crazy day. a water pipe burst in the library over the weekend, shooting water across half the library. somehow none of our books or computers were damaged but the floor is saturated. spent most of the day so far clearing the books off our bookcases so that they can dry the carpet underneath.

Yikes. Reminds me of my dad telling me about an incident that happened at the library of the school where he and my mom work (I think you shared a link once upon a time about a job opening there, n). Some kind of small electrical fire triggered the sprinkler system in the archives section and drenched the shit out of a good chunk of their collection. Sad to hear about, but the way they're trying to save stuff sounds pretty cool... LITERALLY. They're doing some kind of freeze-drying treatment to a lot of the documents.

yeah i took a preservation class in grad school and it was pretty much my favorite class, all about fixing books and dealing with disaster scenarios. in this case it's more a matter of waiting for the building to dry and clean everything but until then i don't have a dedicated place to work. on the plus side, we were going to move the bookcases anyways so this is just pushing that project up a little bit.

that totally sucks about the murali like it too
two questions for librarians:
1) do any of you know where i should look for help locating copies of old educational filmstrips (that are not already online obvs or i might have been able to find them)?
2) n/a -- when you were doing stuff with that chicago underground library thing, did you have contact with the guy who is responsible for public collectors?
― passion it person (La Lechera), Monday, 10 December 2012 19:51 (eleven years ago) link
i don't know who that would be, but i'm pretty out of touch with them, i only know 2-3 of the people there
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 10 December 2012 20:03 (eleven years ago) link

i don't know, sorry - the stuff i do is so specialized/niche that i'm not much help in anything outside of my little corner. EW probably has a better idea than me.

― dansplaining (dan m), Monday, 10 December 2012 20:21 (eleven years ago) link
the ones i'm looking for are from the 60s and 70s and are almost certainly waaaaay out of circulation
― passion it person (La Lechera), Monday, 10 December 2012 20:24 (eleven years ago) link
LL, do you have the names of particular filmstrips in mind? If so, there might be some libraries somewhere in the state that has them still, which you could find out via worldcat? If they would ILL them, I don't know.

there are library of congress listings but that's all i can findi don't know how to librarian
should i just post this on the librarian thread?
― passion it person (La Lechera), Monday, 10 December 2012 20:41 (eleven years ago) link
this is what AJ was talking about: http://www.worldcat.org/ you just put in the name of the movie and it tells you what are the libraries closest to you that have it in their catalogs. however, i don't know if it includes filmstrips. i tried "secret life of 118 green street" as a test and it showed libraries that carry it on vhs.
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 10 December 2012 20:50 (eleven years ago) link
yeah that one is a little easier to find -- it's on youtube toothe black widow one is particularly good and i found it on archive.org
if you feel like watching it http://archive.org/details/0769_Black_Widow_Spider_Her_Life_Cycle_and_Her_Enemies_18_04_42_00
― passion it person (La Lechera), Monday, 10 December 2012 20:51 (eleven years ago) link
Yes, sorry. It does include filmstrips, such as this: http://www.worldcat.org/title/life-cycle-of-the-monarch/oclc/18785367&referer
As you can see with that one, there's only one library in IL that has it, and it's far away. But you very well might be able to ILL it through CPL.
xp

ah! ok. thanks. that's good info. love the name of that library!
― passion it person (La Lechera), Monday, 10 December 2012 20:53 (eleven years ago) link
does that mean that there are only two copies in circulation in the entire country?!
It means that there are only two copies catalogued in the entire country, though with something like that, there very well could be a lot of uncatalogued copies...And I will say that audio-visual material is sometimes hard to get via ILL. Like, some libraries are reluctant to lend it out. Or it just could be in a non-circulating archive...

Sorry, I feel like my reference skillz have severely atrophied in the year since I became director.

Not sure if you're looking for filmstrips AND/OR 16 mm films - but Amazon sells a box set of the old ones - http://www.amazon.com/Educational-Archives-School-Locker-DVD/dp/B000654ZFA/ref=pd_cp_mov_3
There's probably a way to rent it from somewhere too ...
I kinda wished I had organized some sort of Chilxors 'library people' 'meet and greet' this week, 'cause my kid sis is in town and she does some cool special collections work at Oregon St. U. She probably would like to commiserate on the state of digital preservation from school to school (or libraries in general).

the ones i want haven't been collected yet as far as i can tell -- they're time lapse nature cinematographyi wish someone else had bothered to collect them for me!
― passion it person (La Lechera), Monday, 10 December 2012 21:07 (eleven years ago) link

― doctor, doctor, give me the news (askance johnson), Monday, 10 December 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link

I use Connexion, which is related to WorldCat but I'm not sure how, other than that OCLC is the organization behind both databases. (All I know is that a couple of years ago we were instructed to use Connexion instead.)

(Not a librarian, but I am a researcher.)
― Sax Blatterday (jaymc), Monday, 10 December 2012 21:42 (eleven years ago) link
I thought Connexion was only for catalogers? At least the only time I've ever used it was in my cataloging class.
― doctor, doctor, give me the news (askance johnson), Monday, 10 December 2012 21:44 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah, I think Connexion relies on the WorldCat database but includes additional cataloging information. I'm guessing that it's preferred here because the primary reason we use OCLC is to verify bibliographic information.

― carl agatha, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 16:21 (eleven years ago) link
Okay, there's actually quite a few messages to the potus. And the first couple of hundred pages are warnings to various countries about how they are sinful etc and how they must repent or jesus aka son @hm@n will smite them etc. Some of these sins are vague, but a lot of them are abortion, homosexuality, etc.
He accuses the people of Denmark of partaking of the "sins of Sodom, and of immorality and sorcery".
He also states that the "immoral practice of men and women bathing together" must cease in japan.
And yet some of his proclamations are pretty cool, like he orders Turkey to stop persecuting the Kurds.
also, I must note that the book is actually 900 pages, not 300 as I erroneously stated yesterday.
