh, I'd just clicked over to that thread to see what it was about and that exchange was the first thing I saw so I clicked off of it
