For the last couple of years, whenever I hear anyone refer to the holiday season, I can't stop myself from saying "HOLIDAY SEASON" in my head in the voice of the DJ drop

So did anyone ever try to compile all the no dj mixtape tracks from the 07-09 run?

longneck, Monday, 21 January 2013 21:27 (eleven years ago) link

This is funny and amazing, until you realize they let an accused murderer speak to these schoolchildren. Photo is all-time though

2008-2010 was some of the most exciting rap music ever made imo

rap steve gadd (D-40), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:28 (eleven years ago) link

100% agree

bass, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:30 (eleven years ago) link

2007 pretty great/underrated too

bass, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:32 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, jeez. like you're listening to 'beat it up' which by every indication should be a boring boilerplate radio joint and if you're not really paying attention, it kind of is, but then the beat switches up so you're listening to the lyrics a bit closer and it's

four thirty still blowin purpy
08 'verti rollin dirty
wardrobe clean as dish detergent
got your girlfriend picking purses
say she lonely
gucci, only one wish to meet me in person
when she met me hold my neck
and told me that she loved my verses

which isn't nearly as flashy as the verses that follow, or even that remarkable at all compared to other sections of the track, but it's just such a nice, unique little construction on a song that really doesn't demand it. it doesn't jump out at you right away like 'freaking partners...' or whatever else, but it's there for whenever you decide to notice it. and i feel like that was and is one of the best things about that period, that aside from the handful of brilliant, stop-you-in-your-tracks lines there were on every tape, there were just so many little things going on that were so unusual--from the words he was using to the way he was talking about things to the patterns and flows he was coming up with, and most of the time it was all of those things going on at once.

it really was a crazy zone he was in

Jacques_Lamure, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:55 (eleven years ago) link

I've been obsessed with this track lately. Much simpler lyricism than his '08-'10 run, but every line is so effective

am i the only one who didn't know gucci was dropping trap god 2 tmrw?

'Opposite', great track. I find that I appreciate certain tracks over time, and constant discover new tracks after I return to particular tapes. Barely noticed this track, for instance, last year...

Another one like that for me:

"Bullet Wound" is really a revelation. First Wayne performance in a while that's made me think, oh yeah, I used to love this guy

Evan R, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 16:08 (eleven years ago) link

u can buy the trap god 2 no dj on itunes. not sure how i feel about this trend (just kdding i hate it)

don't call it a cloud rap i've been high for years (zvookster), Wednesday, 13 February 2013 16:20 (eleven years ago) link

I think it's cool. The DJ is necessary because it lends energy and momentum to a really long listen, but sometimes I want a clean version of a track or two if I want to share it with others or make a mix or something. It's a nice option, and if it gives Gucci some well-deserved revenue for a top-notch release, so much the better

Evan R, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 16:26 (eleven years ago) link

tbh just ended up torrenting the no-DJ versions of the 2012 mixtapes anyway, but I would be willing to pay if more artists did this

two weeks pass...

Gucci + V-Nasty > Gucci + Young Scooter

:/

about that....

J0rdan S., Saturday, 2 March 2013 00:57 (eleven years ago) link

been listening to old gucci mane & lil wayne mixtapes & ive gotta say gucci mane >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

just sayin, Saturday, 2 March 2013 02:30 (eleven years ago) link

xp I actually really liked that last Scooter tape, too, but the songs that pulled me out of it were the Gucci guest spots, where it was like, "oh yeah, here's how Scooter is supposed to be rapping"

Gucci + farm-system Gucci in-training is not a good look

Evan R, Saturday, 2 March 2013 02:32 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i got a lot of disagreement on the point when i brought it up before, but Scooter sounds distractingly too much like a Gucci disciple to me to really enjoy his stuff much

haha apparently gucci is performing at a skating rink in baltimore tomorrow night

i still dont hear the resemblance being that strong re: gucci v scooter

scooter isn't on gucci's level in any way, but i dont think anyone ever claimed he was.

Scuwop

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 5 March 2013 06:46 (eleven years ago) link

not 'resemblance' so much as, like, Scooter sounds like he's trying to write Gucci verses/hooks. it doesn't sound like he's listened to ANY other rappers, like that's his only influence.

Shuwopley (some dude), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 10:18 (eleven years ago) link

Right now I'm getting the impression that Gucci is following Scooter rather than the other way around.

Really like the low-key production on this one, and the 2 Chainz verse is excellent. Proof the guy can slay a verse without having to lean hard on his 2 Chainz persona

Evan R, Thursday, 7 March 2013 20:14 (eleven years ago) link

if only anybody wanted to discuss gucci & 2 chainz this thred'd be perfect

haha v tedious discussion on these 2 over the last few days

don't call it a cloud rap i've been high for years (zvookster), Friday, 8 March 2013 01:44 (eleven years ago) link

the verses on that track really are great though, it's refreshing to hear the more precise flow from gucci in particular. also i don't mind discussing it here since there's a lot of nastiness/white noise in the other thread atm

chilli, Friday, 8 March 2013 05:20 (eleven years ago) link

OK, an actual Gucci single from an actual commercial album:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpLZrG-TlFU

Huge departure, and I think it's incredible.

Evan R, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 20:15 (eleven years ago) link

don't know if i love it but on a purely melodic level it's pretty great

some dude, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 22:09 (eleven years ago) link

this would instantly seem worse if it was "the debut single from Guwop," though, so happy that bullet was dodged

some dude, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 22:10 (eleven years ago) link

me too that was an awful idea

bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 22:12 (eleven years ago) link

changing it for a half hour and then caving was a great idea, though, so hilarious

i wish young dro did the same thing ugh "3krazy"??!

God, hadn't even thought about that, but the fervor over this would have been intense

Has any established rapper other than Tity 2 Necklace ever benefited from a name change?

I suppose there's the 500 hats of Bartholomew Combs, but they didn't really seem to alter his career for the worse or better.
