How can you be in 2012 and have no google account whatsoever

mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:42 (eleven years ago) link

you don't need a google account i don't think. it asks you to log in to create maps to share, but you can skip that.

caek, Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:54 (eleven years ago) link

i logged in though. does anyone need a gmail invite?

caek, Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:54 (eleven years ago) link

lol

The rub is that year default map app is still Apple's, but WB nonetheless.

xp - I use other providers for email and social networking, don't post youtube comments, and use flickr rather than picasa for photo sharing. Don't feel like I've been living in the dark ages w/o a google account

Lee626, Thursday, 13 December 2012 06:28 (eleven years ago) link

lol flickr

caek, Thursday, 13 December 2012 07:55 (eleven years ago) link

Apparently you don't actually need to log in to Google, they just make it look like you do.

Alba, Thursday, 13 December 2012 08:09 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, you can skip that step

炒面kampf (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 13 December 2012 08:12 (eleven years ago) link

they don't do a very good job of making it look like you need to. it's pretty clear.

caek, Thursday, 13 December 2012 08:13 (eleven years ago) link

Completely missed your post, caek, sorry. I hate being that guy.

Alba, Thursday, 13 December 2012 08:19 (eleven years ago) link

fist bump

caek, Thursday, 13 December 2012 08:19 (eleven years ago) link

This is very good.

So is the new Flickr app, btw. Bye, Instagram

stet, Thursday, 13 December 2012 09:52 (eleven years ago) link

ok so might be ready to update to iOS6 now - is the app OK, street view works as before?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 13 December 2012 10:22 (eleven years ago) link

brilliantly

炒面kampf (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 13 December 2012 10:40 (eleven years ago) link

it's all slightly different of course, but accounted for

炒面kampf (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 13 December 2012 10:40 (eleven years ago) link

is there a way to orient the map the same way as the iphone?

caek, Thursday, 13 December 2012 10:52 (eleven years ago) link

found that very useful coming out of subway stations, etc.?

caek, Thursday, 13 December 2012 10:52 (eleven years ago) link

i see you can turn the map arbitrarily, but can if figure out which way you've got the phone pointing

caek, Thursday, 13 December 2012 10:53 (eleven years ago) link

got it, ignore me

caek, Thursday, 13 December 2012 10:54 (eleven years ago) link

Ooh, two finger swipe down gives you a 3d view including buildings. And the tube map overlay is really nice too. This is grebt.

stet, Thursday, 13 December 2012 11:09 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, this is great!

So, should I upgrade my iphone 4 to OS6 now? Only things stopping me are fear of it being slow, and google maps. But will I now have apple maps in citymapper, rather than google ones, even after updating? I've seen talk of a google maps API, but not sure what this will mean in practice.

toby, Thursday, 13 December 2012 11:35 (eleven years ago) link

And, tagging on, should I upgrade a 3G?....

ljubljana, Thursday, 13 December 2012 11:40 (eleven years ago) link

My 3Gs is on iOS 6 and it's about the same speed it was on 5, tbh.

You do have apple maps in citymapper, unfortunately. But the transit directions I tried in the new maps app earlier were spot-on.

stet, Thursday, 13 December 2012 11:44 (eleven years ago) link

Just upgraded and it's stuck a Passbook app on my first screen, can't remember what was in its spot before :/

ledge, Thursday, 13 December 2012 12:16 (eleven years ago) link

what are the other good Google iOS apps? I love gmail so much that I put Mail into its own little folder so that I never have to look at it again

乒乓, Thursday, 13 December 2012 13:05 (eleven years ago) link

nm, found it

ledge, Thursday, 13 December 2012 14:10 (eleven years ago) link

I don't know if anyone else has been suffering from cripplingly slow apple mail performance but this appears to fix it

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 13 December 2012 14:18 (eleven years ago) link

Bullshit, I downloaded the Google Maps app for iPad last night and iPhone this morning. I think dude just isn't scrolling past the first page of search results. xp

mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 14:47 (eleven years ago) link

yeeah, I mean I think I grabbed the iPhone version on my iPad last night. Or maybe I hallucinated that part, not sure.

mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 14:51 (eleven years ago) link

I searched for Google Maps from my iPhone last night around 12:30 and couldn't find it; this morning it was the third or fourth result

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:32 (eleven years ago) link

Tried Google Maps - I'm sure the maps themselves are better, but the performance is not as good as the native app, feels a lot choppier. Also, it's way too sensitive with the rotation gesture

Nhex, Thursday, 13 December 2012 17:37 (eleven years ago) link

works sweet as hell on an iPhone 4s, looks like they're doing some weird not-quite-vector graphics thing still

mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 17:43 (eleven years ago) link

Have been hearing scattered reports of choppiness, which it definitely isn't on my phones. I wonder if networking's involved. Will go try on shitty 3g and see

stet, Thursday, 13 December 2012 17:45 (eleven years ago) link

on iPhone 5 w/ verizon lte it's super fast

the late great, Thursday, 13 December 2012 20:51 (eleven years ago) link

iTunes 11.0.1 is out too. Fixes most of the glaring bugs so far (unless you consider iTunes itself to be one large bug)

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 14 December 2012 01:24 (eleven years ago) link

Now that I could consider upgrading, is there a consensus as to whether iOS6 slows down iPhones 4?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 14 December 2012 10:54 (eleven years ago) link

I upgraded yesterday and my iPhone 4 seems just peachy. No slower than before, as far as I can tell.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 14 December 2012 12:27 (eleven years ago) link

Same here on my 4S -- maybe it's my imagination, but a couple things seem to be running a little faster.

Just upgraded and it's stuck a Passbook app on my first screen, can't remember what was in its spot before :/

Yeah, that was weird. I had to shuffle that screen around again and have no idea if I restored it to its previous state.

Brad C., Friday, 14 December 2012 14:37 (eleven years ago) link

On my 4S it didn't seem slower

Nhex, Friday, 14 December 2012 15:31 (eleven years ago) link

i think the missing app that passbook replaced on the homescreen is youtube

the late great, Wednesday, 26 December 2012 19:21 (eleven years ago) link

yep! I only just got the phone activated this morning but yeah, noticeably faster.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 26 December 2012 19:27 (eleven years ago) link

mega fast

the late great, Wednesday, 26 December 2012 19:31 (eleven years ago) link

Just ordered a new work machine, a maxed-out 27" iMac.

WilliamC, Wednesday, 26 December 2012 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

I bought a new i7 mac mini as my present to myself. It's so much quicker than my 2008 era iMac.

treefell, Wednesday, 26 December 2012 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

iphone 5 I love you but I just paid $20 for an extra cable

乒乓, Friday, 28 December 2012 00:14 (eleven years ago) link
