yeah there is def some mid period Floyd influence there, but theres a lot more going on as well; "Comrade Voyager" sounds like a strange combination of Oneida, Hawkwind, and early 80s ABBA, at least until a minute from the end, when it switches gears and becomes a groovy Rick Wakeman Moog jam...

the dubious bros. (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 5 April 2013 16:17 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, definitely some interesting gear shifting going on with some of the songs, they tend to keep the tracks moving without it getting too proggy.

grandavis, Friday, 5 April 2013 16:21 (eleven years ago) link

Very intrigued, will have to check it out after lunch.

Awww man, track posted on Orcutt's site from the upcoming Orcutt/Corsano album. As soon as you hear Corsano come in you know it's just gonna take off, and boy does it (for me at least). Definitely excited for this record. By the way, it's Orcutt electric, at least on this song and I imagine the whole record, but who knows?

this is why i love bands like this! just when you think you know what you're getting, whoa there are some super loud repetitive chuggy guitars or whatever and then you forget how quiet things were just a few minutes ago. and it actually goes somewhere, doesn't just skillfully but aimlessly noodle. i like the first and second songs together for that reason. hell, i kinda forgot i liked this band, but as it turns out, i do and i did not know they had a new one.
i also like the cover.

This is definitely hitting the spot today. Opening guitar solo is really great imo:

Crap, thought some info would post. Above clip is Residual Echoes, which in this instance was the touring Colin L Orchestra band "as" Residual Echoes and vice versa.

Also really enjoying this Loren Connors & Thurston Moore set. Nice write-up in Dusted Magazine, and I agree with them that Thurston turns out to be a good foil for Loren's playing. Have checked out a few collabs of his and didn't find them that compelling (prefer Loren solo for the most part), but yeah, this is sounding great to me today:

I love the mmmr album from years back, will check this out!

supermassive pot hole (seandalai), Friday, 19 April 2013 14:36 (eleven years ago) link

I've never heard that mmmr record, looks interesting for sure. I like the duo format for improv, I think it can get into some really interesting territory, and I think Thurston and Loren here do a great job of taking advantage of the freedom whilst complementing each other at the same time.

grandavis, Friday, 19 April 2013 15:47 (eleven years ago) link

yeahhh, that connors/moore thing is tasty.

tylerw, Friday, 19 April 2013 17:08 (eleven years ago) link

Lots of reasons the Hopscotch Festival looks great this year, but I just learned that Merzbow is the "improviser in residence", which essentially means that he could show up at any gig and be onstage. Last year it was Chris Corsano. Great idea for a festival, really wish I could go.

dunno if this belongs here, but former ga'an vocalist is doing neat things with her voice here
http://fielded.bandcamp.com/album/white-death-7

or as my local paper put it without a hint of hyperbole

One listen to "White Death," the title track of her new seven-inch on Sophomore Lounge Records, ought to be enough for anyone with a working prefrontal cortex and the capacity to feel.

it's not particularly freaky imo but i don't know where else to put minimalist vocal music.

I think we've been talking about Shooting Guns in the stoner rock thread too so might be worth a crosspost.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 7 June 2013 20:45 (ten years ago) link

Both threads happily bleed over a lot, I think!

i will totally give you a fuck yeah for new mmb. "circular ruins" is fucking amazing. also, purson's debut, the circle and the blue door, holy shit! like mellow candle jamming with steeleye span, in the most righteous possible way

Don't even know if this belongs here or in Rolling Noise, but Rabih Beaini did this pretty weird, lo-fi droney "folk"/"psych"/"jazz" album:

https://soundcloud.com/rabih/sets/rabih-beaini-albidaya-preview

Normally he does techno as Morphosis or R.aH, so this was kind of out of nowhere.

super psyched for Ensemble Pearl -- Atsuo, William Herzog, Michio Kurihara and Stephen O'Malley, out in March.

