So Tyler Perry is gay, right?

When I was a kid, church felt like a Tyler Perry stage play. There was some really good singing bracketed by pious repetition. Church always seemed like a re-run I was trapped in. They told me the same thing every week. The same woman got the Holy Spirit every single week. The same gossipy, hat wearing nosy bitches violated Matthew 7:1. The deacons passed around the collection plate and the preacher’s wardrobe got fancier and his garage got fuller. They gave us grape juice and matzoh and said it was de Lawd.

I'm only halfway through this exchange but it is GOOD.

So, is it that white crits are hesitant to make deeper criticisms of TP movies because it could be construed as a criticism of black culture?

Maybe lack of a backlash to being able to describe Tyler Perry as a shitty actor in Alex Cross was the first crack in the dam.

proud to say i've been creeped out by t. perry's vacant eyes and half-smile for years.

the dvd trailer for Good Deeds features the same shot of him half-smiling at a restaurant table twice

he's so bad in alex cross but honestly i wish every director who likes to think he's an actor was forced to play the lead in a generic action cop movie - i would see every one

even the Tarantino one

also would hit the opening night pre-sale for smith and shyamalan

though assuming the movies in question are helmed by action hacks, not the directors starring

SPOILER at the end of Cross, he's seated watching a skype of Jean Reno being arrested in some unnamed Latin American country, and he says something to the screen (even though Reno has dropped his phone pre-handcuffs) like "you have taken a life and now I have destroyed yours." Honestly, I don't know how any actor could pull that off. Also calls someone a "maggot" twice.

at first I was excited that Craig Robinson had gotten his own movie made. and then I saw Tyler Perry's name and I was not excited anymore. should I be ashamed.

apparently Perry only contributed money and had nothing to do with the script or direction

as such, it seems to be a much more benign vehicle than the avg Tyler Perry movie

im thinking about seeing it, written/directed by the writer of my beloved Drumline

I read the AV Club review this morning which basically said "this is a harmless, formulaic comedy, which by default makes it far and away the best movie ever made attached to Tyler Perry's name"
