rob da bank's headphone special, recorded "binaurally"
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 1 March 2013 10:27 (eleven years ago) link
i think that means it sounds like it was recorded in a bin
lol @ pun, but binaural recording is actually an interesting idea if you're anticipating the outcome being listened to pretty much exclusively on headphones.

Binaural recording is kinda mind-boggling. I have to admit that before I heard of it I hadn't even considered how the ears manage to pick up stuff in 3D.

man i fucking suck at soldering why did i think this was an idea

what are you soldering?

I'd guess a new TRS plug to the headphone cable. I am an EE, and I've failed at this many times

every day i'm solderin
Where do you buy the TRS connector? I bought some cheap ones that made things difficult (not to say my soldering skills don't suck. They do)

places like mouser and digikey, also diy audio places online
good brands are neutrik and switchcraft

What's a good pair of over-the-ear headphones for under $50? Noise cancellation is a plus.

the tip of the input jack on my beloved Grado SR 80s somehow became dislodged from the rest of it and is now stuck inside the headphone output of my computer. i had a nightmare about rats and then woke up to this. is this a situation anyone here has experience dealing with? should i just take my computer to the apple store?
― fervently nice (Treeship), Monday, 29 July 2013 15:17 (ten years ago) link
Apple genius squad was a bust. Told me to replace the logic board. The headphone jack was fixed thanks to the heroic efforts of a PC Richards technician. Going to write a letter to Grado, expressing a sense of betrayal that their headphones were defective... headphones I have loved so dearly.

Im going to make sure my letter to Grado is tear-stained.

yes, my techincal problems are often proceeded by this nightmare

good to know im not the only one who has had this prophetic vision. worst part of the nightmare for me was the embarrassment as i had to run away from the rats - who were only chasing me - while everyone else at the party just chilled.

I suggest you forget the headphones and first find the snitch in your drug cartel.

Just bought the RBH EP2 IEMs after the Wirecutter declared them best in the 200 USD category - not sure I have found the best seal with the Comply tips provided but Random Access Memories is sounding pretty sweet so far.

I got the Grado SR-80s and they sound amazing, but they're really heavy and hurt my ears after an hour or so. Plus they seem to leak sound. I want something for work. Any recs?
― frogbs, Thursday, 24 October 2013 15:22 (ten years ago) link
looking for something more in line with the Sony MDR-NC7 noise cancellors which are not exactly the best sounding but they are light. only problem is the noise cancelling setting seems to blast a lot of random hiss into my ears lately and they don't really sound good with it off.
― frogbs, Thursday, 24 October 2013 15:31 (ten years ago) link
Grado are open cans so that's why they seem to bleed but open cans are much better for your ears than closed.
I wear the igrado at work ( grados light running around model) and they sound so gorgeous. They will feel tight the first few days until the plastic arch kind of wears in.

got some shure SE215s last fall, no troubles so far. hoping that if they go bad it will be the cable, since the earpieces are detachable. great sound after a little break-in period for the fit, but now the ear attachments are getting a little too worn-in - probably time to switch them for a fresh pair.
― j., Monday, February 25, 2013 2:03 AM (7 months ago)
still hands down the best earbuds i've ever used, possibly better than any other travelin' headphones too
― j., Thursday, 24 October 2013 16:37 (ten years ago) link
i like the traditional ones (not the sideways behind the head models) - IMO it's much more the heaviness of the things that seem to crush my ear bones than the sound leaking that makes me not wear them
alternatively, I'd like to know why I get this weird intermittant hiss with the noise cancellers I have. sometimes it's just in one ear and it can get very loud. because I like the way these feel.

has anyone tried a pair of bose (i know) in ears?
― caek, Thursday, 24 October 2013 22:00 (ten years ago) link
nay
the headphone market is such a cottage industry these days, so many small companies out there. best route as usual is to try a few as it's all personal preference but that can get expensive.
― 乒乓, Thursday, 24 October 2013 22:06 (ten years ago) link
Yeah bose are OKAY but value is everything so they really aren't OKAY they are bad for the price. See also BEATS BY DRE.

Bought a pair of AKG 550s from Richer Sounds (reduced to £100!) today to replace my dear departed Grado SR-80s, and they're sorta incredible. It turns out that most of my music collection has loads of stuff going on in it that I couldn't hear before, it's like unlocking a bonus level.

i've been sort happy w/my earbuds but these are really amazing....like the build quality and everything is top notch and honestly they sound better than the beyerdynamics which cost over $100 new when i got them years ago
unreal value

i've been using the sony MDR-V6s for listening-intensive work and i really like them so far.
for more casual listening, i currently have a bid on ebay for the Grado Prestige Series SR-60i Padded Headphones. anyone have experience with those?
― Quincy, M.F. (get bent), Friday, 24 January 2014 16:12 (ten years ago) link
I have a pair, I like them a lot but since I got a pair of AKG K450s I've been using those more often, if only because my ears have adapted to the extra oomph in the bass. And the Grados are slightly uncomfortable listening for more than a couple of hours at a time. One other pain I have with them (which may just because I'm physiologically weird, I dunno) is that when my hair gets beyond a few inches long I'd fairly often get hairs winding their way through the pads into the grille and making it sound like the phones are blown until I manage to extract them. (Somehow feels like I've taken this thread into ILTMI territory.)
― Merdeyeux, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:22 (ten years ago) link
also they are definitely not for public use unless you want beaten up, bystanders will be able to hear the music just about as well as you can.
― Merdeyeux, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:23 (ten years ago) link
though that's all more negative than I mean it to be, they sound great!
― Merdeyeux, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:24 (ten years ago) link
I'm a filthy longhair and I am well aware of that fault with the Grados. I have momentarily mourned their passing many a time.
― ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Friday, 24 January 2014 19:25 (ten years ago) link
Grados are shit build quality but apparently they will fix them if you mail them to Brooklyn or something. Thanks. The way the left and right channels join the main cable like a stethoscope is unbearably poor and eventually breaks. Grado needs help.
― fields of salmon, Friday, 24 January 2014 22:43 (ten years ago) link
I love my SR-80s, but yea the build quality is awful. My cable's a tangled and worn mess. I really want to hear some PSB M4U 1s, because I keep seeing rave reviews for them just about everywhere (including the curmudgeon corner that is head-fi)

these skullcandy noise-cancellation headphones seem to flatten out all the sound and have no dynamics. i noticed the difference when i heard something on a pair of headphones with a "b" on it, or something. got to replace the skullcandies. still want the natural wood headphones.
