as soon as DJP reminded me he's a software development professional I lost 100% of any reason to ever want to talk about software distribution

I just can't talk about stuff like that to someone else who's in the same gig makes me feel ill. We can talk about anything else, though

hahaha hi-five

Gandalf’s Gobble Melt (DJP), Friday, 2 November 2012 19:10 (eleven years ago) link

seriously!

I met up with a friend/coworker and some of his friends for a brewery tap room visit and dinner the other night. Dudes were talking about which new phone they liked, I realized they were software dev bros, and I think I talked to someone's wife about how whole-house humidifiers don't work well and how cheese is good or something

d-_-b (mh), Friday, 2 November 2012 19:13 (eleven years ago) link

what do you guys think of a phone like this?

when i was on my internal med rotation, it came out that all of the male students had, at one point, lost (and subsequently retrieved) their phones in the same place: the one decent bathroom for pooping on the floor. and all of us had left it in the exact same place, on top of the toilet paper dispenser.

trip to the apple store happening tonight -- not gonna buy anything but checking out the ipad mini is a must

markers, Friday, 2 November 2012 21:53 (eleven years ago) link

My coworker who buys a lot of apple gear came by with a mini today. They're small, pocketable for him since he's a bigger dude, and totally usable at that resolution/size

d-_-b (mh), Saturday, 3 November 2012 01:17 (eleven years ago) link

whenever possible I still purchase physical media when buying music, because it is much more likely that my hard drive will die (in fact, it's a certainty; the question is "when" and it's a fact of life of all mechanical devices) than it is that my house will burn down.

apologies if already addressed (i will probably never catch up on this thread) but ~backups~

炒面kampf (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 3 November 2012 03:10 (eleven years ago) link

^^^ yeah and optical discs aren't particularly archival

Infamous dickbiscuits (silby), Saturday, 3 November 2012 03:20 (eleven years ago) link

I have a Stora NAS for backups, which has hard drives in it and will one day die. I could back up to DVDs so I could have a giant stack of them sitting around instead of a giant stack of CDs, which I already have anyway. It is not currently in my monthly budget to play for 100+ GB of remote backup storage that is growing constantly.

Gandalf’s Gobble Melt (DJP), Saturday, 3 November 2012 03:23 (eleven years ago) link

iirc DVD-R shelf life is not particularly predictable, somewhere like 5-10 years?

乒乓, Saturday, 3 November 2012 03:42 (eleven years ago) link

you could probably get some kind of RAID thingy that doesn't care if a few hard drives die

Just be one of those ilxors who constantly complains about iPod classics not being updated and how you have to have your whole music collection on you at all times. Instant duplicate of your collection!

d-_-b (mh), Saturday, 3 November 2012 03:45 (eleven years ago) link

get a blu ray burner and do it on like 3 discs

services like carbonite or jungledisk are fairly affordable, if you're that paranoid

Nhex, Saturday, 3 November 2012 04:00 (eleven years ago) link

went back to the apple store today; now sure I want a rmbp, pretty conflicted on 13" vs 15". gah.

toby, Saturday, 3 November 2012 17:56 (eleven years ago) link

13, more portable

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 3 November 2012 18:03 (eleven years ago) link

15, bigger screen

Alba, Saturday, 3 November 2012 18:14 (eleven years ago) link

also 15, more powerful. although I'm not sure I ever really do anything that needs it... that said, I'm leaning a little towards the 15, and then carrying on using the 11" mba as my main travel machine, even on somewhat extended trips.

this is a ridiculous thing to even see as a "problem", though (it's a work machine, so I don't have to worry about the cost, so really this should be an enjoyable decision).

toby, Saturday, 3 November 2012 18:32 (eleven years ago) link

if you have an 11" air i'd def recommend you go for a 15" mbp.

jed_, Saturday, 3 November 2012 18:33 (eleven years ago) link

thanks. I think everything is pointing in that direction... which is funny, as I've been waiting for a 13", and would have bought one if stet hadn't sent me off to negative reviews.

A couple of years ago, my gf's iPhone was stolen out of a club. Find My Phone was still an early version, but we were able to track the phone down to a 24 hour diner and I busted the guy right at the table and in front of his friends and recovered the phone just a couple of hours after it was swiped. Thief had no idea about "Find My Phone."

FORTUNE -- He's been called "bonehead," "Dumbfellas" and the "less-than-master-mind" behind the theft of 3,600 iPad minis Monday night from the JFK cargo building that was the site of the 1978 Lufthansa heist featured in "Goodfellas."
Court papers filed Friday in Brooklyn show that one Renel Rene Richardson has been arrested by the FBI and charged with acting as the lookout for a pair of accomplices as they allegedly forklifted two pallets containing 1,800 iPad minis each into a waiting tractor-trailer.
The FBI was reportedly led to Richardson after co-workers told Port Authority detectives that he had made suspicious inquiries about when the iPads were due to arrive and where a forklift might be found.

Hero...of nothing.

Anyway, getting my new MacMini today (well, ordering it, rather). Maybe an iPhone 5 as well, the dust having settled somewhat.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 19 November 2012 15:27 (eleven years ago) link

Ned, are you getting a Fusion Drive?

WilliamC, Monday, 19 November 2012 15:31 (eleven years ago) link

Caught myself looking at ebay for junk to further upgrade my old-ass Mac Pro I got used. Dumbest hobby ever, but I have the suspicion if I put the fastest possible processors in it, it'd be comparable with a late-model iMac.

under minnesota shakedown (mh), Monday, 19 November 2012 15:35 (eleven years ago) link

xpost -- I was strongly thinking about it but the cost won't come through in this case (both purchases are gifts from another, and I'm mindful of their own budget). Seems like it would be a great idea for sure -- maybe next time.

Woot! had a new 11.6" Dual-Core i5 MacBook Air for $760 and I just keep staring at the sold-out page hoping it will stop being true.

My 15" rMBP arrived! It's great, although I haven't got very far with configuring it yet, and I've already discovered that Firefox isn't retina updated (at least out of the box).

toby, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 06:07 (eleven years ago) link

Thanks for the advice about this machine - 15" was definitely the way (for me) to go. Nightly build of firefox is retina enabled, everything else works fine, I've got the machine set up just the way I like it and I'm very impressed. Not sure if the SSD is better than the ones in my iMac and 2010 mbp, or just that the machine is only a few days old, but it's running much more smoothly and quickly than either of them.

Next step is to reformat the 2010 mbp and see if it behaves itself better - it has a tendency to get very hot and slow while doing very little, which doesn't seem right.

toby, Friday, 23 November 2012 15:06 (eleven years ago) link

I wiped and reinstalled my 2011 mbp recently and it feels a lot less crusty to me. Though it probably had more to do with going from 4gb of ram to 16 which might have been the best $75 I've spent in a while.

joygoat, Friday, 23 November 2012 19:31 (eleven years ago) link

yes, I guess my old machine is 4gb and this is 16gb. Otoh my 11" mba is also 4gb, I think, and is faster than the mbp, so it's probably not just that.

toby, Friday, 23 November 2012 20:02 (eleven years ago) link

Ok im a complete noob when it comes to hardware but how does one upgrade the ram of a Mbp? I've got a 2009 model that's really struggling these days

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 23 November 2012 20:21 (eleven years ago) link

Upgrading the RAM is pretty straight-forward on those MBPs. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1270?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
