i've listened to "whenever, wherever, water" like 40 times in the last 24 hours

yeah i went through a phase late summer where all i listened to on the way to work every day was "drowndeep: hula"

i wrote an extended thing about "pretty wings" four years ago but no way would i show that to anyone

This guy is one of the all-time greats. Hope the next album is the one where he finally gets recognized as such outside of the usual neo-soul circles.

yahhh, Embrya is my favorite Maxwell album and *ducks* it's a better album than D had released at that point, although dream was right that everyone in D'Angelo's lane should have been fearful of Voodoo

I generally Maxwell >> D'Angelo but they're doing different things so I dunno

i feel like they were easier to compare in say '96 when there was only brown sugar and urban hang suite. both embrya and voodoo are so elsewhere.

and of course now and blacksummers'night are extremely distinct from both each other and his starting point

it made sense to compare them at a time when they were merely 'male R&B singers who were more like each other than either was like R. Kelly,' but that's long since been a useless and reductive way to think about either.
