In that sense, Jinkx's transformation from comedy into potentially stunning runway queen is the true headline here.

i love her

open the blood gates (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 16:38 (eleven years ago) link

my six are:

Jinkx
Detox
Alaska
Alyssa
Coco
Roxxxy

I love Alyssa look, I love the way she carries herself and how graceful she is but she is missing a depth, not even comedy but just some kind of personality that makes her MORE than her look. I dunno, she doesn't quite feel like the complete package to me.

There is just something about Detox that I love. I like that she always just throws herself 100% into whatever's given to her, challenge wise. She doesn't always rise to the top but she seems to be in the moment. Jinkx is the same way.

Alyssa's too in her own head, I think is maybe where she falls flat? If she unclenched a little she'd be great. Same with Coco.

Roxxxy's all look and no substance. And she's getting really childish about her competition, the same way Coco is. I think they're both doomed to go in the next couple of weeks unless they stop looknig over their shoulder.

oh and Alaska's just cool. A little less finessed, but she's fun.

alaska jinkx and detox are my top 3, but i'm sorry to say that i'm a little underwhelmed by detox

open the blood gates (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 17:06 (eleven years ago) link

Further re: Jinkx one of those interviews talks about how her drag name comes from Eddie Monsoon of Absolutely Fabulous and that the conceptual goal is someone always intentionally just out of sync/behind the times. So yeah, total star.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 March 2013 17:13 (eleven years ago) link

There's no dynamic here anywhere near as compelling as Heathers vs. Boogers, though admittedly pageant vs. comedy seems like it will be a forever fertile field for flamewar (and Alaska puts that into great perspective).

Yeah, agreed on that. Season three built up to this kinda amazing kaleidoscope towards the end; I actually think the most dramatic moment was when Alexis and Yara ended up having to face off.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 March 2013 17:16 (eleven years ago) link

The weird thing is this season could definitely have that same sort of squaring off. RoLaskaTox was fixing to be that powderkeg of mean girls, but it disbanded before any real drama could start, and all of them look the better for it.

It's weird, but this season's presumed frontrunners (Detox, Jinkx, Alaska) are all a lot more magnanimous in their dominance than, for instance, Raja or Tyra ever were. And good on them, but it's just a shade boring in comparison. I really go for Raja's unfiltered confi-dominatrix persona.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 17:30 (eleven years ago) link

Really, I just treasure every moment RPDR gave me to spend time with Raja. *gush*

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 17:30 (eleven years ago) link

i was very happy to see alaska display a different look on the runway, i think she's got to start displaying more variety in her makeup & silhouettes in order to maintain the judges' interest because the big bouffant look was starting to get way too predictable

open the blood gates (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 17:32 (eleven years ago) link

i think raja's punk look for the music challenge in S3 was one of the best runway moments of RPDR, i still think about it

open the blood gates (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 17:33 (eleven years ago) link

Yes.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 18:07 (eleven years ago) link

You KNOW I'm going to poll that during the off-season.

you better!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 18:14 (eleven years ago) link

Oh my jesus, I forgot all about Raja's Carrie dress.

alternately mean and handsy (Eric H.), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 18:38 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah pretty much EVERY outfit Raja had:

1) confirmed why getting the crown was well deserved

2) insanely memorable

3) had SOMETHING out of left field

And yes as well to Raja sometimes coming out with those cutting/angry moments too -- I think that a lot of that came from her being older/more experienced/DGAF while following her own particular path earlier on in life. I half suspect Jinkx etc. would have that spark to them more clearly if they were in later on as well (Alaska definitely shows more flashes, especially now re:Detox/Roxxy). Where Coco, who IIRC is Raja's age at the time of season 3, seems in her career to have taken a way more conformist approach and is a little taken aback/does not get something that differs, thus the comedy slams. (See also Roxxy in the first episode being a little weirded out/confused by Jinkx and her eyepatch.)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 March 2013 18:44 (eleven years ago) link

jinkx has been in the top 3 for 6 consecutive challenges, don't think that's happened before

open the blood gates (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 19:13 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, there's a lot of tumblr chatter about Jinkx's fanbase playing the victim card a little too conspicuously, when in reality, she's absolutely killing it on accumulated points.

