What did they do with the mix of "Voodoo Acid"? You can hardly hear the screaming and carrying on.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 14 October 2004 23:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I need to buy head-phones.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 14 October 2004 23:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh wait here we go, maybe the old version was edited down a bit. [Well, there are definitely new things here and maybe some old things missing, but it's working out okay.]

So anyway there's a generic PTV beginning at the start of the CD, with one of those JFK samples. Then you get the actual dedication, followed by "Beltane," which is mostly (surprisingly good) "tribal" sounding drumming, with some synthesizer sputterings.

"Beltane/Your Body/Twisted/Only Human" along with "Voodoo Acid" are the main reasons to want this, so far. Weird though even on "Depraved," this guitar solo is very classic rock, and if Genesis would shut up on this one it would be better. But on those first four songs, there are interesting musical things going on, perhaps entirely irrelevant to Genesis, but even he carries his own weight more than he usually does.

(Oh please, Genesis, no. This part didn't need to be added in.)
(Also left off a song I like with some very good cheesy LSD sounds.)

does that make you want to touch yourself? (nordicskilla), Thursday, 7 April 2005 16:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I just picked up Wreckers of Civilization (despite the weighty price tag). Couldn't resist.

Ummmmmm.......wow.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:28 (nineteen years ago) link

he actually looks like a chick i know.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:35 (nineteen years ago) link

He looks disquietingly like a friend of mine's Mom.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:45 (nineteen years ago) link

His posture there seems very deliberate.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:01 (nineteen years ago) link

the chick that i know who looks like that thinks that she is REALLY HAWT. no kidding.

she isn't that hot. nor is her personality all that great, either.

three weeks pass...
So, I finally tracked down a copy of Force the Hand of Chance by PTV, and I have to say that Chaki (on another thread) was right -- it really isn't my cup of tea. As much as I love TG and COIL, Force the Hand... really doesn't do much for me. I suppose I was hoping for something a bit more aggressive. While I can empathize with Gen's sentiments on "Just Drifting (For Caresse)" (basically a lovesong to his newborn daughter), I find the song intensely awful. It improves from there, but not by leaps and bounds. I don't regret picking it up, but I was really hoping for something else. Is the rest of their material comparable?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 April 2005 19:58 (eighteen years ago) link

What else have you heard, Alex? Not even "Godstar"?

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 28 April 2005 20:14 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm usenditing some stuff to you (things I think are actually kind of good).

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 28 April 2005 20:19 (eighteen years ago) link

The funny/sad thing is how far my Psychic TV "favorites" have been pared down to practically nothing, almost all of which is offered with apologies. What was wrong with me in my mid-20s?

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 28 April 2005 20:21 (eighteen years ago) link

"Twisted/Only Human" (from Live in Astora.)

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 28 April 2005 20:27 (eighteen years ago) link

"Elipse ov Flowers" nice overly Velvet Underground instrumental. (Xylophones? That's a nice touch.)

Thank you HTML syntax checker.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 28 April 2005 20:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't think I can access those, RS.

I honestly haven't heard "Godstar" (though people have told me that's one worth searching for). I came quite close to picking up Live in Thee East Village at the same time I found Force the Hand..., but figured I should start with the one before I go on some sort've spree.

Each successive COIL disc i've managed to put my hand to, meanwhile, has been better than the last. That's probably why I was let down by PTV (I was hoping for a similarly revelatory experience). It's so rare nowadays for me to discover an artist with a huge back cataglog that I hand't appreciated before. Both COIL and PTV have more releases that you can shake a stick at, it seems.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 April 2005 20:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh. Why wouldn't they work? Is it a work account. I emailed you directly (thru yousendit) so if I messed up the links above, you should still be able to get it that way (unless there's some technical thing I don't know about).

I haven't heard that much Coil, but I can definitely believe their output is superior to Psychic TV's (and even good). Kind of distant from where my taste has drifted, but I'd still like to hear more Coil eventually. The only one I have is Love's Secret Domain, which I mostly like, though not the vocals as much as everything else.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh. Why wouldn't they work?

I get this message: Your file has expired.
Unfortunately your file has expired. A link is valid for 7 days or 25 downloads, whichever occurs first. Once the link expires, the file is automatically deleted and cannot be recovered.

