i've listened to "whenever, wherever, water" like 40 times in the last 24 hours

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 December 2012 15:19 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i went through a phase late summer where all i listened to on the way to work every day was "drowndeep: hula"

k3vin k., Thursday, 27 December 2012 00:35 (eleven years ago) link

i wrote an extended thing about "pretty wings" four years ago but no way would i show that to anyone

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Sunday, 30 December 2012 02:20 (eleven years ago) link

an eagle named "small government" (call all destroyer), Sunday, 30 December 2012 02:21 (eleven years ago) link

nope, i wrote it in 2009 and i spend way too much time shitting on maxwell's pre-blacksummer'snight stuff (why) and sade (what was wrong w/ me)

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Sunday, 30 December 2012 02:27 (eleven years ago) link

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 30 December 2012 02:28 (eleven years ago) link

think i was trying to situate "pretty wings" as kind of new, "realer" sonic territory for him but he had already flexed plenty with now so whatever @ 21-year-old me

only on my most recent listen to blacksummers'night did i realize how great the drumming is???

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 11 July 2013 21:35 (ten years ago) link

This guy is one of the all-time greats. Hope the next album is the one where he finally gets recognized as such outside of the usual neo-soul circles.

Actually, that's greedy. I just hope the album gets released soon.

I listened to Now this morning while showering; it convinced me I've never gotten tired of "Lifetime."

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 11 July 2013 21:39 (ten years ago) link

re drums - Help Somebody (the final minute!) and Bad Habits especially.

caek da killa (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 11 July 2013 21:42 (ten years ago) link

also the end of the "phoenix rise" instrumental

album is a treasure trove of great outros

yeah what the fuck !!

But you know, it's gonna be more hi-fi. Do you know Sam Smith? That "Latch" song, man. Not that we’re doing full Disclosure, but for me one of the ways God has been so good is I work with the people who are the best on some level.

r|t|c, Thursday, 11 July 2013 22:01 (ten years ago) link

no idea how to interpret those sentences but they sound neat

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 11 July 2013 22:03 (ten years ago) link

my interpretaton is he's going to zhuzh it up a bit

r|t|c, Thursday, 11 July 2013 22:07 (ten years ago) link

"Latch" yes, not "full Disclosure" right on. He knows exactly how much we can stand of them.

"gods" is astounding wtf

J0rdan S., Thursday, 11 July 2013 22:27 (ten years ago) link

right?

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 11 July 2013 22:30 (ten years ago) link

damn this is gorgeous. Reminds me a bit of T T D'Arby.

But Sade's band always kind of sucked. She made the material interesting.

UHS is my least favorite Maxwell; it's often boring. But Hampton's D'Angelo worship leads her to batshit conclusions.

yahhh, Embrya is my favorite Maxwell album and *ducks* it's a better album than D had released at that point, although dream was right that everyone in D'Angelo's lane should have been fearful of Voodoo

lady steendriver (The Reverend), Friday, 12 July 2013 16:58 (ten years ago) link

i'd agree that embrya is better than brown sugar *also ducks*

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 12 July 2013 17:21 (ten years ago) link

that doesn't seem too controversial?

caek da killa (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 12 July 2013 17:28 (ten years ago) link

Brown Sugar is way more ::canon::

lady steendriver (The Reverend), Friday, 12 July 2013 17:31 (ten years ago) link

a lot of people are actively bored by embrya iirc. i'd take issue with my own position actually if it were a few years ago

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 12 July 2013 17:31 (ten years ago) link

I generally Maxwell >> D'Angelo but they're doing different things so I dunno

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 12 July 2013 17:36 (ten years ago) link

i feel like they were easier to compare in say '96 when there was only brown sugar and urban hang suite. both embrya and voodoo are so elsewhere.

and of course now and blacksummers'night are extremely distinct from both each other and his starting point

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 12 July 2013 17:39 (ten years ago) link

yeah otm

caek da killa (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 12 July 2013 17:41 (ten years ago) link

agreed, i don't think of MWell and Dlo as similar artists at all, any more so than Ke$ha and TSwift are

i think theyre more similar than that

just sayin, Saturday, 13 July 2013 01:53 (ten years ago) link

it made sense to compare them at a time when they were merely 'male R&B singers who were more like each other than either was like R. Kelly,' but that's long since been a useless and reductive way to think about either.
