The guys who concoct these little fantasies sure have a shitty idea of what "good writing" is. You ever notice they're all written in that florid, I-own-a-thesaurus, self-congratulatory manner?

Seriously. The dialogue coming out of the old coot character reads a lot like it should be spoken by a vengeful Ricardo Montalban.

that florid, I-own-a-thesaurus, self-congratulatory manner

yeah, but how one reacts to this style is based largely on class identity. if you handed a plumber $10,000 to buy a "ritzy" wardrobe, what they'd buy would never resemble what someone raised with "old money" would buy with the same budget, but it would impress the hell out of all their friends.

I appreciate that Dr. Benjamin Montgomery employed some frowny faces to adequately communicate his distress over the impending death by crystal meth OD of your elementary school children.

No, seriously, this does happen a lot. Usually when you're in the company of more than one other person, but it does happen frequently.

emil.y, Thursday, 13 December 2012 02:25 (eleven years ago) link

moneyball turned modern sports talk into something i imagine is now insufferable to old-timer sports fans.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 13 December 2012 02:28 (eleven years ago) link

but is that people talking at you about sports or talking to each other while you thirdwheel it xp

Well, yeah, that's why I said the second sentence, b/c it happens more to me as a third wheel. But then, I've not been in a work environment for a while, last time I was it was very much a terrible cliched situation of people only ever talking about sports or babies.

emil.y, Thursday, 13 December 2012 02:31 (eleven years ago) link

i'm introverted and i lack a fundamental understanding of whatever brainwave makes people start talking about sports with people who have never shown an interest in sports

THE NATIONS YOUTH DANCED TO THE MACARANA (innocent) (zachlyon), Thursday, 13 December 2012 02:34 (eleven years ago) link

there are just generally a lot of people who will talk your ear off about their pet interest whether or not you share their passion for it

All I ever hear in my office is fucking football nonsense. 365 days a year. IN CLEVELAND.

I always try to get in little digs, though. Last time the NFL draft came up, I needled the worst offender constantly about his endless draft talk. "Unless you are actually in the draft or own a football team, you're kind of crazy to give a shit about this and even crazier to watch it on TV" etc.

Gollum: "Hot, Ready and Smeagol!" (Phil D.), Thursday, 13 December 2012 02:42 (eleven years ago) link

"unless you're actually in your favorite band you're kind of crazy to give a shit that they're currently in the studio recording a new album"

Did he take that as an invitation to show you his fantasy league?

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 13 December 2012 02:45 (eleven years ago) link

Fantasy LEAGUES. He also does fantasy basketball.

Gollum: "Hot, Ready and Smeagol!" (Phil D.), Thursday, 13 December 2012 02:47 (eleven years ago) link

gr80 otm. Forgive people their passions, such that you may care about something. Even if you feel not the need to vocalize.

mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 03:22 (eleven years ago) link

You'd have to know this guy and see how apeshit he goes over the idea of anyone not caring about football to get it. Obviously I understand that people have different interests. That's why I said "digs" rather than "serious observations."

Gollum: "Hot, Ready and Smeagol!" (Phil D.), Thursday, 13 December 2012 03:24 (eleven years ago) link

ok yeah thats obnoxious.

personally i love:

1) food/eating
2) watching/occasionally playing sports

but talking about them with friends and strangers and on blogs and message boards is the worst shit ever.

see the good thing about talking about sports w/ people, esp people at work, is that it means you don't have to be talking about something else with them

non-work-related conversation at work should be banned, I don't want to have to deal with that.

I have a bunch of friends and acquaintances who are huge baseball nerds and they all at some point expressed disappointment when they realized that I know and care nothing about baseball. But I love when any two of them somehow cross paths for the first time and five minutes later they're all into it and talking shit to each other, like I was some sort of matchmaker.

joygoat, Thursday, 13 December 2012 06:27 (eleven years ago) link

there's all sorts of peripheral ways to be interested in baseball without actually being interested in baseball. the whole nate silver thing, how that logo to that one team looks like "elb", etc...
