Fuck this weather. This is not the December I moved north for. I want SNOW and I want LOTS OF IT.

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:58 (eleven years ago) link

It's making my hair wavy. I'll dwi.gif since it means I get to have at least one more day of awesome running weather this year.

Jeff, Monday, 3 December 2012 17:01 (eleven years ago) link

Run in the snow, IMO. Get treads on your shoes. Put your boobs into it.

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Monday, 3 December 2012 17:15 (eleven years ago) link

I do, in all conditions. Some are just more pleasurable than others.

We'll now have The Gap Preacher on State Street:

hey guys i started a thread on ilm for show attendance
just sayin
Chicago live music but not like blues bars with old people or ~jazz club~ unless it's the Green Mill

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 15:29 (eleven years ago) link

Jon Williams will be pissed.

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 18:15 (eleven years ago) link

lol, I wonder if the change to Gap will be accompanied by an upgrade in preaching style.

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 18:16 (eleven years ago) link

I approve of the change. Gap is somewhat less shit than Old Navy. Quite a bit, actually.

I feel sure they won't close the MI Ave. location, after all they have kept their 2 Banana Republics (flagship and Water Tower Place) open within a block of each other for a long time, even though that seems like excess.

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 18:19 (eleven years ago) link

As long as there's an Old Navy somewhere for me to buy cheap jeans when these wear out. Everything else there fits like it was made for people with extra nodules and contours and appendages than I was unaware humans possessed.

I will miss the preacher if he goes away, though. I greatly enjoyed standing next to him with a grave expression and loudly going "BA! BA BA BA BA BABA BA! BA! BA!" to passersby. You probably had to be there, but trust me, we had a really great time together. Or maybe he just didn't register his disapproval distinctly enough for me to notice. Either way.

This is not entirely surprising, I always thought this joint was a bit skeezy.

UPDATE: (9:40 a.m.) According to DNAinfo.com, this was the third time in a week that gunfire broke out at one of DJ Jay Thompson's, 24, aka DJ JT Da Don, shows. The other incidents were "at a house party and barber shop parties on the West Side." He told DNAinfo.com, "After last night, I need to change my career path"

today on my walk to work i saw a guy standing under a tree holding his head while a giant blue recliner/armchair was sitting in the middle of the sidewalk. it looked like he was turning the corner into his living room, and i was like "nice place to sit, eh?" and he said yeah i'm just taking a rest. apparently he was carrying this giant blue chair that he found in an alley back to his apt and was just taking a break because it was really heavy and hard to carry. i feel bad for not offering to help but i was already carrying work bag and purse and headed in the opposite direction. should i have helped him?

I just walked past Rev. Old Navy and though it would be nice to stand next to him and hand out cigarettes. "Heaven doesn't exist. Smoke up!"

carl agatha, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 20:55 (eleven years ago) link

I guess this should go in the show thread but I feel like it is not quite the same audience... I really want to go see the Holiday Brass and Chorale Concert next Friday but I'm already going to the opera on Wednesday (Hansel and Gretel! It's getting really good reviews. But then again, nobody ever really pans the Lyric...) and that's a lot of late night performing arts in one week. But dang, I bet that's going to be really good.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 20:57 (eleven years ago) link

Having read the play and knowing the actors and director, the new show at Steppenwolf, The Motherfucker with the Hat, should be great.

blues bras (Eazy), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 20:59 (eleven years ago) link

wow, that Holiday Brass and Chorale Concert looks very cool. xp

does anyone else have new year's eve off? i do but sarah doesn't. anyone want to have a film festival or hang out?

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 21:23 (eleven years ago) link

I prob do.

Rev. Gap.

He should get Gap to sponsor him. "You're not gonna get into heaven wearin' that ratty coat from 5 years ago, so head into the Gap for 40% off select outerwear for heterosexuals."

Urban Outfitters on Rush could get an ironic reverend out front.

i (having had 5 hours of sleep and probably showing it) passed him just a minute ago and he said "god don't want no weed smokers in heaven!!!"

Oh yeah, I think we'll be seeing that. We have four tickets to use by mid-June (as part of the RED subscription for under-30s), so that'll be one of the two shows. Not sure about the other. Honestly, Belleville interests me more than either The Birthday Party or Head of Passes, but it opens after our subscription expires.

I just saw:
- a man who was no less than 7' tall
- a beautiful cat in a McDonalds

And

- a deadhead sticker on a Cadillac

there's a country music lyric waiting to happen there

sweetántangó (clouds), Thursday, 6 December 2012 02:11 (eleven years ago) link

A cat who was no less than 7' tall, now that would be something.

blues bras (Eazy), Thursday, 6 December 2012 02:17 (eleven years ago) link

7' man was incredible. I was walking behind him, waiting for 6' tall people to walk by b/c he made them look teeny.

Holy damn, this thread was started on January 2, 2012!

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Thursday, 6 December 2012 04:17 (eleven years ago) link

At this point we might as well finish out the year on it. I was just thinking the other day, though, that we hadn't had a new one in awhile.

my work building is testing the fire alarm notification system on our floor by playing a string quartet version of "stairway to heaven" over the alarm speakers

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 6 December 2012 15:37 (eleven years ago) link

That's kind of awesome.

carl agatha, Thursday, 6 December 2012 16:35 (eleven years ago) link

crazy day. a water pipe burst in the library over the weekend, shooting water across half the library. somehow none of our books or computers were damaged but the floor is saturated. spent most of the day so far clearing the books off our bookcases so that they can dry the carpet underneath.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 10 December 2012 18:39 (eleven years ago) link

Yikes. Reminds me of my dad telling me about an incident that happened at the library of the school where he and my mom work (I think you shared a link once upon a time about a job opening there, n). Some kind of small electrical fire triggered the sprinkler system in the archives section and drenched the shit out of a good chunk of their collection. Sad to hear about, but the way they're trying to save stuff sounds pretty cool... LITERALLY. They're doing some kind of freeze-drying treatment to a lot of the documents.

dansplaining (dan m), Monday, 10 December 2012 19:41 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i took a preservation class in grad school and it was pretty much my favorite class, all about fixing books and dealing with disaster scenarios. in this case it's more a matter of waiting for the building to dry and clean everything but until then i don't have a dedicated place to work. on the plus side, we were going to move the bookcases anyways so this is just pushing that project up a little bit.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 10 December 2012 19:47 (eleven years ago) link

that totally sucks about the mural
i like it too

two questions for librarians:

1) do any of you know where i should look for help locating copies of old educational filmstrips (that are not already online obvs or i might have been able to find them)?

2) n/a -- when you were doing stuff with that chicago underground library thing, did you have contact with the guy who is responsible for public collectors?

passion it person (La Lechera), Monday, 10 December 2012 19:51 (eleven years ago) link

i don't know who that would be, but i'm pretty out of touch with them, i only know 2-3 of the people there

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 10 December 2012 20:03 (eleven years ago) link

just wondering
totes identify with this person, that's why

what about #1

passion it person (La Lechera), Monday, 10 December 2012 20:05 (eleven years ago) link

i don't know, sorry - the stuff i do is so specialized/niche that i'm not much help in anything outside of my little corner. EW probably has a better idea than me.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 10 December 2012 20:07 (eleven years ago) link

ok! i'll pester him. thank u
