my concern was (and is) that art/drawing/sketching/writing apps weren't fast enough on the 3, and that devs who were optimising their apps will suddenly go 'oh good no fine we don't have to fix our apps anymore'

that said, I've already had 7–8 months out of my 3 and am still happy with it

real apple fans only buy even-numbered releases anyway

I don't get why they're still selling the two-generations-old iPad 2 which looks antiquated next to the less-expensive Mini - it's almost as big and same resolution, weighs half as much, has vastly better cameras, LTE rather than 3G, Bluetooth 4, and Siri. Much better deal IMO.

www.toilet-guru.com (silby), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 23:43 (eleven years ago) link

xp to lee: it sells. also, the mini has reduced utility. it just does. typing will be even more cramped than it is on a maxipad, and art apps will be less accurate (i.e. fingers won't be shrinking).

As always it depends on what you use it for. As a gamer, I find that many games are harder to play on the iPad because the increased size makes it harder to do things as quickly as I could on the iPhone do to the greater distance between objects.

due to, rather

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 23:50 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, the minipad will appeal to a whole separate (but not exclusive) range of customers, especially those who read books, those who play certain types of games, those who are 7yo and go to school &c.

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 23:52 (eleven years ago) link

i just think the relatively small cost increment to the ipad 4 is so easily worth it for anyone who wants a full-sizer.

actually, ipad 3 refurbs from the apple online site are really going to be the best deal in the coming months

Lee626, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 23:59 (eleven years ago) link

grandparents will still want the bigger one.

dan selzer, Thursday, 25 October 2012 00:18 (eleven years ago) link

the funny thing is that I really want a minipad, even though the tech is decidedly old, the screen is not up to my requirements and I haven't a single reason to own one. fuck you apple.

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 25 October 2012 00:24 (eleven years ago) link

that article is awesomely entitled.

s.clover, Thursday, 25 October 2012 00:58 (eleven years ago) link

so this is what the new Lightning connector is really all about?

Lee626, Thursday, 25 October 2012 11:46 (eleven years ago) link

ok while we're talking of the joys of upgrading - quick semi-tech question: having been scarred by seeing my iPhone 3G fall into obsolescence after updating iOSes and apps, I'm now a bit paranoid about updating anything on my iP4 - should I worry about apps updates or are new iOSes the memory drains?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 25 October 2012 12:41 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, for the most part it's a oneway street when upgrading so you want to tread lightly. I've been running ios6 on my ip4 for a couple weeks now. battery life is weird, some days I end up having to charge halfway through the day, other times it lasts all day, and I'm kind of a hawk about killing apps I'm not using.

haven't noticed any issues with apps, maps is obv the problem but I've been using mapquest (which has free turn-by-turn voice features) or google maps thru safari if I have to look up an address. the biggest pain is not being able to hit maps straight from my contacts, but it's a minor one. I've only traveled in well mapped out areas so I haven't had any issues with apple's maps getting me lost, however its GPS integration stinks - it will suddenly put me on some other road and recalculate the route, have me slowly drift off the map, or not update my location at all.

being automatically able to text back a person whose call you can't take is pretty sweet tho.

space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 25 October 2012 15:22 (eleven years ago) link

plus I haven't upgraded an app and had it stop working, and I update things whenever ones available

this may change when apple launches the iphone 5s in january

space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 25 October 2012 15:23 (eleven years ago) link

or maybe they'll launch it in december, take advantage of that holiday rush

message sent from my obsolete ipad 3

space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 25 October 2012 15:25 (eleven years ago) link

yeah basically I've decided there was nothing to win much to lose from bringing myiP4 up to iOS6 - but now I'm wondering if I shoudl just stop updating apps altogether - I mean, the phone works fine as it is, so maybe I should just keep it like that and not touch anything?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 25 October 2012 15:34 (eleven years ago) link

well there's also some risk in not updating, if the app developers have made updates specifically for ios6 and you don't apply them. there was a flurry of app updates once ios6 was released and I've applied them all with no deleterious effect.

all this exciting talk about ipad minis has convinced me to buy a 32 gb nexus 7

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 27 October 2012 02:36 (eleven years ago) link

(i mean that earnestly; i played with a 16 gb nexus 7 last night and loved it)

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 27 October 2012 02:37 (eleven years ago) link

it'll supplement my other things, i won't be trading in my maxipad for it or anything

Even when I like something Microsoft does, they have to present it in the most awkward, worst way imaginable. Sales dudes practically yelling over the customer makes me think they're channeling Steve Ballmer :/

d-_-b (mh), Saturday, 27 October 2012 04:55 (eleven years ago) link

im using nexus 7 right now it's pretty cool but has a lot of problems. If money is not tight I would recommend getting the iPad.

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 27 October 2012 05:05 (eleven years ago) link

but I'm using one right now so

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 27 October 2012 05:17 (eleven years ago) link

really I just want an android device to play with (and pocket occasionally)

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 27 October 2012 05:17 (eleven years ago) link

same here but its pretty frustrating sometimes. one cool thing is you can get a very cheap adapter to attach usb keyboards etc...

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 27 October 2012 05:35 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, I'm expecting frustration (it *is* android), but 4.1 seems pretty mature and I just need to work with something that's not apple after ~4 years

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 27 October 2012 05:53 (eleven years ago) link

^^ this is pretty much the only reason I'm leaning towards a nexus too, and I think I've decided that's not reason enough.

JimD, Saturday, 27 October 2012 08:30 (eleven years ago) link

i've already had a windows 8 BSOD. iirc since 2004, across all the macs i've used, the equivalent has happened like 3 times? one of which was my fault heh heh

DG, Saturday, 27 October 2012 22:03 (eleven years ago) link

My main PC is Win7 and has only had one BSOD in two years of daily use, due to a stupid USB PCI card.

Even when I like something Microsoft does, they have to present it in the most awkward, worst way imaginable.

Microsoft can seemingly only do one of two things. Semi-reasonable product, shit marketing (XP/7). Shit product, semi-reasonable marketing (Me/Vista).
