Josh Hamilton said he has changed sinus medication and is scheduled to be tested for allergies, but he wanted to make one thing about his weakened condition perfectly clear.

"This has absolutely nothing to do with my .200 batting average," he said.

The Angels limited Hamilton to designated hitter Tuesday, one day after the right fielder came out of a game with what Manager Mike Scioscia called dizziness. Hamilton said he has had sinus and throat discomfort for about 10 days and said he hoped a change in medication would help.

He also said he has arranged for a visit to an allergist, recalling that respiratory issues would flare when he played for the Texas Rangers and that team visited its American League West rivals.

"Every time I'd come to the West Coast, it would get worse," he said.

Hamilton said his current medical issues were not related to his condition last September, when he missed five games because of dryness and blurring in his eyes. The condition was traced to excessive use of caffeine and energy drinks.

"Last September was a caffeine issue," he said. "This is an actual sickness."

Hamilton, signed for five years and $125 million, entered play Tuesday batting .212 with four home runs. His batting average, .261 on-base percentage and .605 OPS ranked among the bottom 10 in the AL.

Pujols has a partially torn plantar fascia, an injury that has bothered him most of the season. He aggravated it while running out a single in the ninth inning of Friday's 6-4 loss to Oakland.

"This is something that, talking to Albert, has been going on for six or seven years," Scioscia said before the Angels' game against Athletics. "It's been going on for a long time and he's managed it. This is a big blow to our team right now."

things are going to get better or worse (WilliamC), Sunday, 28 July 2013 20:26 (ten years ago) link

Pujols' foot is really bothering him, and he's limited to DH duty as a result, the LA Times reports. "I'm dying," Pujols said Sunday. "It's hurting real bad." The team hopes to have him play through his plantar fasciitis until he cannot tolerate the discomfort.

foolproof plan

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/scott-miller/23286878/broken-angels-tense-atmosphere-nearly-included-pujols-hunter-fight-in-2012

The two-year downhill toboggan run of owner Arte Moreno's broken franchise has created a suffocatingly tense atmosphere throughout the organization best illustrated by a team meeting last August, in which All-Star Torii Hunter had to be physically restrained from punching out $240 million man Albert Pujols.

whoa

mookieproof, Saturday, 24 August 2013 19:31 (ten years ago) link

I didn't know about the Hunter-Morneau fight. Anyway, the story seems out of character for Pujols (and very much in character for Hunter) so I'm not how much of it to believe.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 25 August 2013 10:19 (ten years ago) link

some players were unhappy when the emotional ace threw up his arms in disgust when one of the infielders dove for a ground ball and failed to make the play.

Doesn't Weaver do this pretty much all the time, though?

Andy K, Sunday, 25 August 2013 13:45 (ten years ago) link

During a 10-8 implosion the next night in which starter C.J. Wilson was cuffed for seven earned runs in 4 2/3 innings, some players grew weary of Wilson's chirping in the dugout – especially when he began giving advice to hitters. Hunter sharply told him to pipe down and the two had words in the dugout.

Immediately following that game, veteran reliever LaTroy Hawkins called for a players' only meeting. Word of the Hunter-Wilson altercation had reached the Angels' bullpen by the late innings, and Hawkins, a respected veteran then in his 18th season in the majors and now with the Mets, could identify major problems when he saw them.

In a glimpse into how fractured the Angels had become, they could not even agree on a meeting format. Hawkins called for a players-only meeting. Pujols, insisting that manager Mike Scioscia and the coaches attend, wound up co-opting the meeting.

RJ Anderson at BP:

The problems start at the top, with club owner Arte Moreno. He has a reputation for meddling and for engineering the Angels' biggest deals on his own. By backing Scioscia, Moreno has explicitly named his manager the second-most-powerful person in the organization. Perhaps that was the case already, yet this public act will impact the Angels' pursuit of their next general manager in a negative way. The job will get filled, no doubt—it's one of 30 in the world, after all—but expect the candidate pool to be shallower than it should be, given the Angels' financial might and roster.

Further complicating matters is the potential that Scioscia has a big say in who the next GM is, if it's not himself or a handpicked toady. Even if Scioscia's input in the search is limited, the next GM will inherit an outdated manager who clashes with his players and coworkers and either will not or cannot implement statistical information for his team's benefit, an act that is increasingly required in order to coach professionally, let alone manage in the majors. How lovely.

i watched that rally just now and it's silly to crucify either Street, or Calhoun for not catching a HR in the 2nd row. Altuve has a bloopy doopy fall in and then Featherston gets the last out stuck in his glove.

Baseball is a funny game as Joe Garagiola claimed.

Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia is expected to step down at the end of this season, according to a report Saturday night by The Athletic.

Scioscia is in the final year of a 10-year contract, and the decision not to seek a new contract is his alone, according to the report, which cited major league sources.
