super duper dancey in SF. packed house. tons of fun

yeah, i was a little apprehensive given max's warning but he played a super upbeat set, totally rawked the house.

about his setup though, i don't wanna get all technical but his laptop was most likely the sequencer (using Ableton or something) and he was using two control surfaces to manipulate the music live (including adding new parts i noticed were different and distinct from WYGIGT). really, i don't know what you expect a live set to be in dance music from a single guy. Lots of live manipulation and one of the more memorable nights of dance i've had in the last year.

amaaaaaaazing.

also he wore an awesome hat, with a blue flower.

tropical beards of paradise (san frandisco), Monday, 2 February 2009 18:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Lindstrøm hasn't DJed in four years or so (his words) so not sure why people were expecting that.

this was the third time i saw him, probably the best. i liked how the epic-ness of WYGIGT provided this massive framework for everything else to hang from, giving the night a structure it wouldn't have otherwise. and he dropped what i presumed were bits of his forthcoming album with Solale (though it coulda been Christabelle, couldn't tell you) that were stellar.

if there was a downside, it was that he was moving through ideas sooo fast (the polar opposite of the previous times i saw him, where he moved at an almost glacial speed), seriously switching it up every 2 minutes or so, that it was hard to maintain a dance rhythm.

beta blog, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 16:14 (fifteen years ago) link

i didn't notice, i was too busy dancing and fending off the MASSIVE douchebag quotient - wtf was up with all the DUDES & DRUNK SUBURBAN CHICKS at this party (i'm guessing the 11th street curse), not to mention the frigging legion of photographers on the fucking dancefloor, getting in the way - at one point i counted FIVE of them with their gigantic rigs basically blocking the view of the decks & projections. also, unless you post warning at the door that i'm going to be photographed just by entering the club, i generally DO NOT CONSENT. lots of those dudes will find pics of me flipping them off when they review their shots...

that said the music was stellar and i had tons of fun despite all this BS. beta is otm about the epic-ness and how the album was the framework. new tunes were wicked (btw solale = christabelle afaik), that super funky one in the middle was pukka ;)it's around the 3 min. mark in part 2 below - btw someone recorded the most of the show using a digicam and posted 11 vids to youtube with decent audio quality: check it!

part 1

part 2

part 3 (includes laptop crash)

part 4 (wicked)

part 5 (also wicked)

part 6

part 7

part 8 (w/ new lindstrom & solale CHOON!)

part 9

part 10

part 11 is just the crowd cheering at the end. :)
enjoy, big ups to youtube user derekbobus for upping these...

also, i had a quick chat with the man afterwards (while we were being kicked out of the office - the only quiet place in the club - by the incredibly rude venue staff) and he said that the reason the tour is so short is partially because his GF won't let him go away for too long as she's home with their two little ones :)

mikebee (BATTAGS), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 19:55 (fifteen years ago) link

bump so ya'll mf'az see this shit. :)

mikebee (BATTAGS), Wednesday, 4 February 2009 20:03 (fifteen years ago) link

GAWD!!! i finally watched these... i'm still reminiscing about that night. it was sooooooooo great!

bummer about the tour being short though, i totally get it, but still, i wish we got more visits from the cosmic king.

tropical beards of paradise (san frandisco), Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:34 (fifteen years ago) link

Judging by these Youtube clips, that was a much better Lindstrom gig than any I've seen. I've never seen him do any of the album!

has anyone else heard the Meanderthals record yet? i am listening through for the second time, and find myself wanting to buy lots of weed and just cruise up the PCH.

the table is the table, Monday, 9 March 2009 01:21 (fifteen years ago) link

just listening to the song found here: http://www.smuglesning.no/view.aspx?postID=3211
Sounds awesome.

mizzell, Monday, 9 March 2009 01:43 (fifteen years ago) link

song is Kunst or Ars. They describe it perfectly

Oj.

mizzell, Monday, 9 March 2009 01:57 (fifteen years ago) link

okay, i am pretty certain that this is going to be one of my albums of the spring/summer. 'Lesaron Highway' is the one that is killing me.

the table is the table, Monday, 9 March 2009 02:00 (fifteen years ago) link

new blackbelt andersen cd on full pupp is just amazing, even better than what i was hoping for. a lot of previously released stuff sure, but the album works realllly well imo. not too indulgent with a lot of beautiful, warm synth soundz. not too different from the hatchback album actually, but i like it a lot more and don't know exactly why.

can't wait to check out meanderthals though, has it been released officially or just the leak at this point?

