Cardinal Mor4n!

random google morons who get all uppity because someone is hating on their 12th favourite indie rock band and list threads are the things that annoy me, moron-wise. I kind of blame gier for the list thread thing, though no doubt it was someone else who kicked that one off. I think there's the same amount of good stuff there as there always was, but the s/n ratio has got a lot worse recently.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 17 September 2005 08:20 (eighteen years ago) link

i've said it before and i'll say it again, ilm has made me way way listy. i never really cared about lists before. i wasn't much of a list-maker in that analobsessive rockcritiky way. i never thought about my top ten favorite boogie woogie artists or whatever. when in rome, i suppose...

i hate ilm too sometimes. mostly cuz i spend too much time on it. that brings out some nice self-loathing. but every time i see another message board/forum on the web devoted to music in some way i thank my lucky stars that i don't have to deal with the other morans out there in the real world! i am used to ilx morans.

I think your hunch / theory has some truth to it. (i.e. that 'theory' is effectively a language game in which knowing the rules, and participating in the conversation is central, and the actual names / terms in circulation could be switched for something else -- e.g. football / soccer without much changing, except that 'theory' talkers maybe share some kind of sense that what they're talking about is 'important' in a different way from the way football talk is 'important' [left unexplained here: important TO someone; important to the future of the universe; etc. different conversations will have different answers, clearly, which is why people take part in them, maybe, and could we explore the differences starting from this question?]) I don't think it's the whole truth, but I would have to think a bit before I could put my finger on what my reserveations are...

i don't really like lists myself, whether it's ten best whatevers or ilm's top whatevers of the noughties poll... but there's no reason to get angry about it!

mark i wanted to ask you if you've seen "the aristocrats" and what you thought of it. (i haven't)

ILX isn't like one joke told 100 ways, it's 100 jokes told in one boring way.

n million threads about dance/reggae/rap w/ people endlessly restating a few other people's views, w/o generally even thinking about it or bothering to know the music.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 September 2005 14:31 (eighteen years ago) link

it's like ILX has spawned this whole monstrous group of people who are more comfortable talking about things like "movements" "styles" and "genres" than they are talking about a fucking CD or song or artist or something.

I've never understood the hate directed at list threads. They're just fun time-wasters that don't need to be taken seriously. Top 100 songs with baby talk in the chorus? Why not? They're like the silly games you'd play in the car as a kid when you'd be on a long drive, except now you're grown up and it's the internet.

I'm a list freak but obv. lists != informed discussion.

n million threads about dance/reggae/rap w/ people endlessly restating a few other people's views, w/o generally even thinking about it or bothering to know the music.

This is why I generally avoid the big clusterfuck threads and prefer the smaller threads where ten people shoot the shit about Wolfgang Voigt.

This predates ILX though, no? I mean, what about literary critics who want to talk about "textuality" or "authorship" or whatever instead of actual specific books?

Jaxon (jaxon), Saturday, 17 September 2005 18:19 (eighteen years ago) link

aristocrats not as good as hoped. when the entire point of the movie is about what you learn about a comedian from their version of the joke, then you edit the hell out of everyone's rendition so at no point do you actually hear any comedian tell the joke from start to finish seems odd. Taylor Negron wins for funniest interviewee, though.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 17 September 2005 18:38 (eighteen years ago) link

they don't present their versions in full?

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 17 September 2005 18:40 (eighteen years ago) link

as an info service and a way to meet people who like some of the music I like ILM is pretty good, not that there are legions of new people coming in these days, but I don't really get the hate for ILM. If it gets boring I tend not to read it, the last week or two has been a bit quiet. I suppose I don't use it for serious argument/discussion anymore, I just read whatever the latest few threads about dance music are.

Why am I scaring you? You obviously do not really love music if you can't locate the electro/techno textures in Roni's work.
Some more suggestions on a rather more chilled, post-club comedown vibe:

Mantra ft Linda Oliviera - Lullaby
Groove Armada - Superstylin'
Lemon Jelly - Come
Playtime Toons - The Shaker Song
Different Gear vs The Police - When The World Is Running
Azido Da Bass - Dooms Night (Timo Maas Mix)
Bob Marley vs Funkstar Deluxe - Sun Is Shinin'

re: aristocrats, suprisingly no...I kept waiting for even ONE version, maybe what they decided was the definitive version, say Gilbert Gottfried's appearance at the Heffner roast or Bob Saget's lengthy and dirty dirty version, but nope. By all means it's worth watching, but it would've made a great 50 minute dvd or something.

he's been in every movie and tv show ever. I saw a stand-up thing once and it was more like a demented spaulding grey monologue.

I used to get him confused with Robert Romanus, who played Mike Damone in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Negron was only the pizza delivery guy in Fast Times.

I also used to get him mixed up with Dean Cameron from Summer School and Hot Dog and also a funny failed tv show where he was an alien.

http://www.deancameron.com/

Negron was the mailman in Better Off Dead.

Oh, I rarely heckle myself. But I do enjoy it. Not if its overdone, true. But I like the way it deflates the typical show dynamic a bit. My favorite example, I guess, is at the end of some bands set and before they went offstage to wait out the inevitable encore, some guy yelled "play another song you fucking faggots!" Admittedly not witty, but it made me laugh. Now that I think about it, I only really like it when there's a roomful of people all rapt over some sensitive soul up there sharing their intelligence and genius or whatever. I like seeing that deflated.
