lengthens my commute by about 30 seconds

Pope Rusty I (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:31 (eleven years ago) link

i wonder how often they need to print out and update subway maps, and how much work it takes

hoda nkotb (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:32 (eleven years ago) link

less than once a year, a decent amount of work but I don't think this was ever modified on the map

iatee, Thursday, 25 April 2013 23:26 (eleven years ago) link

absolutely not, anything closed < 4 years is considered open.

Pope Rusty I (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 25 April 2013 23:44 (eleven years ago) link

E train. Ugh.

Blue Yodel No. 9 Dream (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 13:24 (eleven years ago) link

what's up with the E train? Mine was fine this morning.

huun huurt 2 (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 14:17 (eleven years ago) link

What time were you on it? I got on it later than I'd like to around 8 and it was really slow, let the M train go first at Queens Plaza -I hate it when that happens!- and it finally crawled to W4 where it just stopped and they told us to take the A which of course was packed. Walked over to Houston and 7 and took the 1 instead.

Blue Yodel No. 9 Dream (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 14:42 (eleven years ago) link

I caught it around 9:10. Actually ran faster than usual. It's a nice train when it runs smooth on those long straightaways between stops. But yeah most mornings I have at least slight delays -- waiting for the M to leave, too close behind the F, etc.

huun huurt 2 (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 14:56 (eleven years ago) link

Ah so you finessed it by going in on the late side. One think I miss about my one month going to Kew Gardens is the reverse commute.

http://www.capitalnewyork.com/article/politics/2013/05/8529572/report-g-train-outshines-reputation-l-train-disappoints-hurricane-s

The F train, however, had the most delays overall, totalling a whopping 225 in 2012.

that's it, i'm walking to grand street from now on

乒乓, Monday, 27 May 2013 18:57 (ten years ago) link

the 6

iatee, Monday, 27 May 2013 19:01 (ten years ago) link

thought this bump would be citibike related

iatee, Monday, 27 May 2013 19:02 (ten years ago) link

i have a lot of opinions about citibike.

1st opinion: tourists unused to biking in the city + nyc drivers = stupidest
2nd opinion: lol at yuppies who don't want the bikes near them
3rd opinion: how come u can't rent a helmet? isn't wearing a helmet the law?
4th opinion: drunk people gonna pee all over these things

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Monday, 27 May 2013 19:25 (ten years ago) link

renting helmets would be kinda gross but otm, ppl should really be wearing helmets all the time

siouxsan sarandon (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 27 May 2013 19:30 (ten years ago) link

helmets w/ liners? idk

siouxsan sarandon (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 27 May 2013 19:30 (ten years ago) link

drunk people never seemed to pee on the bikes in the paris bikeshare program and paris has a long and proud culture of drunk people peeing on basically everything

iatee, Monday, 27 May 2013 19:33 (ten years ago) link

one time I saw someone peeing into the subway tracks at a crowded station during rushhour

iatee, Monday, 27 May 2013 19:34 (ten years ago) link

wearing a helmet generally only the law for kids

iatee, Monday, 27 May 2013 19:35 (ten years ago) link

1 - yeah, the city needs to beef up the infrastructure so biking is safe and the rules are clear as opposed to throwing people into the deathsport that is NYC traffic. lack of coordination of this with city planning is obvious. plus 1000 bucks if the bike gets stolen or destroyed? big learning curve there.
2 - well 1 kinda explains 2
3 - 4 kinda explains 3
4 - yes. yes they are.

klaus dingeldore's rhinelander monkey keeper father (forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 May 2013 19:35 (ten years ago) link

i don't think they'll pee on them while they're biking, i think they'll pee on them when they're stationed. as will dogs. They're gonna get grimy fast.

klaus dingeldore's rhinelander monkey keeper father (forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 May 2013 19:36 (ten years ago) link

nah it'll be fine

iatee, Monday, 27 May 2013 19:38 (ten years ago) link

street peeing is actually more common in places that aren't manhattan because it's easier to get away with

iatee, Monday, 27 May 2013 19:38 (ten years ago) link

there are a lot of these bikes in brooklyn too! where ppl will pee all over them!

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Monday, 27 May 2013 19:47 (ten years ago) link

i can also see your run-of-the-mill juvenile delinquents having fun slashing tires, stealing seats etc. i haven't looked up close at the bikes so i dunno how protected they are against stuff like that. i imagine the ingenuity of youthful enthusiasm will be able to overcome most obstacles.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Monday, 27 May 2013 19:59 (ten years ago) link

stuff happens but these things are built like tanks

iatee, Monday, 27 May 2013 20:02 (ten years ago) link

this raises an important point -- nice as public bike racks are, how much better would public toilets be!?

stefon taylor swiftboat (s.clover), Monday, 27 May 2013 20:16 (ten years ago) link

paris also has public toilets and that experiment has been less successful I think

iatee, Monday, 27 May 2013 20:17 (ten years ago) link

we have public toilets in nyc, they are called "mcdonalds"

klaus dingeldore's rhinelander monkey keeper father (forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 May 2013 20:20 (ten years ago) link

also "starbucks"

klaus dingeldore's rhinelander monkey keeper father (forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 May 2013 20:20 (ten years ago) link

yep

iatee, Monday, 27 May 2013 20:21 (ten years ago) link

I posted upthread at some point about the 3 pedestrian deaths in the past year on my block (Borinquen Place leading up to the Williamsburg Bridge).

This week they started work on the creation of a permanent center island and plaza thingy and other permanent obstructions to address the situation. I'm glad to see it.

The timing of the R thing is weird for me because I've just taken it twice recently for random things, after never using it at all. Uh...oh well, I guess?

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Wednesday, 5 June 2013 15:39 (ten years ago) link

will never not lol @ "Borinquen"; it sounds like shade a Jamaican lady would throw at a drag queen

Oh is that what happened?? I had the longest wait for an A and when it finally came it was running local and they never explained.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Monday, 8 July 2013 23:29 (ten years ago) link

Uptown E train taking forever because of police investigation at Fifth Avenue.

Pastel City Slang (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 8 July 2013 23:54 (ten years ago) link

乒乓, Monday, 8 July 2013 23:59 (ten years ago) link

Yup the effed A train is why I took a Z to gates and hoofed it from there. Now I have more dry cleaning to do.
