don't forget sports talk radio, it is key to the mindset

mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:44 (eleven years ago) link

sports chat is about a half step above when two co-workers pass in the hall and say "hey, how are you?" "good, and youself?". neither of them gives a fuck. sports fills the dead space between people who don't want to be there together. or between people who are excruciatingly boring and have not explored the world beyond what's been handed to them ... and wtf do you want w/ them anyway.

Spectrum, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

Sports are so incredibly boring unless you are playing them yourself. Televised games function as ambiance for me to take a nap to.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:59 (eleven years ago) link

I do care when I ask people how they are! Maybe I'm the only one. If I don't care I just say "hey" or "hi"

mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:03 (eleven years ago) link

Baseball games are great when you treat them like a picnic. Rooting for the Nats during the playoffs was way more stressful and reminded me that I don't actually like getting invested in sports at all.

I like going to this bar where the bartender really knows baseball from having played it. His commentary on the game makes it about twenty times better.

mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:11 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, sports are fun to watch, probably about the same as being a crank. whenever i'm about to get into sports I'm always afraid I'll get -too- into them ... don't know how much people who like sports actually like sports or just can't find anything better to be interested in.

Spectrum, Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

xp is the name of this bar "Cheers?"

jesus christ this is the most internet board nerd back slapping conversation. like straying into "i dont even OWN a tv" levels

tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:18 (eleven years ago) link

I have a pretty sweet tv

mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:18 (eleven years ago) link

I don't even own a tv and it only sucks when I want to watch sports

iatee, Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:20 (eleven years ago) link

I don't dislike sports, and I go to my share of baseball games and watch football and b-ball occasionally on TV and whatever, but I'm not INTO SPORTS (esp. football) like these office dudes are. Like I couldn't give fewer shits who is pursuing whom in the draft or whether the offensive coordinator should be doing X or why they're starting Y when he only had 30 rushing yards or w/e. I just want to watch the game.

College sports, though, GTFO. Especially if you didn't even go to the college in question. Like aforementioned dude getting really into Michigan simply because they're the big OSU rival, and he went to Ohio U., so anything that makes OSU fans miserable is now cool and, you know, just stop it.

Gollum: "Hot, Ready and Smeagol!" (Phil D.), Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:22 (eleven years ago) link

are you kidding that is the best thing about sports, hating random teams for random reasons

iatee, Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:23 (eleven years ago) link

sports are cool but hey keep on trying to connect with people by talking about shitty bands that no one else knows about

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:27 (eleven years ago) link

ahaha, i'm being a total fucking snob here, ugly quality i know. sports are fun, totally get why people are into it ... more about frustration of being stuck in the mundane and other french film bullshit.

Spectrum, Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:29 (eleven years ago) link

fwiw my WoW server had a fantasy baseball league i was in. so yeah, out nerd that.

bnw, Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:36 (eleven years ago) link

haha awesome

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:37 (eleven years ago) link

Fantasy football is such a weird concept. A friend told me he was into it a few months ago, pausing beforehand to say "This is gonna sound really nerdy". I'm a lifetime videogames scifi movies oldschool nerd so now i'm confronted with this thing that is 'nerdy' in its attention to detail, yet it's all about football, which was always the polar opposite of nerdy in middle/high school. But yeah 'nerdy' getting co-opted what's new?

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:40 (eleven years ago) link

it's about numbers and stats, which has always been nerdy

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:43 (eleven years ago) link

I was so disappointed when I found out fantasy football didn't involve valkyries and dragons and stuff.

besides Sunny Real Estate (dog latin), Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:43 (eleven years ago) link

i stopped giving a shit about sports as soon as i moved away from my cow town high school and was no longer required to pretend to like football

horse motivator (clouds), Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:45 (eleven years ago) link

SPORTS JOCKS vs. ART NERDS is such a played-out dichotomy that doesn't really exist anymore and maybe never did

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:45 (eleven years ago) link

unless you're still in high school maybe

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:46 (eleven years ago) link

sports nerds are and have always been some of the nerdiest people around. those kids trading baseball cards and memorizing career batting averages were not "cool" or "jocks."

Mordy, Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:47 (eleven years ago) link

baseball nerds are their own thing really

iatee, Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:50 (eleven years ago) link

n/a, anti-sports is more than just the celebrated jock v. nerd struggle we all know and love. it's about misplaced cultural priorities in our zeitgeist! the amazing cornucopia of life, the infinite gradations of the experience of being alive, the challenges we face as a species, all encased for us in our incredibly short life spans that end in eternal blackness in a flash ... and then we got dudes in tights running around with a ball being chased by other dudes in tights. that's the most important thing we've got, i guess. it's good and everything, i like it personally, but if you looked at our society and talked to people, you'd think that's all there was and ever will be out there.

Spectrum, Thursday, 13 December 2012 17:12 (eleven years ago) link

are you 13?

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 13 December 2012 17:14 (eleven years ago) link

Dude our SOCIETY is 13.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 13 December 2012 17:17 (eleven years ago) link

i feel like i squandered a zingpportunity there :(

bnw, Thursday, 13 December 2012 17:18 (eleven years ago) link

it's a good thing I'm no longer a mod because the temptation to put in a substitution on certain posters that turns whatever they write into "WAKE UP SHEEPLE" is overwhelming right now

actually I could probably figure out a regex that appended "WAKE UP SHEEPLE" to the end of every post, which would be funnier

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Thursday, 13 December 2012 17:21 (eleven years ago) link

I think there are more sports-inclined coworkers I'm going to deal with in the coming year, but I've gone months without really being around people having a sports conversation. Just depends where you go, I guess.

mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 17:23 (eleven years ago) link

ppppppffffffffffffffff i'm not talking about waking sheeple up or anything, just talking about a perspective in a tongue-in-cheek sorta way. but if that like shocks your square mind, man, that's your deal.

LOL great thread

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 13 December 2012 17:35 (eleven years ago) link

it kind of blew my mind when my sports-nerd office mate and i learned we were both into bay area rap, but of course he's like waaaay nerdier about it and like casually talking about obscure Mac Dre mixtapes from 97 and it's going over my head the same way the last round of MLB trades did
