Just a quick question: when you drop a new tune, do you monitor it with headphone until it becomes the only track playing or you just monitor it via speakers?

depends where you are or how good your setup is, but i'd say if you want the mix to be precise always do headphones.

OK I agree about the precision. The problem is if I use headphone on one ear it's hard to hear what's going on on the speakers. I can control the levels better if I remove the headphones but at the expense of not knowing which track needs nudging if the mix drifts.

if the monitoring situation is shitty you have to drop using the headphones, or turn the main up in the headphones. I usually take the headphone off halfway so I can hear what everyone else is hearing. But shoulder the headphones so I can check the cue if needed.

@localgarda: yes this is at home and I think speakers position is good enough. I'm afraid my right ear is just not good enough. it's obviously weaker than my left one. this is what standing too close to speakers in clubs causes you.

One day my sister was walking through Jersey City and she found a big poster of a disco lady so she thought I might like it. It's like 3 feet wide and 5 feet tall of Madleen Kane. It's pretty awesome and I'm pretty sure I don't know what to do with it.

I guess it comes down to person taste and mixing technique. Assuming monitoring is half-decent as soon as I can hear it over the main PA I take the headphones off, otherwise it’s hard to know how it will sound combined. But, if your mixing style is super smooth slow blends, knowing exactly how it sounds may not matter.
