xp I actually really liked that last Scooter tape, too, but the songs that pulled me out of it were the Gucci guest spots, where it was like, "oh yeah, here's how Scooter is supposed to be rapping"

Gucci + farm-system Gucci in-training is not a good look

Evan R, Saturday, 2 March 2013 02:32 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i got a lot of disagreement on the point when i brought it up before, but Scooter sounds distractingly too much like a Gucci disciple to me to really enjoy his stuff much

some dude, Saturday, 2 March 2013 02:46 (eleven years ago) link

haha apparently gucci is performing at a skating rink in baltimore tomorrow night

i still dont hear the resemblance being that strong re: gucci v scooter

scooter isn't on gucci's level in any way, but i dont think anyone ever claimed he was.

not 'resemblance' so much as, like, Scooter sounds like he's trying to write Gucci verses/hooks. it doesn't sound like he's listened to ANY other rappers, like that's his only influence.

Shuwopley (some dude), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 10:18 (eleven years ago) link

Right now I'm getting the impression that Gucci is following Scooter rather than the other way around.

Really like the low-key production on this one, and the 2 Chainz verse is excellent. Proof the guy can slay a verse without having to lean hard on his 2 Chainz persona

Evan R, Thursday, 7 March 2013 20:14 (eleven years ago) link

if only anybody wanted to discuss gucci & 2 chainz this thred'd be perfect

Uh oh, did I miss something in the Molly thread? I don't usually go in there.

Evan R, Friday, 8 March 2013 01:02 (eleven years ago) link

haha v tedious discussion on these 2 over the last few days

the verses on that track really are great though, it's refreshing to hear the more precise flow from gucci in particular. also i don't mind discussing it here since there's a lot of nastiness/white noise in the other thread atm

OK, an actual Gucci single from an actual commercial album:

Huge departure, and I think it's incredible.

Evan R, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 20:15 (eleven years ago) link

don't know if i love it but on a purely melodic level it's pretty great

some dude, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 22:09 (eleven years ago) link

this would instantly seem worse if it was "the debut single from Guwop," though, so happy that bullet was dodged

some dude, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 22:10 (eleven years ago) link

me too that was an awful idea

bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 22:12 (eleven years ago) link

changing it for a half hour and then caving was a great idea, though, so hilarious

some dude, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 22:15 (eleven years ago) link

i wish young dro did the same thing ugh "3krazy"??!

God, hadn't even thought about that, but the fervor over this would have been intense

Has any established rapper other than Tity 2 Necklace ever benefited from a name change?

radric: the guccining (The Reverend), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 06:34 (eleven years ago) link

I suppose there's the 500 hats of Bartholomew Combs, but they didn't really seem to alter his career for the worse or better.

radric: the guccining (The Reverend), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 06:35 (eleven years ago) link

hmmm, it occured to me Andre 3000 is the answer to this

only built 4 cuban twinx... (The Reverend), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 21:54 (eleven years ago) link

hmmm he was still putting his music out under the outkast name

i'm surprised whiney didn't say freddy foxxx/bumpy knuckles already.

sisilafami, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 22:12 (eleven years ago) link

Common?
Biggie?
Kendrick?

tsrobodo, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 22:39 (eleven years ago) link

hmmm he was still putting his music out under the outkast name

Andre 3000 is still a much more recognizable name than ultra-generic Dre tho and fed into his personal mythos. (On further reflection, I'd argue Puffy's name changes did the latter, too.)

Biggie and Kendrick were still new kids on the block. Bumpy Knuckles is a classic rap name but it's not like he gained that much by adopting it. Com's a good answer.

postponed :(

He actually has two tapes dropping today - Trap Back 2 and a collabo tape with Young Dolph.

longneck, Friday, 15 March 2013 14:30 (eleven years ago) link

who drops a mixtape on friday night at 10pm...

bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Friday, 15 March 2013 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

I think the last Young Thug tape came out around then, too. It's crap timing, because I would have liked to have ridden with it that Friday night but had to wait until sleepy Saturday. Plus it means there's no fun insta-Twitter reaction to follow.

Evan R, Friday, 15 March 2013 16:20 (eleven years ago) link

yeah insta-Twitter reactions are so fun and not completely tedious and unnecessary and depressing

îron swanson (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 15 March 2013 16:22 (eleven years ago) link

They can be all of those things, but I still like the shared experience of reacting to music, especially if it's from an artist I'm excited about

Evan R, Friday, 15 March 2013 16:34 (eleven years ago) link

yeah there's interesting things to be found in instareactions, no one's saying they have to be the final word on releases

bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Friday, 15 March 2013 16:37 (eleven years ago) link

I'm also more tolerant of instareactions to mixtapes, which almost by design are meant to have a shorter conversational shelf life than albums. It's one thing when writers casts immediate judgement on years-in-the-making JT or MBV records; another when they fire off opinions about a Young Scooter mixtape most people might never get around to hearing

Gucci Mane ‏@gucci1017
Waka flacka flames officially dropped off brick squad 1017. Big Guwop say give me a offer fa this disloyal lil nigga

"waka flacka flames"

tpp, Saturday, 16 March 2013 10:12 (eleven years ago) link

i feel guilty whenever i partake in twitter instareactions but really it's the only suitable place for them - communal excitement can be fun, à la old-skool ilm threads

i feel depressed and angry when i see professional album reviews that are pretty much instareactions. FIRST FIRST EVERYONE GOTTA BE FIRST WITH THEIR JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE OPINION

what was up with that though? are they 4real beefing?

k3vin k., Saturday, 16 March 2013 19:35 (eleven years ago) link

Anybody heard that Gucci/Young Dolph mixtape? Is it worth downloading?

Evan R, Monday, 18 March 2013 22:57 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah it is. It sounded a bit like a mess at first, but it's falling into place now.

longneck, Monday, 18 March 2013 23:09 (eleven years ago) link

So is it possible that Selena is the gal that has made Gucci sound so romantic and #based lately?

longneck, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 00:33 (eleven years ago) link

Are there any particular highlights from the last two mixtapes?

Walter Galt, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 11:00 (eleven years ago) link

Not a lot of highlights on Trap Back 2. It's his first disappointing mixtape in quite a while
