Yeah, I know this is probably the exact rongest angle to take on the show, but I'm finding it very interesting navigating my impressions/levels of attraction to certain contestants when they're in drag vs. when they're not in drag.

Alyssa's *almost* attractive but it's like her lips are too big for her and she keeps tripping over them when she talks. Beautiful eyes though.

Coco's blue contacts freak me out. I keep expecting them to shoot lasers

Haha Alyssa looks like Will Arnett in AND out of drag.

Hottest out of drag:

S1: Jade
S2: Tyra, Raven
S3: Raja, Carmen, Mariah
S4: PhiPhi, Lashauwn
S5: Lineysha

xp otm

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:27 (eleven years ago) link

Well, actually, in drag he often reminds me of Hugo Weaving.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:27 (eleven years ago) link

xpost elmo otm! Defnitely Will Arnett out of drag. In drag as mentioned upthread I just get constant Joan Collins, lol

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:28 (eleven years ago) link

in drag he she

Sorry.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:30 (eleven years ago) link

Raven from Season 2 was pretty stunning out of drag. Tyra's crooked eyebrow drove me insane, but otherwise: gorgeous.

That Salon article is really kind of awful, though?

shades of Serena ChaCha

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:44 (eleven years ago) link

yeah the more I think about it the more the condescension in that article really annoys me

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:45 (eleven years ago) link

xxp Yeah, it was that very same strategy that earned Serena the lowest berth of the Untucked gangpile.

Still, I def agree with the recapper Ned shared, pointing out ignorance alone isn't a NAGL, but having *pride in ignorance* is kthxbye.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:47 (eleven years ago) link

there is a grand heritage of cult & camp in gay culture & in drag, but i honestly don't think it's fair to set up grey gardens as some sort of shibboleth of queer culture as so many commenters seem to be doing in their reactions

Interesting tidbit about Honey Mahogany's sequined kaftan-dress

http://sfist.com/2013/02/19/borrowed_kaftan_costs_sfs_only_cont.php

Though honestly anyone saying that the dresses are the only reason she went home are deluuuuuuuusional. She was beautiful but hardly a force of nature performance-wise

older queens are shocked, just SHOCKED that the new generation of gays doesn't share their choice of idols! the Salon article reminded me of this article from last year, in which the writer clutches his pearls and bemoans the waning of judy garland worship

Meh, I wouldn't have had her pegged for the top 5 or anything.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 February 2013 17:05 (eleven years ago) link

Not at all. Good legs though.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 February 2013 17:10 (eleven years ago) link

LOL, that NYT column author's friend seems like boyfriend material to me.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 February 2013 17:26 (eleven years ago) link

I'm 3/4 the way through S2 -- I know that Tyra won but is it just me or does she give off low-level sociopath vibes? Something about the flat affect in the way she talks is just kind of 'off' for me. Or she's just super-immature. Either way, whoa.

I'm especially fond of his non-aggression.

Really hope she wins, but Michelle Visage really has it out for Jinkx.

afaic, that movie did as much to mold my camp sensibilities as anything by Paul Morrissey or John Waters (both of which I came to much later)

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Friday, 1 March 2013 17:33 (eleven years ago) link

Tyra starts the season really bitchy and defensive but ends up being really sweet. The strangest turnaround. (x-post)

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 1 March 2013 17:39 (eleven years ago) link

lol @ the edit, "I AM A THREAT" *snores* hee hee

I hope she goes all the way.

Same here!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 4 March 2013 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

I completely forgot about the narcolepsy.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 4 March 2013 18:21 (eleven years ago) link

And she survived so yay for that. Ivy deserved the win though -- the only other real singer from what I could tell but the dress was inspired.

Gotta say that the Alyssa and her dad moment in Untucked was a heavy emotional hit.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 16:11 (eleven years ago) link

Didn't she have immunity?

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 16:23 (eleven years ago) link

Ha, true re: Jinkx and immunity, I completely forgot about that. She didn't slack, though!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 16:25 (eleven years ago) link

They didn't mention immunity this week. I thought Alyssa was the last one to have it.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 18:02 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, they didn't mention anything about immunity for Ivy this week. It must just cycle out at a certain point.

The moment Jade started talking about her past and tearing up in the to-the-camera interview footage, I knew she was toast. They'd been building her up as the cutest little snake in the grass for awhile now, so the gear shift tipped their hand.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 March 2013 00:03 (eleven years ago) link

Also, I've seen a couple blog recaps point this out (A/V I think?), but I'm pretty damned certain Alyssa and Coco are partially fabricating their bad blood.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 March 2013 00:05 (eleven years ago) link

I'm glad I found this thread! I love Jinkx and am watching Grey Gardens in her honour right now. Most of the rest of them, however..

Felt sort of bad for the queens, having to freestyle to that dirge.

Yeah the song = no great shakes.

The Pointer Sisters were frickin' awesome guest judges though! Bring 'em back anytime!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 00:23 (eleven years ago) link

Love that LaToya is logging her third appearance as a guest judge and still looks afraid of everyone.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 March 2013 00:24 (eleven years ago) link

I'm afraid of her! That nose/chin combination could cut steel.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 00:28 (eleven years ago) link

i realized i liked this season’s queens more as a group than individuals, the banter, the teasing, they all seem to love each other
either of the three will be an ok winner but i donno, certain star quality is missing

the lipsync lollapalooza ep was such a sudden reminder why this show used to be great, absolutely loved it.

scanner darkly, Wednesday, 17 April 2024 01:38 (one week ago) link

Yeah that was a treat! Plane still bugs but I have a feeling either Sapphira or Nymphia has this so I’m content.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 April 2024 05:12 (one week ago) link

nymphia is getting an arc, so a likely candidate, but we haven’t seen her lipsync yet..

scanner darkly, Wednesday, 17 April 2024 18:13 (one week ago) link

Well that answered that question! She put on a SHOW. Sapphira was great but really, no contest. (And gloriously, no Plane in the top two.)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 20 April 2024 17:47 (five days ago) link

Also, great interview:
