I don't have an issue with getting a kid a BB gun; an actual gun seems insane to me, especially for a 5-year-old

Coroner Mr White later admitted the incident would be ruled as an accident, saying: "It’s just one of those crazy accidents.”

Just one of those crazy accidents that happens when you give firearms to a child and leave them lying around loaded and unsupervised! It's practically unpreventable!

We should definitely not examine the political or social underpinnings of this horrendous tragedy for this family, now that their 2-yo child has paid for their poor judgment like a sin-eater who bears the full punishment of others and is cast out.

“It’s a Crickett,” the coroner explained. “It’s a little rifle for a kid… The little boy’s used to shooting the little gun.”

Oh well, that's fine then

Via Gawker:

A school district in Oregon is catching some flak after it recently sicced two masked gunmen loaded with blank on a meeting room full of teachers as part of a surprise "readiness drill" for an active shooter scenario.

The two men burst into the meeting room at Pine Eagle Charter School in Halfway last Friday and opened fire on the teachers within.

After several long moments, the terrorized teachers realized the shooting was staged since they weren't, well, being shot to death.

The Oregonian reports that the school's staff had received training on what to do in case of an active shooting event from the Union County Sheriff's Office, and the district picked an in-service day during which students stayed at home in order to conduct the unannounced drill.

After the initial shock wore off, some of the teachers arrived at the realization that they would not have survived had this been a real-life school shooting.

Asked how many of the fifteen teachers would have made it out alive, Principal Cammie DeCastro responded, "not many."

She blew off critics who expressed concern for the possibility that some of the teachers could have been literally scared to death, or worse, could have been carrying a concealed weapon of their own and moved to respond in kind.

In fact, the latter may be an outcome of the failed drill as the district's Safety Committee and the School Board consider arming teachers or bringing in armed volunteers to watch over the children.

"For us not to know how we were going to respond is leaving us open," DeCastro said.

ftr, the town of Halfway, Oregon is an extremely isolated ranching community and I am certain that more than half the adult population would own guns and hunting licenses, because that's an area where bagging your elk is what puts meat in the freezer for winter.

Aimless, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 18:38 (ten years ago) link

Probably all the more reason not to pull a stunt like that.

true dat, but the combo of media-saturation reporting of violent events and incessant nra propaganda has planted some fixed ideas in many rural folks who ought to know better.

Thank you for supporting the next generation of recreational shooters. My 4 1/2 year old daughter thought the "pink one" was far superior to a black synthetic stock, who am i to argue? I never would have thought that a pink rifle would be sitting in the rack in the gun room. I look forward to when my daughter is a bit older and ready to begin her journey in the great sport of shooting.

brimstead, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 19:04 (ten years ago) link

the next generation of recreational shooters

I'm fine with recreational shooters in general. I do think it is highly presumptuous of them to believe that the Second Amendment was placed into the foundational laws of our nation in order to elevate "recreational shooting" to the level of a sacred right.

The great thing about a hidden truth is that, by definition, you won't know what it is, so that no one can disprove it.
