I'm listening to Tusk now, and while there are a million little moments on the record that I could mention, right now I want to say the background vocals here are some of my favorite ever. Just gorgeous.

I picked up Future Games a couple of months ago, being curious as to the pre-Buckingham/Nicks stuff. Lovely album, especially the Danny Kirwan songs. Also like Bob Welch's title track a lot...

Tango in the Night has a few duds (the slow ones) but the good is fantastic...the sound is so hollowed out. the new wave (kate bush even) touches aren't expert so much as just mercenary.

If anyone sees a copy of Tusk fer sale in Toronto, e-mail me and ye shall reap a reward.

sadly no! Have not got my own ticket. Is it sold out already?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 00:47 (twenty years ago) link

sold out super super quick unfortunately. i saw a pair of 3rd row tickets go for $1000 on ebay a week ago..

Funny, I was also listening to 'Tusk' last night. 'Beautiful Child' is awe-inspiring.

i love it too!

i seem to remember smog doing a great cover of it for a peel session once, but i can't find it right now.

so, I'm gathering that Then Play On is essential pre-Buckingham FM. What else is? Is there a decent compilation of this era? I have to admit to having never knowingly heard any of it.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Hot tip for DJs -- drop "Seven Wonders" in at the end of your set when things are winding down. Actually, "Everywhere" works well, too -- both have a devastating sense of melancholy underpinning the bouncy 4/4 -- but "Seven Wonders" has that awesome long-gaze pathos. You will break hearts and make tears.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Saturday, 29 May 2004 16:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Holy fuck - best band ever!!

Listen to John on the outro to "Say That You Love Me"! Listen to that fucker start to get all "rococo" and shit yet bet completely 100% in that fucking beat. God, he was unbelievably great. Him and Mick. What a rhythm section. Unreal in their kick-assness.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 30 May 2004 09:00 (nineteen years ago) link

agreed. i think mick is easily one of my top 3 drummers

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Sunday, 30 May 2004 09:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Mick is always so SOLID. but not in a boring way. I can't put my finger on it. I mean, he holds time so well. But it;s never boring. Yet, he doesn't get all fill crazy. It's just, like, the most solid time you will ever hear. I think he tends to play just ever so slightly ahead of the beat; or something like that. In any case, he PUSHES it, which is what a good drummer should do. Yeah. He's great, fun, invigorating.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 30 May 2004 09:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Has anyone reda his book? just picked it up on eBay.

Tusk is one of the five greatest rock and roll albums of all time, probably only second to After the Goldrush and maybe Radio City.

Then Play On is also great - I bought that record a few years ago and to this day it is the ONLY record my girl has ever stolen from me. "It's mine," she said, plainly, and it remains in her collection as we speak.

Rmours is also brilliant, duh. Search the "Classic Albums" DVD of Rumours (Aja too, while you're at it, but that's another thread). Search all the Peter Green era records.

After Mirage, the records are all spotty but ALL contain a few songs worth the dollar or two you'll pay for the vinyl. Lindsey Buckingham is one of my all time favorite guitarists - so imaginative, ambitious, and just a tad insane.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 30 May 2004 18:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Buckingham's playing on the s/t and Rumours is great - he's really minimal on those songs too, it's not like he's putting in solos all over the place.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 31 May 2004 06:17 (nineteen years ago) link

hey Dom- I like you and respect your taste. And if i recall correctly, you yourself are a musician. This is why I ask you - what is your opinion of the two solos on "Hold Me"? Both the solo in the bridge, where Lindsey plays with this really biting tone, but also in the outro, where he plays this crazy arpeggiated finger-picking shit. God, he was so great. What think ye?

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 31 May 2004 07:12 (nineteen years ago) link

the solos on Hold Me make me all but wet my pants with delight. i think that song is probably my favourite production ever.

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Monday, 31 May 2004 07:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, Jim. You are a fellow traveller, I believe, in the Lindsey love.

you are right about the production. I think I could write a whole book about it, had I a flair for language. But, allow me to highlight (these are a couple PRODUCTION highlights [as Jim said]; I take the technical musical performances of Mick, John, Christine and Lindsey as read):

- the backing vocals. It's like some kind of psychedelic doo-wop!! Seriously, those voices that start low in the mix, and come in and go "Come .. on .. and" "Hold me!" Wow.

Like, Lindsey is all like, yeah, I've got your doo-wop right here! How do you like THESE backing vocals?

- but, the ultimate point in the song, both song-writing and production-wise, is the breakdown that occurs at about the 2:30 mark, after Linsey's brilliant solo ends .. a total breakdown, with nothing but Christine's pristine piano and Lindsey beautiful acoustic guitar. WOW!!!!!!!