― tylerw, Friday, 4 January 2013 17:45 (5 months ago) Bookmark

Ensemble Pearl is excellent. I have not become as obsessed with a psych/drone type album since Psychic Paramount II.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Sunday, 9 June 2013 14:22 (ten years ago) link

Really? I'll have to listen again. I was super excited for this because I like all of those guys, but I just found myself wanting to listen to Miles every time I played it (ditto that latest Fontanelle album). It left zero impression on me the two times I listened, but I'm planning a third attempt.

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Sunday, 9 June 2013 15:34 (ten years ago) link

I would recommend full volume or headphones to take in it's awesome intricacies. I am not familiar with the artists involved apart from eyvind kang who is on Wray, so I guess it is something a bit different and new for me.

Just watched Oneida playing with Rhys Chatham at ATP - fucking astounding. And chatting to them afterwards I was made up to hear that they've recorded together and this will be coming out next year.

And I'd implore anyone to spend more time with (Ensemble Pearl). It took ages to click with me but now it's a top three of the year style deal. Your man from Ghost is such a pleasure to listen to on guitar. That his solo drone track is just done on guitar and tape delay is amazing I reckon.

Doran, Saturday, 22 June 2013 18:33 (ten years ago) link

Shooting Guns from Saskatoon? Interesting. I missed seeing them during the Junos. I was a little on the fence about some of their earlier material but it certainly had potential. I'll give this a try.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 22 June 2013 18:41 (ten years ago) link

The Ensemble Pearl album is four dark dirges and two very delicate pieces. I can't explain what is special about it, but it is.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Saturday, 22 June 2013 19:59 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, you guys are right. This Shooting Guns is enjoyable boozy sludge.

1:40 – 2:10 - Magik Markers (improv set)
2:30 – 3:10 – Glenn Jones (only show of fest)
3:30 – 4:10 – Desert Heat ( Steve Gunn / Cian Nugent / John Truscinski /Jason Meagher – North American debut – only show of fest)
4:30 – 5:15 – Thurston Moore / John Moloney Caught on Tape Duo (only show of fest)
- live between-set music from Mike Gangloff and Nathaniel Bowles (both of Pelt, Black Twig Pickers and solo fame)

Tom carter just freaking killed it, for lack of a better term, and Gangloff and Bowles are droning it up before the Magik Markers do a full improv set (up next). Great sound quality on the stream too.

Saw Residual Echoes in Charlottesville recently, and man it really cooked. Hadn't been 100% sold on recorded stuff I've heard, songs didn't fully connect with me, but this set was full on great, the songs were cool and the instrumental parts/jams were pretty focussed and definitely rocking. Some real highs. Here's the same line-up in Europe, where they are on tour right now:

that tonal shrine thing is cool -- the comets on fire dude's label is doing some very nice stuff relevant to this thread - http://www.silvercurrentrecords.com

Yeah, I am going to go down that Silver Current rabbit hole at some point, but not quite yet.

I love that Pelt Part Wild Gate recording, hope I can get a copy of it at some point. It's gonna sell out for sure.

grandavis, Wednesday, 13 November 2013 17:28 (ten years ago) link

yeah i haven't dug too much into the silver current stuff, but i really like the idea of it -- more bands should do stuff like that, limited runs of radio sessions, live "bootlegs" etc.

tylerw, Wednesday, 13 November 2013 17:32 (ten years ago) link

Yeah man, live is where it is at for so many bands/musicians (for many of the ones I love at least). When their best live sets get documented it is really exciting.

grandavis, Wednesday, 13 November 2013 17:39 (ten years ago) link

Three Lobed just posted this as a way to announce that physical copies were almost sold out, and I am listening for the first time. A couple tracks in and I am resoundingly digging it: Tom Carter & Bardo Pond jamming circa 2003:

http://threelobed.bandcamp.com/album/4-23-03

They recorded it at the Bardo space, not live, so it is a clear studio recording.
