my personal pick is Forklift. all crackle, no fat, phoned-in gary peformance, lyrics Never to be fully deciphered - 110% pave, and it's great cos you get tired of singing along to the chorus so you actually LISTEN

the way SM sings "and in the parking lot is the sedan he bought he never, he never complains when it's hot" in 'grounded' is so brilliant- the emphasis he puts on "is the sedan he bought he never" is really unusual & sounds like he's saying "anybody" or something else... i love songs where the sound of the words is more important or have more impact than the words themselves. or they create a new sound, sounds like made up words. i don't know, it's hard to describe, similar thing happens in the chorus of 'another nail in my heart' by squeeze, most nirvana songs...

grounded has a slight element of socio-political commentary and i think of pavement as pretty apolitical, gold sounds is more pavement-y to me

Grounded. It's a small masterpiece.

Never really saw why Grounded is so well liked.

My default is Give It A Day

I like Grounded a lot, but not my fave.

If I were allowed a POT, it would be Box Elder and Trigger Cut.

But as I'm not, Box Elder I think.

Gonna go with those that say "Trigger Cut." Is it the very best song by Pavement? I'm not sure. But of the songs that could credibly be called the best song they ever wrote, it is the one, to me, which is most dead-center of the concept of what it is to be a Pavement song. There is no feature characteristic of Pavementness that it lacks.

It's one of the songs where Malk is clearly trying to express something earnest, but can't do it directly, so it comes out sounding like nonsense. I prefer this to the sheer goof-off-itude of songs like "Fame Throwa", "Stereo" etc. (and I like those songs a lot!)
