Voted Ride as the essence of Creation.

^ this - Ride were kind of like a Frankenstein hybrid of all that was good abt the Creation roster, and I'm voting for them on that basis (even tho MBV is the obv frontrunner)

rocky dennis horror show (Pillbox), Friday, 8 February 2013 02:16 (eleven years ago) link

Ride and Boo Radleys have my favorite albums. I probably like the apparently much reviled Wake Up! the best (I'm from America, where nobody heard it) but would pick Ride overall.

dlp9001, Friday, 8 February 2013 03:03 (eleven years ago) link

The Boo Radleys are my second favorite band of all time!

2. Super Furry Animals
3. The Jesus & Mary Chain
4. Ride
5. Teenage Fanclub
6. Primal Scream
7. My Bloody Valentine
8. Swervedriver
9. Slowdive
10. Adorable

Bee OK, Friday, 8 February 2013 03:07 (eleven years ago) link

No takers for 18 Wheeler? XD !!!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 8 February 2013 15:46 (eleven years ago) link

They were in my top ten actually. But then I'm odd like that.

Rob M Revisited, Friday, 8 February 2013 15:48 (eleven years ago) link

Swervedriver is definitely my favorite from this list. I would also consider Sugar, but I think of them more as a Rykodisc band.

Moodles, Friday, 8 February 2013 15:49 (eleven years ago) link

Other - The Loft!

(tho voted JAMC)

Ward Fowler, Friday, 8 February 2013 15:51 (eleven years ago) link

Don't forget that Bernard Butler, Nick Heyward and Kevin Rowland were also on the label briefly... although I guess many might want to! :P

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 8 February 2013 15:53 (eleven years ago) link

Hmmm, I have massive residual love for (especially) Primal Scream, Ride, Teenage Fanclub, Boos, and low-level longterm admiration for SFA, but I think MBV will win for me.

they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 8 February 2013 16:10 (eleven years ago) link

Voted Ride. What they released between January 1990 and March 1991 was awe inspiring and incredibly beautiful to me when I was 15.

Trying hard to think of a British guitar album from the 90's that is better than Nowhere.

kraudive, Friday, 8 February 2013 18:12 (eleven years ago) link

Also: Fuck Oasis. Jesus.

kraudive, Friday, 8 February 2013 18:13 (eleven years ago) link

keep in mind I know jack shit about this scene

classic: My Bloody Valentine

great: The Jesus & Mary Chain, Saint Etienne

ok I guess: Slowdive, Ride, Momus, Super Furry Animals

yawn: Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub, The Boo Radleys

fuck this: The House Of Love, Sugar

fun to make fun of: Oasis, most of the above

should listen to: Felt

who?: Swervedriver, Adorable, 18 Wheeler, BMX Bandits, Heavy Stereo, The Telescopes, The Lilac Time, The Membranes, Silverfish, 3 Colours Red

g simmel, Friday, 8 February 2013 18:28 (eleven years ago) link

i'm going with swervedriver.

though i do like the adorable album i have a lot, and actually, those bernard butler albums are rather lovely as well.

mark e, Friday, 8 February 2013 19:05 (eleven years ago) link

I love Felt too but my absolute favourite stuff by them was on Cherry Red.

agree with this sentiment, but their creation stuff still towers over this list of 75% total ass

69, Friday, 8 February 2013 19:11 (eleven years ago) link

Nobody's gonna rep for Silverfish? I adored "Fat Axl" when it came out.

Were they the only Creation band that the Kerrang! set could get into?

I mean at the time, not like "well, all these shoegaze black metallers love that stuff" line. I don't recall reading anything about most of this list in the UK metal press.

(reading list more thoroughly) I take that back: Sugar was adored by the metal press if I recall correctly. Who I will vote for because My Bloody Valentine and Jesus & Mary Chain will get enough votes without me contributing and "Copper Blue" remains one of the most-played albums in my life ever.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Friday, 8 February 2013 19:15 (eleven years ago) link

3 Colours Red also got coverage in Kerrang iirc, and I wouldn't be surprised if Swervedrier got reviewed in there either

Jaap and roids (NickB), Friday, 8 February 2013 20:08 (eleven years ago) link

Kerrang covered Sugar, and it was quite high in the RAW AOY list

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 8 February 2013 20:41 (eleven years ago) link

Nah c'mon this list is at most 20% total ass

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 9 February 2013 00:07 (eleven years ago) link

are we judging this on the records these bands actually released on Creation, cos JAMC would just be Upside Down 7" & Munki, pretty threadbare pickings really
then again just the Kaleidoscope World comp is making me want to vote Chills

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Saturday, 9 February 2013 00:23 (eleven years ago) link

Voted The House of Love. The first great album on Creation.

