Sonny has a very nice website here http://www.sonnycurtis.com/.
Joe, in keeping with his vagabond ways, does not some to have one.

I'll leave it to others to start naming the various hits, assuming others show up.

Looks like this is going to be another award winning thread.

i like johnnie taylor's version of "games people play." and deep purple's version of "hush." otoh, "love is all around," "i fought the law," "walk right back." otoh, "don't it make you wanna go home" and "rose garden." otoh ... "love is all around"! "i fought the law"!

coin flip.

Joe also played on Blonde on Blonde. And wrote "Down In The Boondocks" and "Walk A Mile In My Shoes." His own versions of his songs that were hits for others are all really good and sometimes, at least in the case of "Walk A Mile" and "Hush," the vocal on the cover version is pretty similar to his original vocal.

Sonny seems to have an extensive array of recordings and even Country-charting hits under his own name, all of which I only learned about today whilst looking at his web page. Under the rubric "News" is a picture of an album of his from 1964 entitled Beatle Hits: Flamenco Style Guitar. He also wrote lots of jingles, although I haven't figured out if any of them are familiar ones.

He wrote the Kingsmen's last hit, entitled "Bo Diddley Bach" which reached #128 on the Billboard charts.

Ha, I was going to send an email to the Michael Shelley show saying he should interview Sonny Curtis, but of course he has already done so

Joe South

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 15 March 2008 20:55 (sixteen years ago) link

According to his bio, Sonny literally grew up in a hole in the ground, which should could for something.

Looks like this one is gonna be a photo finish.

Another failed Sonny Curtis-related thread

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Looks like ILX System is going to have to cast the tie-breaker vote.

I guess I better not even bother with my follow-up

Maybe I would have had better luck starting a thread about Sonny Curtis, steel guitar player for The Jones Boys.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 15:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Wow. Just noticed this thread.

Sonny made history as the first rock n roller to record with a Fender Stratocaster, which he played on such records as "Blue Days, Black Nights," and his own composition, "Rock Around With Ollie Vee."

"Rock Around ..." is great. But so is Joe South's "Walk a Mile in my Shoes"

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:12 (sixteen years ago) link

I love the chorus of "Walk a Mile". I never paid too much attention to the lyrics to that one, which get bashed in that other Joe South thread.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 20 March 2008 00:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Whoa. Good thing I voted for Sonny.

nine years pass...

never knew Curtis wrote "The Straight Life," which i knew as a kid from Glen Campbell's version. But have you heard Bing Crosby's?
