That's really something about the vote turn-around! That seems suuuuuper shady.

If I want to feel kind, I'll say that the Commission thought they were throwing the preservationists a bone by saying, "yeah, it deserves to be a landmark, but run along now so the grownups can do what's right".

xpost Man, I would love a recording of August, but also the recent shows. Like I posted earlier, the only reason I didn't go to the latter was because the August show was so exceptional I didn't want anything impeding with my memory.

for those who haven't voted yet, this could be helpful. friend of a fb friend, wish it had been posted before i voted--

No problem, Josh, PM me and I'll either post rapidshare links of the FLACs for ya, or I can burn a few CDs and work out a drop off (would love to chat tunes anyways - you've always had some good posts/threads). I'm in Logan Sq.

BlackIronPrison, Friday, 2 November 2012 16:58 (eleven years ago) link

I'm going to use that, Julia.

Should I vote for or against electricity aggregation? I forget.

I'm eating a delicious pumpkin "empanada" from the cafe by my work which buys their pastries from Bleebing Hard Bakery. It is delish, but I don't know if I'm OK calling it an empanada.

Huh, apparently Glenn was forced out as owner of Glenn's Diner, which is now owned by "some guy named larry who is an electrician."

Could be worse. Could be the cable guy.

Not 100% certain I should believe that post, but, if true, it's kind of disturbing. What is glenn's without glenn?

Seems pretty fucked up and maybe I don't want to eat there anymore?

I've never eaten there, so I guess I won't start now.

One sided story. Would be interesting to see the other guys take.

Jeff, Saturday, 3 November 2012 17:16 (eleven years ago) link

I've only eaten there once. It was crowded!

Then in April 2009, Jones filed suit against Fahlstrom for undisclosed reasons, which taxed Fahlstrom personally and financially.

Do 1 research, jeez. http://www.state.il.us/court/opinions/appellatecourt/2011/1stdistrict/june/1103318.pdf <-2nd result on Google for "Glenn Fahlstrom lawsuit"

I hope the new restaurant has the amazing all-you-can-eat king crab legs b/c that amazing deal was amazing.

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Saturday, 3 November 2012 18:11 (eleven years ago) link

Cook County has shitty electronic court filing, so you'd have to pay for a copy of the papers in the original case.

Background starts on page 2 of the decision. It's not clear clear exactly what the long-running disagreement was about, but perhaps Jones wasn't as silent a partner as he was supposed to be. What we do know:

After fussin' and fightin' one evening, Glenn sold his interest in the restaurant to Jones for $1000, then quickly changed his mind and tore up the agreement he'd just signed. The lawsuit was based on the unenforceability of the agreement, the inadequacy of the $1000 consideration, and Glenn's asking for the whole thing to go to mediation and/or arbitration. Cook County judge said no arbitration, appellate court said yes arbitration.

So I guess the case went through arbitration sometime in 2011, which isn't public, but Glenn is out.

Do any of y'all know whether there is a centralized Chicago effort for sending donated stuff to NY? I'm thinking of Staten Island and other places that aren't getting Red Cross relief where they need batteries, work gloves, socks, warm clothes... stuff like that. It seems more efficient to donate to a larger effort than to send a box of stuff myself.

carl agatha, Sunday, 4 November 2012 23:35 (eleven years ago) link

But then again, I guess if there isn't, I would be willing to gather up stuff for a ChILX <3s NY donation drive if you all had some stuff you wanted to send.

carl agatha, Sunday, 4 November 2012 23:36 (eleven years ago) link

Oops. I just gave away a ton of stuff, including fleeces and sweaters, to the Brown Elephant. Sorry, NY.

But anyway, I don't know, sorry.

People with smart phones: may I recommend the HAILO cab app? It is basically a decentralized, electronic dispatch service. You sign in and add your credit card info (it lives on your phone, not in a cloud or anything), then "hail" a cab. The hail goes out over the Hailo network and a driver answers. Then you get the driver's name, cab number, and contact info, time until the cab arrives, and a map that shows you where the cab is. When you're done with your trip, you indicate how much tip and the app charges your card. Then you get an email receipt.

