That Terrence McKenna quote is way too ranty, narrow and exclusionary. But I regularly go out into wild, remote places where it is impossible to consume any media other than maybe a book that I stuck in my pack, and I would strongly recommend getting unplugged from the grid for at least a solid week every year, with some one day refreshers thrown in as often as you can. It does change how you look at the world and I think it is ultimately very helpful for one's mental health, once you get over the unaccustomed silence of it.

I agree with that sentiment, but something about reading this thread makes me want to stick quotation marks around, and a textured grayish background under, that paragraph.
