Feel a little bad for Alaska, who really turned it up by the end, but this was ALWAYS the only possible outcome.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 16:20 (ten years ago) link

yeah I think she waited a little bit too long to really show her talents. that speech she gave last week I was like WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN

I was just kinda rooting for her because she's adorable

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 16:33 (ten years ago) link

And maybe the smartest in the bunch.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 16:36 (ten years ago) link

Alyssa aside, overall it was a very sapiosexual season for the show.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 16:37 (ten years ago) link

true! always nice to see

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 16:39 (ten years ago) link

Happily agreed on all fronts. (I noticed Jinkx graduated summa cum laude from college!)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 16:53 (ten years ago) link

yeah both Jinkx and Alaska had theater degrees, if I'm not mistaken?

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 16:54 (ten years ago) link

Sounds about right!

Meantime Eric H. weren't you going to do a runway look poll or something when the season was over

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 16:54 (ten years ago) link

also was it just me or was it kind of awkward and weird with the cutways to Jinkx and Alaska's moms in the audience. Like it was cool they were there but hearing them actually say how they felt reminded me SOOOO much of what my own Mom would say while you're kinda half covering your face muttering 'okay stop talking now'

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 16:56 (ten years ago) link

Oh yeah, I still wanna do that even though it will get four total votes.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 16:56 (ten years ago) link

xpost omg yes please runway poll!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 16:56 (ten years ago) link

A little but it's also VERRRY RuPaul in terms of happiness/health/moving on. Not a complaint, it's just how he rolls. Also everyone hopes for a little closure, I guess. I was actually bummed they didn't talk to Roxxy's drag son in the audience, or maybe they did but in the final cut they decided to keep the focus on his drag mom Erica Andrews having passed.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 17:02 (ten years ago) link

The thing about the finales now (thinking last season as well) as opposed to the earlier ones was that the earlier ones were, if just as staged/edited (of course!), then more low key/intimate/isolated, while the crownings were similarly so. The shift to this kind of full-on combined presentation changes that dynamic and I think by default a lot of things are lost that might be more easily talked about in the original way of doing things, but the flipside is just the sheer fun of it all now that a fanbase has built up -- and hey, it's actually live audiences that the queens are most used to presenting in front of, so there ya go.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 17:05 (ten years ago) link

xpost hmm I didn't think of it that way. That makes more sense now. One of the things I've really loved about the show is the way her genuine concern for the girls comes out every now and then. Like even when there's total bitchfests, it's cool the way she tempers it by being kinda caring and human. I really like seeing that.

And of course we also now know why it's "IVYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY WINTERSSSSSSSSSSSSSS." I liked how Ivy was happy to finally know herself!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 17:50 (ten years ago) link

I love that Rupaul was giving LaToya coaching, like "no, it's Edgarrrrrrrrrrr Winterrrrrrrrrrrrrrs"

Some fun here from last night's New York party. Including a kind-of cryptic hint that three coronations were filmed but nobody knew which was going to be chosen, which would make sense:

According to Jinkx, who spoke to EW over the phone this morning, there was plenty more going on backstage…

“The three of us were sitting and watching the show together,” she said. “We found out who won at the same time as America did,” and Jinkx was just as relieved to hear her name as the milling fans. That said, “We were all in tears.”

Meantime:

As for the final three, Roxxxy delivered a surprisingly crowd-lifting lip-synch to 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up?” IIn stark relief to that pageant-queen polish, Alaska took the stage in garbage bag couture that put “punked-out” attendees of last night’s Met Gala to shame. Tears streaked her face as she growled a bitterly ironic rendition of Abba’s “The Winner Takes It All” before literally being dragged off the stage like… well… yesterday’s trash. Jinkx admitted that her good friend “stole the show for a second, and I completely supported it. Why not? If you’re on that stage in your trash bag gown, you go for every last minute you can get.” She did, however, say that Alaska’s eyeliner dribbles weren’t just performance art: “The tears were real. What I love about Alaska is that she works with what she’s got going on. If she’s crying, she’ll cry, she’ll let her makeup run, and she’ll go out on stage and do the most fantastic, tearful number that she can do.”

Jinkx, of course, delivered the night’s final performance as America’s newest Drag Superstar. She had narrowed down her coronation anthem to three diva-approved contenders: Evita‘s “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” Cabaret‘s “Maybe This Time,” and “I’m the Greatest Star” from Funny Girl. In the end, she went with “Star” because “it’s certainly a song that I felt spoke to my experience on Drag Race. Funny Girl, the story of Fanny Brice, that’s something I can definitely relate to.” Plus, she added with a laugh, “‘Don’t Cry for Me Argentina’ was just a little too much for a drunk audience at 12:30 [a.m.].”