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Monday, 9 March 2009 03:45 (fifteen years ago) link

guh, that meanderthals track sounds like boring tortoise. nu-balearic is getting so snoozeworthy to me (maybe that's the point?)

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Monday, 9 March 2009 04:27 (fifteen years ago) link

^^^ugh yeah. decided to check out those tracks and it sounds like all the worst tracks from every nu-balearic comp released in the last two years. diet indie electro?

still curious about the album tracks, but prospects are not good at this point

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Monday, 9 March 2009 05:11 (fifteen years ago) link

we need more cosmic nu-tangerine dream electro balearic in the vein of oblio

have you heard Steve Moore of Zombi & Lovelock?

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Monday, 9 March 2009 05:35 (fifteen years ago) link

the rest of the Meanderthals record is perhaps a bit more lively than the track that's floating around...definitely hazy, but some more interesting beat work and rich rich textures. that said, i haven't been paying much attention to the whole balearic thing for a while now, and i also have a boner for most of rune lindbaek and the idjut boys' work, so my bias is clear.

i have a promo copy. official release may 11.

(this isn't the thread for it, but i also got the Moderat record in the same package, and i...am...not...pleased with that one at all)

the table is the table, Monday, 9 March 2009 06:39 (fifteen years ago) link

the Meanderthals album reminds me a lot the Smith & Mudd stuff.

<quote> we need more cosmic nu-tangerine dream electro balearic in the vein of oblio </quote>

its a sound I'm liking to call Neu-Kosmiche.

you'll hear it a lot round my house, but strangely nowhere else.

Hamildan, Monday, 9 March 2009 17:34 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, kaiser, it does. i also love Mudd, too. there are moments that remind me of Lexx, too, which makes perfect sense.

the table is the table, Monday, 9 March 2009 18:17 (fifteen years ago) link

k, since nobody else is commenting on the blackbelt andersen i took a mildly drastic measure and did this.

it really is very good, someone way way way upthread called "sirup" an 'acid balearic' track, and i think the rest of the album mines similar territory. like if you were to slow down some of the cuts on 'warp 10+1 influences' and add dub atmospherics. tell me what u guyz think...

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 06:53 (fifteen years ago) link

i've been listening to it (thanks) and... i haven't noticed it too much. sounds nice, but i think the hatchback stuff is, while similar, more dynamic and direct. but maybe you shouldn't listen to me since i like that meanderthals track everyone thinks is boring.

mizzell, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 16:16 (fifteen years ago) link

not "everyone" thinks that meanderthals track is boring, just jaxon, and hes like 60 and works for a tech company, so what does he know

the new claremont 56 compilation Originals vol. 2, compiled by Stockholm's Mark Seven and features Stars 'N' Bars s/t track which was just on harvey's BIS. ridiculously awesome moog rock balearic vibe, impossible to find the record, even on the internet and i'm sure prices will go up

two weeks pass...

am listening to this permanent vacation label comp and it's just SO GOOD - am guessing it's mostly old stuff but am particularly jamming:

- that playful, oscillating melody in bostro pesopeo's 'communquis'
- qzen's sultry vocal on 40 thieves' 'don't turn it off'
- that awesome bassline on permanent vacation's 'tic toc'
- the epic largeness of the superpitcher rmx of 'iridium'

lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 10:07 (fifteen years ago) link

that bostro pesopeo 12" is pretty amazing, i gotta say. it really flew under the radar for something a) on a trendy label and b) with a trendy remixer (hercules + love affair, in this case).

prince of PLURsia (haitch), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 11:43 (fifteen years ago) link

last night san frandisco djed with Tom Cruise of Worst Friends and he gave me their new 12". it has a remix by bostro pesopeo on it. i haven't listened to it yet but am looking forward to it when i get home tonight.

that bostro pesopeo 12" really is pretty great, i remember talking about how much i dug the b-side "communquis" sometime last year when it came out. i also picked up lexx's "axis shift" used the other day, almost forgot how good that tune is

also- i haven't been able to find it on discogs, but is haitch talking about a permanent vacation volume 3 comp? if so, when is it coming out?

can't wait to hear "tic toc", or any new single featuring kathy diamond for that matter (although that codebreaker song was sort of a letdown)
