Harmon was fired as showrunner but he still works for the show as some sort of producer with a title and a paycheck but no real creative control. I'd like to think that he'll show up on the season 4 commentaries and that they'll be a thing of beauty.

i don't think that's true? thought he was going to be offered that sort of position but jumped ship completely

I have done bad. I love my pj's. (zachlyon), Monday, 22 October 2012 12:39 (eleven years ago) link

I think the deal was that he had the option of being some sort of active-yet-neutered participant in the show but opted to just sit back and play videogames because he was gonna get paid either way. I think he's still a producer.

false pie promises (Old Lunch), Monday, 22 October 2012 12:43 (eleven years ago) link

it's free money and he doesn't have to (and won't be asked to) do anything. Afaik he took the title and ran

Clay, Monday, 22 October 2012 12:44 (eleven years ago) link

And I don't blame him for deciding against being actively involved. He would've been relegated to a position akin to being a sex consultant to your ex's new boyfriend.

Oh fertheluvvachrist. ILX won't let me post a proper link why because brackets in the url. But:

brackets aren't universally-supported characters in URLs

Yeah, you'd think Gawker would be aware of that.

"I think he's still a producer." = "His name is still in the credits."

da croupier, Monday, 22 October 2012 15:48 (eleven years ago) link

chevy and jeong were definitely drags on season 3, since they're the biggest names they had to be shoehorned into stuff despite being entirely irrelevant after s2

da croupier, Monday, 22 October 2012 15:54 (eleven years ago) link

I guess that's the hard part of doing a live-action community building - it's not like simpsons writers have to find something for every harry shearer character to do in every episode. deadwood season 3 had a similar overpopulation problem.

da croupier, Monday, 22 October 2012 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

`yeah cy tolliver had clearly outlived his usage and while the brian cox arc clearly was gonna serve a purpose in season 4 as it is it's just so much agonizing filler (have no problems w/ any aspect of the hearst arc though i know some ppl hate how it resolved). sopranos sorta had this problem also, giving plotlines to tertiary characters and ruining their charm in the process (vito is the nadir of this but part of me is lukewarm w/ bobby bacala's fleshing out as well). mad men has managed to avoid this - weiner is pretty ruthless about jettisoning characters if they've outlived their use or the story demands it (though january jones is still out there, eating bugles). the wire as far as i can tell also managed to avoid this problem while doing the biggest community building of any live action show i can recall.

balls, Monday, 22 October 2012 19:39 (eleven years ago) link

I think the deal was that he had the option of being some sort of active-yet-neutered participant in the show

Neither NBC nor Sony have yet contacted him to tell him that he's not actually showrunner anymore, so that speaks to the level of "options" he has

Pierce was great in S3, it was S2 where they couldn't work out what to do with him.

mid-season schedule just released by nbc says community will air thursdays at 8, starting feb. 7

Community has always done best in that slot. (Best is a relative term, of course.)

He'll be in the final episode, but not a few of the lead-ups.

I'd say "good luck back in the career toilet, Chevy" but I'm not entirely sure that NBC hasn't relegated Community to the selfsame toilet at this point.

CHEVY + HAPPY...DOES NOT COMPUTE...BLEEP BLORP BLOOP

Chevy has seemed like the most uniformly miserable fucker in show business for 30+ years.

three weeks pass...

A friend on fb who works at Paramount just posted this, so it looks like the episodes in the can now are all we're gonna see.

Sad times at Greendale Community College--the "Community" actor's trailers are all gone, and their sets are bundled up and wrapped in plastic. They even took apart the faux-concrete walls around the Library exterior, which they have never done at the end of past seasons.

nickn, Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:00 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, demolition of sets is usually a signifier of the end.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:02 (eleven years ago) link

Although, this is the fourth season, and if they all graduate and plan to move beyond the Greendale setting like Harmon intended, this would make sense.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:03 (eleven years ago) link

That's definitely not a good sign. But, I guess Whiney'll be happy.

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:04 (eleven years ago) link

it's so weird and passive aggressive that they renewed it at all. hopefully these episodes are good, though.

xpost lol c'mon they were never really going to move the show outside the campus

some dude, Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:04 (eleven years ago) link

some dude otm, especially with Harmon out of the picture. they sure as hell weren't going to follow his "grand plan", if it even existed in the first place.

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:06 (eleven years ago) link

this show was/is great. it never deserved to get treated quite as badly as it did, by the network, the production company, its egotist creator and its cunty old barnacle of a "name star".

That symptom is fucking my wife (stevie), Thursday, 13 December 2012 08:16 (eleven years ago) link

OTM.

I think four seasons is enough though, artificially extending its run past a college course's natural lifespan would feel so forced.

Matt DC, Thursday, 13 December 2012 10:18 (eleven years ago) link

if cougar town's second life goes well on TBS or wherever they are, I wonder if community stands a chance at following suit (or if it could potentially platform hop to somewhere like hulu or netflix). then again I kinda wonder if most of the cast isn't ready to move on to movies or furthering their rap careers.

a robotic squirrel named RoboSquirrel (reddening), Thursday, 13 December 2012 10:22 (eleven years ago) link

sony seems to hate community more than nbc does, i imagine that's a bigger problem than having a station to air the show

THE NATIONS YOUTH DANCED TO THE MACARANA (innocent) (zachlyon), Thursday, 13 December 2012 10:25 (eleven years ago) link

Kinda wondering why such a big deal was made of Chevrolet leaving if there were only going to be two episodes after he was gone.

President Keyes, Thursday, 13 December 2012 11:06 (eleven years ago) link

prob b/c it's simultaneously insanely unprofessional and reaffirming of every bad thought everyone ever had of chevy
