At least two people were shot in a shooting at Lone Star College in north Houston, Texas. Witnesses on the scene say the shooting may have escalated after a heated argument, possibly over a bad grade.

One dead after Alabama school bus shooting, child seized

(Reuters) - Officials in Alabama said one person was killed on Tuesday after local media reported that a gunman boarded a school bus and shot the driver several times, then fled with a 6-year-old child passenger and holed up in an underground bunker.

The Dale County Sheriff's Department said in a statement there had been one fatality as a result of the incident in Midland City and that the area had been evacuated after law enforcement arrived at the scene.

The department said it was releasing only limited details, so it was not immediately clear whether the person who was killed was the bus driver.

It confirmed that a child was at the scene. Earlier, the department had said a command post had been set up near the site where the suspected shooter was barricaded.

The Dothan Eagle newspaper said the gunman was in a bunker near his home hours after the shooting.

The shooting comes as the nation is on edge about gun violence, especially in schools, after a gunman shot dead 20 students and six staff members at a Connecticut elementary school last month, stoking a national debate on gun control.

The sheriff's department said multiple agencies were assisting with the incident and local area schools would be closed on Wednesday.

Alabama media reported that the incident happened at approximately 4 p.m. local time when the suspect demanded the driver let a student off the bus. When the driver refused, the suspect boarded the bus, then shot the driver before taking the child and fleeing the scene.

Law enforcement officials are negotiating with the suspect, according to media reports.

man when the victim is some poor old dude/lady like here it really gets me. drive a school bus either 1) for years or 2) to make some extra money in your retirement and get killed for your troubles. God damn it

A neighbor said the guy had moved in a couple years ago, started working on what he told 'em was a fallout shelter right away. A fallout shelter, in this century. He's prob got all kinds of supplies in there, and bad storms are forecast, maybe a tornado, so this may go on a while.

'I talked to a girl that was riding the bus, and she told me that he came on the bus and said, "I need two kids between the ages of 6 and 8,"' Michael Creel, Dykes' neighbor, told the Eagle. 'The driver told him, "I can’t do that." (The driver) tried to get away from the guy.'

Mass Shooting in Phoenix Office Building Hours After Gabrielle Giffords Testifies at Congressional Hearing on Gun Control

Multiple people have reportedly been shot inside an office complex in Phoenix just hours after former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee to deliver a statement on the need for more gun control.

According to local police, as many as four people were shot inside an office belonging to a mortgage company, and the suspect — described as a while male in his 60s — has fled the scene.

Details concerning the victims' condition has not been released.

The scene remains active, and police have shut down several streets near the area where the shooting took place.

specific needs The Alabama bunker's neighbor said Dykes once threatened to shoot his kids because his dogs, not his kids, got in Dykes' yard. And the neighbor's kids were on the bus when Dykes boarded it (apparently the hostage isn't one of this neighbor's kids though). Also, he'd stopped another neighbor, one with his kid in the back seat, then shot at the vehicle when the neighbor drove away. Because of this incident, Dykes (who wasn't in custody)was supposed to appear in court, either yesterday or today, I didn't get that last. The hostage is supposed to take some kind of medication every day.

dow, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:12 (eleven years ago) link

"The boy has been given medication," maybe through the PVC pipe used for negotiations. This guy's a textbook case. Dykes "beat her dog to death with a lead pipe"? Shooting at the neighbor was a misdemeanor. Let's hear it for traditional lawdom.

A former Navy SEAL and the author of “American Sniper,” Chris Kyle, was shot and killed along with another man Saturday at a Texas gun range, a county sheriff has told the Texas news media.

So many layers of tragic irony.

The sheriff of Erath County, Tommy Bryant, said Mr. Kyle, 38, and a second man were found dead at Rough Creek Lodge’s shooting range west of Glen Rose, according to The Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The Stephenville Empire-Tribune. Glen Rose is about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

Kyle wrote the best-selling book, “American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History,” detailing his 150-plus kills of insurgents from 1999 to 2009.

Mr. Bryant did not immediately return phone calls to The Associated Press seeking comment. A woman who answered the phone at the lodge where the shooting occurred declined to comment and referred calls to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators did not immediately release the name of the second victim, according to the newspapers.

Witnesses told sheriff’s investigators that a gunman opened fire on the men around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, then fled in a pickup truck belonging to one of the victims, according to The Star-Telegram. The newspapers said a 25-year-old man was later taken into custody in Lancaster, southeast of Dallas, and that charges were expected.

What stands out for me in this story: (from an article in the papers here)

On Sunday, the police identified the shooter as Eddie Ray Routh, a 25-year-old veteran with a history of mental illness who had served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The police offered no information about a possible motive.

How was a guy with a history of mental illness able to serve? Let alone now be allowd to handle guns.

Manti and the Catfish (Trayce), Monday, 4 February 2013 01:13 (eleven years ago) link

his mental illness might have been triggered or exacerbated by his service

veryupsetmom (harbl), Monday, 4 February 2013 01:21 (eleven years ago) link

That occurred to me yeah. Its not clear from the way thats written if they mean he was ill anyway, or because of service. The latter'd certainly put things in an obvioys perspective. This and the bunker guy are both ex vets. I get the impression mental health care post war for vets is pretty peicemeal and pathetic, which is dreadful.
