that it was originally a freestyle track makes total sense tho

totally. feel like around the time of these comps was kinda the last breath commercially for freestyle for many yrs which was too bad but is interesting in retrospect.

oh shit, I guess Corina co-wrote the song in the first place so maybe not really a cover after all.

my copy of corina's "summertime summertime" promo single (i tracked it down b/c i wanted a good-quality version of the radio edit lol) sez the original song was written by nocera and floyd fisher, and that corina wrote the spoken-word part at the beginning of her version (she also wrote the lyrics to her spanish version "es verano")

exposing myself as a dilettante here but idk who mantronik is :X

i heard a sample of some vocal ad libs from "swing my way" (pitched up) last night on the radio and was offended when i discovered it had been done on bryson tiller's boring music

dyl, Thursday, 31 December 2015 18:54 (eight years ago) link

eight months pass...

and now here we are with a song using the same sample, but pitched/slowed down. plus an interpolation of the chorus

once a year or so i'll randomly hear it out somewhere, which is always a pleasant surprise. not a super well known song by any means but something of a classic among those who know it, i guess

where have these been all my life?!?

one year passes...

To this day, it still puzzles me how So So Def got a hold of Corina's "summertime summertime." Since Albert Cabrera produced that track along with her other track "constant craving," which was featured on the Dance Trip 2000 compilation, which also contains quite a bit of similar sounding songs he produced, I figured the original version of "Summertime Summertime" should have also been on that compilation. It is pretty much the same exact production sound as "only love" by Brenda K Starr and "Runaway" by Lil Suzy. I figured the Spanish and spanglish versions of "summertime summertime" would also end up on some Latin Booty Bass compilations, but none ever did. Summertime Summertime was supposed to be So So Def's follow up to "My Boo," but it seems that that song wasn't as successful as "My boo" overall for a variety of reasons I won't get into here.

I also wonder why Inoj didn't have any songs on Dance Trip 2000, as I see her as someone who would have perfectly fit that sound as well. Virgo could have made a song on Dance Trip 2000 as well, especially under the "Virgo" name. Not sure why that name wasn't also used when she sang "My boo"....

Nowadays, it seems that "My boo" is the song that had the biggest success, although, most will never know Virgo's name due to the "Ghost town DJs" name being used for that particular track.

Inoj, I would say comes in second place when it comes to overall success since she had more than one song from her first album receive sufficient radio support in the US and overseas. Inoj had four releases from her first album, with two ("time after time" and "love you down") that had done very well in the US. In addition, there are two versions of "ring my bell" I heard play while in Phoenix, Arizona, between 1999 and 2009, during radio mixshow play on 2 stations (a video was made for the regular version, so I assume it was meant to be her third official single). The fourth release, "all I want," I never heard it play in the US, but it did play in the Philippines in a Magic 89.9 mixshow along with "My boo," and "do you miss me" (freefloor remix) by Jocelyn Enriquez. That was in December 2019. A year before that I saw one or two females in the Philippines putting "Inoj" as one of their favorite artists in theit Tinder profile, and the woman I dated there also loves the song "all I want" by Inoj (in addition to her two other main singles that made it big there).

Inoj still continues to make new bass music nowadays, but Lil Jon is no longer the producer of her songs.

Lil Jon himself has done an amazing job with not only production work on Inoj's album, but pretty much on ever bass remix of all the hit RnB songs he has remixed. Many of those bass remixes still occasionally get played in Atlanta, although, I do not hear the Planet Patrol ft Jazze Pha "Play at your own risk" remix by Lil Jon anywhere anymore (not including my radio station).

I occasionally mix some old school bass, electro breaks and freestyle. However, I focus mainly on the new school (current) Miami Bass, Booty Bass, Electro Breaks and Freestyle music of today.

Dj Uneek ft Gemini - Doctor doctor (party mix);

Tamia ft Ludacris - imagination (Lil Jon Bass Mix);

Liberty City - 24/7 (Dj Felony Bass Mix);

Usher ft Twista - Nice & Slow (Atlanta Bass Mix);

Carl Mo ft Babydoll - Don't wanna lose your love

Booty Girlz - Freak me (let me lick you up and down);

Virgo - slick Patna;

Corina - Summertime Summertime* ;

Brenda K Starr - Only Love* ;

Janelle Monae - Time will reveal;

Mc Shy D ft Pop - Shake for me;

S.F. Spanish Fly - Tender Love;

IMX - My first time (booty mix)

Nashay - Loving you (Mike D Remix);

Brian McKnight - Back at one (Cibola Bass Mix)

Mo Thugs Family - It's all good;

Stefanie Bennett - Ooh la la la (Jersey Bass Mix)

Divine - Lately (Cibola Mix)

> Those are mainly the uptempo R&B styled vocal bass songs in english with little to no rap that immediately come to mind. //

> I did not include the newer stuff (like "Visible" by Doc Nasty or "Always be my X" by Inoj, etc.) and I did not include my favorite electro-freestyle songs, as that is an entirely different list.