(actually, an even better thing about the pure PRODUCTION of this cut, is the way that acoustic guitar sort of creeps into the mix at about the 2:00 mark --- just listen to that acoustic guitar start strumming those chords behind Lindsey's solo ... and seconds later, there comes that great breakdown with the piano/acoustic-guitar bliss)

and then of course Lindsey's great finger-picking outro solo .. and boo-yah

best band ever

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 31 May 2004 07:33 (nineteen years ago) link

actually, fuck you know what - I'm listening to it again just now , and I think he probably was using a pick on that outro solo. It's just too fast to think otherwise, i think.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 31 May 2004 07:37 (nineteen years ago) link

<guitar world reader mail>His solos on this song really show off what kind of guitar player he is. The first one reminds me of the way he played on "The Chain", where the band is really aggressive, but he's just sitting on these long, sustained notes (and making them sound interesting). The second shows off this sick technical ability, but still making it fit in the song. That's his thing, he always plays to the song.</guitar world reader mail>

dleone (dleone), Monday, 31 May 2004 07:40 (nineteen years ago) link

but it's true, and there's very few guitarists with that much obvious skill that play to the song rather than to show off.

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Monday, 31 May 2004 07:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually just nabbed the Mirage tour show in LA 82 on Ebay VHS. Remember how I dug this when it was on HBO years ago and now has a certain strange quality in retrospect. Indeed, the guitar is dazzling throughout, though Stevie's pipes were a bit winded at this point from the excesses of the Rumours and Tusk tours/recordings (though I am sure excesses were still very present on this 82 tour and future ones!) She didn't quite 'get there' for her usually over-the-top Rhiannon, but in the finale Sisters of the Moon she goes completely bananas and is speaking in tongues while scooping up stuffed animals from fans. Wow!

Played "Trouble" from Lindsey's solo Law and Order a few weeks back and it sounded damn good....

Once was going through donations for the Record Fair and had SO many copies of Tusk I actually made a Box of Tusk! 3 bucks a pop and they all went too, so, there ya go.

"I'm gathering that Then Play On is essential pre-Buckingham FM. What else is? Is there a decent compilation of this era?"
Not to my knowledge, at least not in the US. Bare Trees is probably the best post-Green/pre Buckingham LP. It's very mellow, though. If you dig Then Play On you'll flip over "The Green Manalishi" and "Man of the World." Don't know why Rhino/WB haven't done more w/ the Mac catalogue. There was a smoking live Mac show from 1969 that came out on vinyl in the late 80s.

lovebug starski, Monday, 31 May 2004 19:39 (nineteen years ago) link

You guys' enthusiasm is infectious! Pity me, the ignoramus, who is only really familiar with Rumours and all of the other obvious hits.

I did enjoy that "Classic Albums" look at "Rumours". In fact, I've got this elaborate theory that rock 'n roll record production was at its creative zenith back aroound '76-79, until the digital age came along and spoiled everything. I don't really know what the hell I'm talking about though....

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 3 June 2004 08:24 (nineteen years ago) link

I mean, my god, the fucking DRUMMING. Everything is dissolving in little millipads and then Mick is just so ALERT in the middle of it all, his fills just rip, it's fucking incredible. Also, the drumming is almost exactly the same as that of Eno's "Sky Saw."

Obviously it took lots of coke to be able to play at that moderate a tempo.

I just learned that Christine McVie wrote 'Don't Stop.' I'd always assumed this was a Lindsey song because it was so simple and he sang it, I guess. I like her stuff a lot though.

Christine was the best songwriter. OTM Matos. "Brown Eyes," "Warm Ways," "Little Lies," "Think About Me" (Christine can rock!), "Love in Store," "Hold Me" - what a list of credits...

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 March 2005 01:51 (nineteen years ago) link

you forgot "Over My Head" -- that might be her best! "Warm Ways" is so pretty. I could live inside that one. I even like "Sugar Daddy". I love the way she sings "and when I get little hungry" *swoon*

how about the coda to "Say You Love Me" -- "falling falling faaaaallling", perfect

I could die happily if "That's All For Everyone" were playing full blast at the time. Just wait until the harmonies start at 1:42 and then push the toaster into the tub with me.

Bare Trees
Heroes are Hard to Find
Kiln House
Penguin
Mystery To Me
Future Games

trappist monkey, Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Probably. Bare Trees, in particular, is very strong. Danny Kirwan's "Dust" from that is one of the best FM tracks of any period.

dlp9001, Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:59 (nineteen years ago) link

"Say You Will" might have been a near-classic (a) had Christine consented to contribute songs (b) it would've been shorter. In that VH-1 documentary on the making of the album, he was apparently quite pissed it wasn't a double album...

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 20 March 2005 00:01 (nineteen years ago) link

"Kiln House" is okay, but nothing to really write home about.

J (Jay), Sunday, 20 March 2005 00:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Kiln House is pretty good, actually! I mean, it completely pales in comparison to its mighty predecessor Then Play On, but that's pretty tough competition for any record to overcome. Kiln House still has Spencer and Kirwan, so it still feels a lot like the original group. "Station Man" is pretty great.

I have Bare Trees but haven't listened in a while. I remember liking it though; very mellow record. My local classic rock radio station actually played a track off it last weekend! I was randomly scanning the dial and checked them out for a bit -- they were in the midst of a "deep cuts" weekend.

Haven't heard the rest, but Mystery to Me has the totally awesome single "Hypnotized" -- definitely seek out that song if you haven't heard it, just beautiful. written by Bob Welch. And also further proof that Mick Fleetwood was a great drummer!!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 20 March 2005 00:04 (nineteen years ago) link

"Say You Will" might have been a near-classic (a) had Christine consented to contribute songs (b) it would've been shorter.
