The new one is pretty good. Some weird production choices, though. I think altogether I like her first album better.

Cosign with MW - I'm not sure this is the direction I wanted to see her go, but given the debut was my favorite album of 2011, I'm willing to go for the ride.

"drop the other" was one of my favourite singles from the last decade

Melissa, you've heard the new record already?

I loved her debut too - for me, it was second only to Planningtorock that year.

This video for the Brandt Brauer Frick version of "Pretend" is quite something:

I have heard it, yes! It's good stuff if a bit overly long. It would be better if a few of the songs were cut.

i don't know, the sound design on this isn't working for me, seems a little boring compared to her last record? i haven't spent much time with it though, or even gotten through the whole thing yet (15 tracks!).

listened to the first album a lot

almost have seen her live, but it hasn't really worked out

Sanpaku, was that the link you were meaning to paste?

Is there anything on the new album that sounds anything like Chemical Fever? I got the impression that it was a one-off but I'd like more.

mh, Tuesday, 30 April 2013 21:01 (ten years ago) link

Nothing particularly like Chemical Fever, sadly.

one month passes...

think i'm feeling this a lot more than the debut, on reflection - certainly keeps me coming back to it more. love the strings and soprano touches and she really has a knack for dropping really heavy bass at the right times

ta for the nudge lex, just refound this in the archive, knew i had it somewhere
- for some reason its not listed in the albums listings.

damn : 'sing to me' is a genuine shiver up spine track for me.

finally listened to this - really gorgeous-sounding record. I think moving her vocals upfront makes it significantly less menacing than the debut, but her sound design remains flawless. sounds amazing on headphones.

suffers a bit from wanting to be pop but being not-quite-pop enough though.

mh (xp by 2 months) I was just posting my 2011 album poll ballot.

My fave on Dva remains "Sing to Me", which also happens to be the one most similar to past work.

Have you noticed the biggest fan of Emika on twitter, and maybe in North America, is Hank Shocklee?

"Flashbacks" just popped up on my ILM single noms shuffle play, and really reminded me of c. 1990 Mylène Farmer. Which is cool, since I listened to L'Autre just the other day and thought maybe I should search out more of that aesthetics.