Of course, not every element of Jinkx’s victory night was so well planned — her beaded champagne coronation gown, for example. “I normally have all my stuff designed by J. Von Stratton in Seattle, but I kind of totally forgot that I needed a dress for the crowning,” Jinkx confessed. “When I got into New York two days ago, Ivy and I got drunk, and she took me dress shopping — I can’t even tell you where it came from or who designed it. I just bought the first dress that spoke to me, and it ended up being perfect.”

I just love that last part.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 20:45 (ten years ago) link

Ivy is in a relationship still, right? No kai kai there?

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 20:47 (ten years ago) link

Yup. They just hit it off as friends.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 20:48 (ten years ago) link

i want to see those lipsynch vids NOW

they did that last season too and you can totally tell bcz there's no, like, real excitement when the winner is announced on tv; you can totally tell they're acting.

And if I posted every cool thing Jinkx has been up to lately I might as well rename the thread but if you're on FB you've been getting it all there, so.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 18 May 2013 15:11 (ten years ago) link

Those fools. I have been sooo close to buying that season on iTunes for the last few weeks.

Fasten my seat belt. It's time to discover exactly why Phi Phi O'Hara was the single most hated queen in all Drag Race history.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Sunday, 19 May 2013 06:26 (ten years ago) link

ugh god she's awful, she's just bitchy and mean but not clever about it one bit

siouxsan sarandon (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 19 May 2013 08:14 (ten years ago) link

ooh I want to see Season 4! yay!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 19 May 2013 14:48 (ten years ago) link

It's definitely fun/weird to finally see the ascent of Sharon Needles after seeing Season 5; if anything I'm more used to Alaska being her own thing rather seeing her through Sharon's lens, so the two actually come across as very individual characters as a result.

Phi Phi gives off Tatianna vibes from the get-go, I have to say.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 19 May 2013 16:09 (ten years ago) link

honestly I'm kinda interested to see Willam

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 19 May 2013 16:49 (ten years ago) link

i've only watched ep 1 of S4 but Sharon Needles' runway was badass. The fake blood? ugh. so awesome.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 19 May 2013 19:34 (ten years ago) link

then again i would expect my namesake to be nothing short of rad :)

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 19 May 2013 19:35 (ten years ago) link

Willam I sorta liked and then hated and then adored once I realized how clever she actually is. I think Snatch Game was the turning point for me and I was like "ok I get it this queen is fucking smart"

siouxsan sarandon (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 19 May 2013 21:18 (ten years ago) link

willam is next level. love her.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 19 May 2013 21:26 (ten years ago) link

I love how her general drag steez seems to be 'tired LA has-been drunk in the afternoon.' That whole bored, slightly staggering in too-high heels is the best. And I love watching her get read by Phi Phi. Nothing fazes her.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 19 May 2013 21:55 (ten years ago) link

Yeah that bit in the opening credits for Untucked is hilarious. Just that pause before saying anything.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 19 May 2013 22:54 (ten years ago) link

she should play nfl. that's one hell of a block

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 19 May 2013 23:04 (ten years ago) link

i remembered last night that I hadn't quite finished season 3, so i've now only got the finale left. Man oh man the transformation of Tyra is almost unbelievable. The speech she makes in the Diva Award episode, my jaw was on the floor. Tyra is funny! and legit sincere without being weird and awkard. I already know she won but damn I can see why. No idea why tatianna made it as long as she did, it's like if you blew in her ear, pillow stuffing would come out the other side.
I loved the old-queens makeover in that season too. Some really beautiful moments in that one, such a good concept.

And I'm about 1/3 into S4. I am crushing HARD on sharon needles out of drag. jesus. She has such a good personality in general, I really like the way she is in the untucked episodes. Not at all what I expected. And I really love seeing the way Latrice is kind of taking Jiggly under her wing. Unlike Phi Phi who just turns every heartbreaking moment into a story about her, which woudl be fine if it was her moment but gaaaah would you STOP

I hope you're being a good girl & reading old TLo recaps as you watch!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:26 (ten years ago) link

Phi Phi is the worst. The WORST! Sharon & Alaska out of drag both totally crush-worthy, smart & cool.