On Love's Secret Domain (which I don't, as yet, own), I've only really heard the title track (by way of a cassette-only Wax Trax sampler at the dawn of the 90's). I have Scatology, Horse Rotorvator (which I picked up on the strength of the raves of "scariest album ever" on ILM) and Unnatural History II (which features the infamous Hellraiser tracks....originally intended to serve as the film's score, but turned down as they were "too scary"). I've downloaded stuff from here and there. Their official website, Threshold House, promises to stock more of their stuff soon, but you can download snippets of their music on this site: http://www.brainwashed.com/coil/

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:06 (eighteen years ago) link

I just sent it today when I saw your posts. Weird.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually, I like the cassette version of Love's Secret Domain a little better than the CD, but maybe because I got used to that first. (It's shorter, the track order is different, and I think I remember that there are some changes in what some of the tracks sound like.)

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Cheers for the Mp3's, RS! I'll give them a proper spin and report back. Thanky!!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Love's Secret Domain is classic, but don't expect the rest of it to really compare to the drama of the title track.. I just realized the other day that a friend and I have been quoting the spoken word off "Things Happen" at each other for a DECADE now.

"Baby, do you have a light? What's it like in Ohio?"

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:14 (eighteen years ago) link

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Got all four of'em, RS, yes. Thanks again! I'm at the office at the mo', so I cannot listen to them just yet, but will do later this evening and post my reactions.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:34 (eighteen years ago) link

i am slowly working my way through some of the hoarier stretches of back catalogue of andrew weatherall label affiliates.

i know weatherall released on p-orridge track under the name PT001 on a sabres of paradise compilation.

now i run across this on nina walsh's sabrettes label.

http://music.hyperreal.org/flightpath/label/sabrettes/images/sr025.jpg

this is sabrettes 025 : POD's "gestator EP". there is another EP by POD, called "PODville", and a few tracks compiled on a sabrettes compilation ("mollusk" and "geodesic")

discogs.com claims this POD is kenny larkin, but i am like "uhuhnoway" because the whole deal is absolutely undetroitish, totally british in attitude.

so my question is: is anybody familiar enough with genesis' pierced cock to make a positive ID based on that label?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I just lost my appetite.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:01 (eighteen years ago) link

also i am kinda feeling the dj doktor megatrip material and kooky scientist (fred gianelli) is obv great. so is this acid tekno beat release recommended?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:02 (eighteen years ago) link

i thought you were made of sterner stuff, alex

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:03 (eighteen years ago) link

Hahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:05 (eighteen years ago) link

vahid, how about if I just send you my CD copy? (Seriously. I will mail this to you, if you send me an address.) I don't think Fred Gianelli had anything to do with it though. I don't think he'd even hooked up with Psychic TV at that point.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:08 (eighteen years ago) link

(Mine is a Wax Trax twofer)

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:15 (eighteen years ago) link

hahaha it's that good?? BTW at first i was sort of surprised to see you were a TG fan, but on 2nd thought, i guess i'm not.

not liking TG = not liking life.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:27 (eighteen years ago) link

It doesn't really make much sense, and I'm not much of a fan anymore. I'm more of an x-fan (definitely more of an X-fan when it comes to PTV).

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:29 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, your equation is crazy! But they have their moments.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Anyway, vahid, there's almost know acid house or techno that I like (including solo Fred) so just because I don't like this doesn't mean you won't either. Although a lot of acid house and techno fans hate it.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Listening now....

"Godstar" -- surprisingly hooky and poppy. Genesis will never win any awards for his/her vocals. Interesting, but not life chaning.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:48 (eighteen years ago) link

"Just Like Arcadia" goes together fairly well with that one.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:51 (eighteen years ago) link

"Twisted" -- Much more like it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Enjoying "Just Like Arcadia".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:54 (eighteen years ago) link

I just realized tonight it's got one riff (rifflet?) or whatever that sounds a little like "Tainted Love."

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm pretty sure the text in "Moonchilde" is just the little manifesto you have at the end of "Force Thee Hand of Chance" translated into Catalan.

So does anyone else wish that Fred Gianelli would spend more time playing guitar (and recording it)? Probably not.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Monday, 10 October 2005 01:58 (eighteen years ago) link

You've heard of Fred's solo band Turning Shrines, yes? One album and an EP on Temple Records, IIRC. He was also the person responsible for signing Tiny Lights to Temple.

Genesis P-orridge & Thee Majesty just put out a cool album on Villa Magica (.com) here in Geneva, called "Mary Never Wanted Jesus". Track 4 is a cover of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart", rearranged by Fred Giannelli who also plays on it.
