you're welcome!

In my experience, if you quit itunes you have to do it again. It wants desperately for you to use its slowass spotlight wannabee searching.

Here's a probably stupid question from a tech-challenged ilxor named me.

Can the iPad communicate with a thumb drive/small ext hard drive without a proper computer being involved in the transaction?

Tomb Of Spatula (Jon Lewis), Monday, 10 December 2012 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

(i don't own one, just contemplating it)

Tomb Of Spatula (Jon Lewis), Monday, 10 December 2012 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

If you're wondering "hey how come my podcasts stopped updating?", the answer is that new iTunes turns off updates for podcasts you haven't listened to for awhile, so you have to manually go into each podcast and see if it's turned off. Not sure how to globally turn that feature off.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 10 December 2012 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

the old itunes did the same thing, but it put an exclamation next to the podcast name in the list

炒面kampf (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 10 December 2012 19:39 (eleven years ago) link

Ah, is THAT what that meant. Haha.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 10 December 2012 19:40 (eleven years ago) link

haha yeah

Can the iPad communicate with a thumb drive/small ext hard drive without a proper computer being involved in the transaction?

nope

The Remoteless app for Spotify is really great.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 10 December 2012 19:43 (eleven years ago) link

xpost damn. Why won't someone make something small and smart that can also talk to portable storage on its own?

Tomb Of Spatula (Jon Lewis), Monday, 10 December 2012 19:43 (eleven years ago) link

There is the camera connection kit, which gives USB connectivity, but unsurprisingly only allows you to transfer photos. Actually you can also use it to plug in MIDI devices too. I don't know if there are more uses being made of it...

I dearly miss Google Maps on iPhone. Using it on a browser it for shit.

Before: I could look enter "The Palomaar Htelolwtf" and Google would know that I meant "Hotel Palomar, 530 North State Street, Chicago, Illinois," and I could see a pic of it in Street View.

Now: Maps is baffled by "The Palomar Hotel," and even "The Hotel Palomar." I had to remove the fucking "The" in order for it to give me ANY RESULTS AT ALL. I guess at least I didn't wind up dead in the outback while on my way to a Christmas party.

I have at least one annoying moment with Maps every couple of days.

small-scale fux with (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 05:08 (eleven years ago) link

recently I gave it an address in north rd (a major road, 3 km away) and it took me to a 'worth rd' somewhere in america

new iTunes turns off updates for podcasts you haven't listened to for awhile

For my part I think this is a great feature!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 05:36 (eleven years ago) link

I think it's shithouse

炒面kampf (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 05:48 (eleven years ago) link

there are times when I'm too busy to listen to all my podcasts, and times when I can smash out a load of them in a few days; it is not apple's place to decide when and how I do that

炒面kampf (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 05:49 (eleven years ago) link

yes I understand people host podcasts at their expense, and listeners just leave them in their podcatchers for years and leech serving quota, but at the very least there needs to be an option to turn off this dumb shit

炒面kampf (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 05:51 (eleven years ago) link

xp still re maps: I was used to typing in a single name and if I didn't get the exact result I wanted, I at least got a list that contained what I wanted. The problem isn't just the data in the maps, it's the shitful search function. The other day I was looking for a sporting goods store on the north side of Chicago, so I zoomed the map appropriately and typed in "sporting goods." 0 results. As a test, I tried "Sports Authority" b/c I know the location of 3 Sports Authority stores, and the map zoomed way in on the Sports Authority downtown, but it omitted the other two I know about within a few miles' radius.

And over Thanksgiving when I tried finding a certain Mexican restaurant in a small town in North Carolina, I was transported overseas to a town in northwestern Spain that had the same name as the restaurant I was looking for.

Oh oh, and when I hit the bus icon for a directions on public transit in Chicago? It took me to public transit apps in the App Store. Cool.

I'm done for tonight, but if anyone has any requests, I'll be back to bitch more tomorrow.

I am loving my first Mac, however. I am probably going to become one of the obnoxious Mac stans unless Tim Cook and friends fuck that up, too.

its so your entire hd doesnt fill up with podcasts

I can totally see why that might be helpful. I want to be able to turn it off.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 06:31 (eleven years ago) link

unless i'm not understanding what AA thinks it's not apple's place to do, it's not a new feature though. been there since like itunes 8.

Huge news:

Google Maps is back! The official Google maps apps just launched for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, including support for the 4" screen in the iPhone 5. Looks like you'll need a Google account to use it, which I don't have yet so I can't try it out yet and see how we'll integrated it is with other apps.

and it's very very good

炒面kampf (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:03 (eleven years ago) link

although it looks like it's not indexed properly yet – it wasn't coming up in search results, and some people can't even download it using the direct link

Link?

I'm really liking google's design on their last couple iOS app updates, incl this maps app.

Clay, Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:12 (eleven years ago) link

this must be the most eagerly awaited app in the history of apps

I was holding out for this before updating. I need the maps to work far too much to have the crapple one be my only easy option.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:23 (eleven years ago) link

My cries were heard.

How can you be in 2012 and have no google account whatsoever

mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:42 (eleven years ago) link

you don't need a google account i don't think. it asks you to log in to create maps to share, but you can skip that.

caek, Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:54 (eleven years ago) link

i logged in though. does anyone need a gmail invite?

caek, Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:54 (eleven years ago) link

lol

The rub is that year default map app is still Apple's, but WB nonetheless.

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Thursday, 13 December 2012 06:25 (eleven years ago) link

xp - I use other providers for email and social networking, don't post youtube comments, and use flickr rather than picasa for photo sharing. Don't feel like I've been living in the dark ages w/o a google account

Lee626, Thursday, 13 December 2012 06:28 (eleven years ago) link

lol flickr

caek, Thursday, 13 December 2012 07:55 (eleven years ago) link

Apparently you don't actually need to log in to Google, they just make it look like you do.

Alba, Thursday, 13 December 2012 08:09 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, you can skip that step

炒面kampf (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 13 December 2012 08:12 (eleven years ago) link

they don't do a very good job of making it look like you need to. it's pretty clear.

caek, Thursday, 13 December 2012 08:13 (eleven years ago) link

Completely missed your post, caek, sorry. I hate being that guy.

Alba, Thursday, 13 December 2012 08:19 (eleven years ago) link

caek, Thursday, 13 December 2012 08:19 (eleven years ago) link

This is very good.

So is the new Flickr app, btw. Bye, Instagram