New episode tonight AND Julianne Escobedo Shepard interviewing Ru for Spin, with this little bit of interest:

Drag Race's fifth-season premiere scored more viewers that evening than CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight, and this season is the show's most-watched yet, marking a 33 percent increase in ratings for Logo as a network.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 1 April 2013 20:46 (eleven years ago) link

in fairness, everyone hates Piers Morgan

Too true...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 1 April 2013 21:36 (eleven years ago) link

So I was actually sad to see Miss Edwards go. She was such a character and in the end I think she had more to offer than Coco, Roxxxy, or Detox. And probably a nicer person too.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 03:21 (eleven years ago) link

Still if you're going to go, that's how to do it, because that was one crazy lip sync.

Annnnnd go Jinkx go!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 04:59 (eleven years ago) link

And next week making over Marines? Like Roxxy said in the ad, "God bless America."

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 05:06 (eleven years ago) link

Based on what we were shown, that lip-sync put the earlier one that gave both queens a chanté to shame. Coco had the rap down, and I understand why Alyssa had to leave this week given her ill-advised choice of words about coasting to the top on one LS4YL after another. But damn, that was not the way I wanted that rivalry to break.

I can only presume Coco's days are numbered, but the "dress up someone who doesn't normally do drag" episodes have a way of really blowing a cyclone through the presumed order of things.

After the last few Untucked episodes, I'm thinking Alaska might have Miss Congeniality wrapped up, unless Jinxx folds under pressure.

alternately mean and handsy (Eric H.), Tuesday, 2 April 2013 23:20 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah the next challenge should be interesting -- the only time Raja had to lipsync was with her equivalent episode.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 23:26 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, and Sharon also got sent to the bottom 2 on that challenge.

alternately mean and handsy (Eric H.), Tuesday, 2 April 2013 23:26 (eleven years ago) link

i want to see jinkx lip synch, not because i think she deserves to be in the bottom two ever, but because i'm certain she's so good at it

ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 15:16 (eleven years ago) link

She kind of did in that pseudo-gloryhole mini-challenge early on (she didn't win).

alternately mean and handsy (Eric H.), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 15:19 (eleven years ago) link

haha i'm obsessed, but there's some decent stuff on jinkx's YT channel, the medea diaries are pretty lol

xpost -- she also did in that one bit on the second Untucked where the lip-sync group challenge went down. Just because I remembered the amazing looks/performance she gave on "...relying on that BODYodyodyody..."*rolls eyes*

Whaddya know? Looks like Jinkx is about to fall on a big ol' grenade.

cacao nibs (Eric H.), Monday, 8 April 2013 12:34 (eleven years ago) link

with any luck that navy daddy paired with jinkx will be the most naturally campy queen of them all

ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Monday, 8 April 2013 12:53 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe, but at first blush, I think Alaska definitely picked the easy winner in that lineup.

cacao nibs (Eric H.), Monday, 8 April 2013 12:54 (eleven years ago) link

Ha, Jinkx got the best one out of the five if you ask me! Dude had stories.

Anyway Jinkx survives, SEEYA COCO.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 05:01 (eleven years ago) link

Promo for next week makes it seem like RuLaskaTox trying to drive Jinkx out...I have my doubts.

okay Alaska's Nebraska was cute premakeover but DAMN she is a fine queen. Crappy padding or no.

Detox's Retox oh hai hott. I could watch her walk in those heels all day long. The makeup kinda bummed me out though.

Coco's Horchata looked like a kabuki actor! So bad. Didnt think she lost the lipsync but who cares BUHBYEEEE

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 06:03 (eleven years ago) link

Nah, she lost. Detox's comment about having more fun on stage underscored why.
