"My Songs" sounds like it sampled Britney. Sooo many hoox on this album.

calling "rat a tat" as the ultimate set of wentz lyrics

no emo lyrics have ever really reached the heights of deja entendu
― Mordy, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 01:49 (eleven years ago) link
i wonder how many times hearts have beaten in reverse in his discography

Just interviewed Messrs Stump and Wentz for a podcast. Not a band I've ever taken much notice of, but genuinely delightful interviewees.
― Trans-Europe Stopping Train (ithappens), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 11:01 (eleven years ago) link
i think the biggest roadblock for me w/ this record is how much i loved Stump's solo album and his lyric writing...
man, i wish i had your problems. i tried so damn hard with stump solo, really i did. wanted to love it, but could barely manage grudging respect. glad to see FOB back together.
― I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 11:23 (eleven years ago) link
there are ways in which the instrumentation/production doesn't remotely measure up to the band's, but as a showcase for his songwriting/vocals i thought it was pretty stellar.

man almost none of those records conform to the "sent musicians back to their main bands" narrative
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:42 (eleven years ago) link
xxp, yeah that's fair. the production and arrangements sabotage what could (and should) have been a much better album.

i am generally down with time jam
― I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 15:21 (eleven years ago) link
ahaha i was just sort of reacting to the idea that the production and arrangements sabotage soul punk bc i love that production, those arrangements, so prince
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 16:16 (eleven years ago) link
yeah i like how the album is musically very Prince and vocally very MJ.
― some dude, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 16:31 (eleven years ago) link
They told me this album was much more stripped down and simple than they had originally intended. I said that if this was what stripped back sounded like, God only knows what over the top would have sounded like. They said: like white noise.
― Trans-Europe Stopping Train (ithappens), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 16:34 (eleven years ago) link
i mean there is a leanness to it. "my songs" for instance feels like it has very few elements
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 16:36 (eleven years ago) link
My god this album.
― Tim F, Thursday, 11 April 2013 22:16 (eleven years ago) link
It's like the rock version of the Carly Rae Jepsen album.

Actually I've been so intensely reminded of my love of both bands this week that I suddenly feel inspired to hear all the emo-crossover I never checked out before (Say Anything etc.)
― Tim F, Thursday, 11 April 2013 22:27 (eleven years ago) link
oh man Say Anything Is A Real Boy is still my fav major label emo album of them all
― some dude, Thursday, 11 April 2013 22:28 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah that's top of my list.

Haha I just cross-referenced all the emo albums that ended up on the people's lists of people I trust.

didn't think "My Songs" would have any traction at all on pop radio, but it's now their biggest hit on the Pop Songs chart since "Thnks fr th Mmrs"
― some dude, Friday, 12 April 2013 03:14 (eleven years ago) link
this record sounds super great on big speakers
― maura, Friday, 12 April 2013 05:39 (eleven years ago) link
The day FOB dropped the album stream, I listened to it about three times consecutively during work. And later, almost home, the cars were jammed trying to exit my subway stop parking lot. And my auto is non-mobile for for minutes, like, this really sucks.. but suddenly the local pop radio station here segued their rush-hour dance party into "My Songs," and it was the best moment ever. We were all so stuck in this new summer heat, and I rolled my windows down and turned it way up--the moment in the video where everyone says fk it and leaves their cars to party with it...
Despite the radio broadcast it did sound great out of the car speakers. I have so much love for this album already. I love all of the hopeless prose, there are some great lines on this one.

is a real boy is the besssst, and though they've never equaled it in defense of the genre is at least a fun mess. their last record kinda sucked.

Happy for ILM to take me by the hand and lead me into the light on this issue.
― Tim F, Friday, 12 April 2013 15:17 (eleven years ago) link
i think "alive with the glory of love" is possibly the greatest emo song ever recorded but i don't the rest of the album quite matches up
― Mordy, Friday, 12 April 2013 15:18 (eleven years ago) link
that song
yes
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 12 April 2013 15:21 (eleven years ago) link
okay yeah but the rest of the album nearly matches up
"spidersong" and "every man has a molly" and "yellow cat/red cat" which is incidentally an incredible slow burn

Do I need to be checking out Brand New and Saves The Day also
― Tim F, Friday, 12 April 2013 15:38 (eleven years ago) link
duh
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 12 April 2013 15:39 (eleven years ago) link
Best Saves the Day albums are Through Being Cool and Stay What You Are, imo.
― how's life, Friday, 12 April 2013 15:44 (eleven years ago) link
idk actually bc neither brand new or saves the day "crossover" exactly. like, brand new is pretty uniformly grim, and saves the day are amazing but extremely entrenched in pop-punk and emo traditions until in reverie where they decide to sound like weezer (and it's their best record imo but i'm alone in that)
one thing i'd recommend actually is taking back sunday's louder now, which wouldn't be on a lot of Best Emo Crossover lists but is a crucial record in that it creates a lot of the space that infinity on high would expand on the next year. this may be a false narrative but it's kind of how i experienced it
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 12 April 2013 16:16 (eleven years ago) link
like, produced by eric valentine, sounds like a million bucks, released within the time "sugar we're going down" and "i write sings not tragedies" became massive on radio