It's pretty amazing and convenient.

carl agatha, Monday, 5 November 2012 14:57 (eleven years ago) link

I used to try to use Taxi Magic to get cabs when I was in tight situations but that just contacts a specific company's dispatch service, which means you get a bullshit estimate on how long the cab will take to arrive and it gets cancelled on you.

carl agatha, Monday, 5 November 2012 14:59 (eleven years ago) link

Great to hear--I just heard about them (and had free snacks from them as I heard about them) last week. xpost

pretty even gender split (Eazy), Monday, 5 November 2012 14:59 (eleven years ago) link

Want to say there is some imbroglio surrounding that taxi app? Like, the "tip" you fill out actually goes to the company and not to the driver?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 5 November 2012 15:00 (eleven years ago) link

Are you thinking of Uber?

carl agatha, Monday, 5 November 2012 15:02 (eleven years ago) link

always best to tip in cash anyway, right?

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 5 November 2012 15:03 (eleven years ago) link

http://betabeat.com/2012/09/uber-yellow-cab-taxi-app-20-percent-tip-hailo-verifone/

I think it's Uber - they charge the rider a 20% tip and take their service fee out of that. Hailo charges riders a $1.50 service processing fee and doesn't ding the drivers.

I forgot to mention - there's a $1.50 processing fee for each ride. Obviously I think that's worth the convenience because I forgot to mention it.

carl agatha, Monday, 5 November 2012 15:05 (eleven years ago) link

Thanks for the heads up carl, I just downloaded the hailo app. Though I really never take cabs, but maybe now I'll start.

So when we woke up Saturday morning, someone had taken the shitty wooden bench from our porch. We didn't care about the bench, but it was kind of scary to think that sometime in the middle the night some people were out there rifling. And then when I went out to get some bagels, I saw that the bench was sitting in front of Oakwood 82 (which is the world's shittiest 4am bar and is right next to our building). So I guess we can assume drunken hooligans are the culprits, but then maybe we can also assume the drunken hooligans are our neighbors because how else would they know about the bench? Anyway, the bench was gone by Sunday morning.

I hate that feeling! I live on Drunks Street and on marathon day, someone had speared a pumpkin on our fence (which to be fair, has spear-like points, so I understand the urge) and even though I knew it was just drunks being drunks, I got this wave of anxiety because somebody had interacted with my home without invitation.

I know hardly anything about ASL, but the way facial expressions modify hand signs is really fascinating.

carl agatha, Monday, 5 November 2012 16:53 (eleven years ago) link

I took a quarter of ASL at the U of C to fulfill a language requirement, and it was one of the most life-changing experiences I've ever had. It's a fascinating language, and almost impossible to "translate" because so much of the punctuation os conveyed by facial expressions. I'd highly recommend anyone required to speak to public take the class, because eye-contact and (obv.) body language is such a vital component.

Also, you learn some fascinating visual puns. Like, ASL for "pasteurized" is literally bringing your fingers past your eyes. Also, you learn that ASL speakers devise their own signs for their names, because obviously you're not going to waste time spelling letter by letter all the time.

Per my question about sending things to NY: http://flyoverfeminism.com/how-to-help-in-wake-of-sandy/

The Occupy Sandy Wedding Registry is basically a list of what they need that you can buy and have shipped right to them. Per our own in orbit, Occupy is providing a lot of the immediate, on the ground assistance to the really bad areas that the Red Cross and FEMA aren't able to service for whatever reason.

I find the controversy over Uber confusing b/c that article carl linked to didn't seem to answer questions about its effect on the drivers. But as long as Hailo is doing right, I won't worry too much about the contention.

xp - I'm going to talk to the partner here who ran for judge his opinion of the candidates and I'll let you know if he has any big news of relevance.

I tried to early vote last Monday before class but I missed the closing time by like ten minutes. >:p

Is anybody else's polling place in a private business? That always weirds me out. It's Powell's so it's not like voting in Starbucks, but still. Seems like all voting should be in public/government buildings.

carl agatha, Monday, 5 November 2012 20:37 (eleven years ago) link

Oh, and I tweetered about it, but if any of you all want to give a plug for the 866-OUR-VOTE Election Protection hotline on your social media platform of choice, I'd be much obliged - http://www.866ourvote.org/.