Manfred Mann meets Man Parrish (ithappens), Saturday, 9 February 2013 09:18 (eleven years ago) link

Good choice, although I prefer the later version of 'Shine On' to the one they did for Creation.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 9 February 2013 18:40 (eleven years ago) link

xpost. Upside Down b/w Vegetable Man kind of is better than most bands' careers. Isn't the Creation documentary called "Upside Down?"

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

LOL!!

Happy to fly the only Adorable flag but this poll reminded me that I've never looked into the Boo Radleys.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 14 February 2013 00:12 (eleven years ago) link

Seeing the rather good Lilac Time all the way at the bottom there makes me kind of sad.

dlp9001, Thursday, 14 February 2013 00:37 (eleven years ago) link

Yes, Lilac Time are rather wonderful. The last album was the first subpar outting. New album "Lilac9" due this spring.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 14 February 2013 02:01 (eleven years ago) link

my bloody valentine would be best on almost any label. what a shame crispy ambulance were on factory. what was the band that covered themselves in orange paint in the video. they were the second best.

OutdoorFish, Thursday, 14 February 2013 02:29 (eleven years ago) link

oasis has beaten the jesus & mary chain.

I vaguely remember that. "You make the sun...(something or other)...". It wasn't very good.

A Yawning Chasm (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 14 February 2013 07:52 (eleven years ago) link

'Shine'? I bet it was 'You make the sun shine'

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 14 February 2013 08:28 (eleven years ago) link

You'd think so, wouldn't you? But it was actually "burst for me".

Tangerine guy Mark Dumais was previously in an indie band called Crash with Kurt Ralske of Ultra Vivid Scene - had an ex who was obsessed with this song by them http://youtu.be/h04dAMBNe0s

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 14 February 2013 12:04 (eleven years ago) link

My vote wouldve lifted oasis above momus, which wouldve been something at least

no them being forced to share a lowly position with pervy nick gives me indescribable pleasure

OutdoorFish, Thursday, 14 February 2013 12:46 (eleven years ago) link

Ugh.

Primal Scream deserve a bit more acclaim than this, surely. Might be a good time to get the Give Out But Don't Give Up reappraisal moving.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 14 February 2013 12:50 (eleven years ago) link

the rolling stones tribute album?

OutdoorFish, Thursday, 14 February 2013 12:53 (eleven years ago) link

Ah, but it was so, so much more than that (disclosure: I haven't heard it)

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 14 February 2013 13:05 (eleven years ago) link

would've voted telescopes, check out the live.aftertaste thing (it's on spotify under "singles" i think) to get an idea of what they're edoing live these days, loud brutal rad guitars, RIFFS, love those guys

Crackle Box, Thursday, 14 February 2013 13:13 (eleven years ago) link

Kind of surprised there's 5 other people who voted SFA.

afriendlypioneer, Thursday, 14 February 2013 19:30 (eleven years ago) link

Was hoping that someone would have at least namechecked the Jazz Butcher. (voted Telescopes myself)

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 14 February 2013 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

or The Legend! - what an artist that was

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 14 February 2013 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

Doesn't surprise me at all that My Bloody Valentine topped the poll, but it has surprised me that there was only one vote for Primal Scream... and I speak as someone who doesn't rate Primal Scream all that highly (I have a soft spot for early Primal Scream, mind).

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 14 February 2013 20:25 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah - I know they're kind of at peak unfashionability these days, but Screamadelica always has admirers and I thought that xtrmntr and some of their later stuff was quite well-regarded.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 14 February 2013 20:35 (eleven years ago) link

it is. but its ilm

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 14 February 2013 20:38 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I was pretty much thinking along similar lines! I'm not a big fan of either Screamadelica or XTRMNTR but I'm aware that those albums have plenty of fans. Oasis aren't terribly fashionable at the moment either, and probably haven't been for many years, but they still managed to put in a better performance, which makes me go "wut?". I can't help but suspect that at least one person voted Oasis just for 'teh LOLz', but then again, who knows?

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 14 February 2013 20:45 (eleven years ago) link

actually the only good vocalist was Lawrence

OutdoorFish, Thursday, 14 February 2013 20:50 (eleven years ago) link

You can understand Oasis provoking apathy - more difficult to understand them provoking anything else tbh - but Primal Scream have done enough stupid stuff that you'd think someone would stick up for the rest.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 14 February 2013 20:50 (eleven years ago) link

Was toying with the idea of updating his wikipedia entry to mention that train journey.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 14 February 2013 22:48 (eleven years ago) link

According to wikipedia he comes from Chelmsford. You wouldn't guess it from his accent.

A Yawning Chasm (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 14 February 2013 22:49 (eleven years ago) link

Apparently he spent so long over the mix of 73 in 83 that Coppola ended up having to use 'The End' instead

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 14 February 2013 22:58 (eleven years ago) link

Would've given the Membranes their only vote, if I'd seen this before now.

never really think of the membranes as a creation band, did they put out much stuff with them?
