Tech journalist as a half-empty jar of mayonnaise seems somewhat on the nose, although not how the writer intended.

I know some iOS apps are definitely this way but claiming iOS is the leading edge for "flatness" is straight-up bullshit when Windows 8 exists
― mh, Friday, 18 January 2013 22:28 (eleven years ago) link
things do look real crisp on nice displays, though
not that i think its a particularly important point but the retina display way predates windows 8
― lag∞n, Friday, 18 January 2013 22:34 (eleven years ago) link
not sure what we're supposed to do if we eliminate all skeumorphism, besides just everything looking like flat squares, who actually wants that
― zero dark (s1ocki), Friday, 18 January 2013 22:49 (eleven years ago) link
Most UIs aren't that skeumorphic! There aren't really that many real life items with drop-down menus and shit.
Windows 8 probably a mediocre reference point here, but I feel like saying creative iOS developers own "flatness" is kind of wrong-headed.
Windows 8 prerelease 1 did come out a month before iPhone 4S, though.
― mh, Friday, 18 January 2013 23:03 (eleven years ago) link
ya I mean 'flat design' has been around forever really and its kinda an imprecise distinction, the thing I found intersting abt the piece is the observation that hi def screens allow for more sophisticated design
― lag∞n, Saturday, 19 January 2013 00:01 (eleven years ago) link
also iirc the iPhone 4 was the 1st one w retina

His argument is basically "we can have games with helvetica that look like they're printed paper"
― mh, Saturday, 19 January 2013 00:42 (eleven years ago) link
if u can make software that looks like its printed thats a huge difference!
― lag∞n, Saturday, 19 January 2013 00:46 (eleven years ago) link
^^^ the point abt "you don't see high-gloss reflection w/drop shadows and textures in print" is a good one.
― stet, Saturday, 19 January 2013 01:38 (eleven years ago) link
gotta say tho I have decided that Ikea's corporate identity switch to Verdana was an inspired move. Futura was too far on the "aspirational" end of the scale. Verdana may be an odd choice but it's a pretty good one when you're at the store seeing it in context.

the first sentence of this interview of marco on the brooks report reads like it was written by a 12 year old:
One thing that has really been on my mind lately is how publishing is changing.
― ☕ (diamonddave85), Monday, 25 February 2013 22:51 (eleven years ago) link
In conclusion, publishing is in a time of great change.

Ever since the beginning of time, man has wondered about how publishing is changing.
― 乒乓, Monday, 25 February 2013 23:07 (eleven years ago) link
Another thing I thought was interesting about publishing was how it is changing.
― my god i only have 2 useless beyblade (silby), Monday, 25 February 2013 23:08 (eleven years ago) link
ha. sentence 2:
Many think it is a bit crazy that I went with a paywall, but even more crazy is that I was thinking of shutting down the site as it is and doing a periodical on the iPad instead (cooler heads prevailed).
i think it's crazy you expect people to pay for sentences written like this, yes.
