at this point they're about the quality of the sketches from studio 60 on the sunset strip...

x-post - who will take over Weekend Update when he takes over Fallon's old spot

curmudgeon, Monday, 13 May 2013 14:03 (ten years ago) link

I'm gonna guess John Mulaney.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 May 2013 14:05 (ten years ago) link

it seems logical to me that nbc spiked mulaney's pilot because they knew they were moving seth to fallon's spot, thus needed to promote mulaney at snl

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 May 2013 14:11 (ten years ago) link

He's only been on Update a couple of times right? Never seemed very comfortable on camera to me.

mizzell, Monday, 13 May 2013 14:13 (ten years ago) link

they'll need a new head writer too!

yeah i never understood why people seem eager for Mulaney to get an on-camera gig, he doesn't really seem built for it

seanpennderizer (some dude), Monday, 13 May 2013 14:42 (ten years ago) link

his stand up is good i think even if the bent is a bit obvious

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 May 2013 14:44 (ten years ago) link

hader out :(

goole, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 14:22 (ten years ago) link

Sad that Hader is bailing, but if Armisen leaves (long overdue) and Sudeikis leaves (he's had one foot out the door all season) and Seth Meyers moves to his late night show, that could give the writing a fresh edge and more room for whoever remains in the cast to move around a little. Kate McKinnon is obvs going to be promoted to full cast member status next season, and Aidy Bryant and Cecily Strong are possibilites. Tim Robinson seems mostly like dead weight.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 16:42 (ten years ago) link

I feel like Robinson hasn't been given much of a chance to shine. Granted, I don't remember him too well from the Second City mainstage show I saw him in, but Chicago improv/sketch folks generally seem to love him.

i, norbit (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 16:48 (ten years ago) link

New season is definitely going to signal a beginning of a new era!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 16:52 (ten years ago) link

I like Stefon as much as the next person, I guess, but what I'm really hoping for on Hader's last episode is a Herb Welch sketch.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 18:13 (ten years ago) link

Aidy Bryant has not done even one thing that I've liked to date, but to be fair they do give her a lot of the straight, unglamorous parts. But she doesn't do that well with them? Robinson also gets a lot of those kind of parts but I think he elevates them more than Bryant does.

overall this show is losing its way something terrible

Welcome to 1980 and/or 1995, eh?

Armisen out. Sudeikis maybe too.

That same source tells the Post that SNL veteran Jason Sudeikis will “probably” leave the show as well this year.

dude shit or get off the pot already

ha ha what do you care?

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 16 May 2013 16:46 (ten years ago) link

Nice send-off for them tonight. cool that they gave the solo to J. out of the 6+ guitarists onstage

If Sudeikis leaves, I will miss his dancing in the What Up With That sketches and will lament the missed opportunity for future Maine Justice sketches.

Stefon thing where they actually show you some of the crazy stuff he's been describing all these years was so lame and missing the point of the whole bit. kinda bummer that that character became Hader's SNL legacy, he was so much more than that.

yeeznuts (some dude), Sunday, 19 May 2013 12:30 (ten years ago) link

He'll always be Herb Welch to me, and 100 other characters. I always find the Stefon bits funny, but I have no idea why people get obsessed with them.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 19 May 2013 16:16 (ten years ago) link

When it started it seemed like such a New York joke. LIke for people who remember reading Details before it was a "men's" magazine. I thought it was hilarious but didn't think anybody would get the joke.

dan selzer, Sunday, 19 May 2013 16:21 (ten years ago) link

So is Sudekis out or what?

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 19 May 2013 18:11 (ten years ago) link

Overall this episode was solid, surprisingly so.

Last 10 minutes: crazy emotional, more than expected

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 19 May 2013 20:07 (ten years ago) link

Vh1 was marathoning Ben Affleck's other hosting turns, and I'd totally forgotten that Seth Meyers was SNL's John Kerry. And he wasn't too bad at it, either. Also, he was the host the weekend before the 2008 election when Tina Fey came back to do Palin with John McCain for the QVC sketch.

All of the ones I watched this afternoon were better than the one from last night.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 19 May 2013 20:56 (ten years ago) link

been pretty blase about the last few of this season. I'll miss Hader but honestly kind of psyched for a season where Thompson is top dog so I kinda hope sudeikis splits too

da croupier, Sunday, 19 May 2013 20:59 (ten years ago) link

if thompson stays and sudeikis splits, then they've got one guy who's been there a decade and the second longest running is Bobby Moynihan!

da croupier, Sunday, 19 May 2013 21:00 (ten years ago) link

Moynihan has been such a low key power player

yeeznuts (some dude), Sunday, 19 May 2013 21:03 (ten years ago) link

im super sick of sudeikis, hope hes gone for good + hope his movie career goes full piscopo too

turds (Hungry4Ass), Sunday, 19 May 2013 21:04 (ten years ago) link

Moynihan was a total sleeper. He's a genius.

The stefon send-off skit was funny because it's been so long since seeing Seth Meyers "act".

dan selzer, Sunday, 19 May 2013 21:13 (ten years ago) link

meyers on bs report said moynihan was his prediction for breakout season before this season started (i'll leave it to you guys if that happened or not). i'm guessing (hoping tbh) next season will be the killiam and mckinnon show. i'm guessing lorne will bring in a bunch of new ppl also, all the strong impressionists at second city, uccb, etc have to be drooling right now w/ hader gone. trying to remember the last bit snl beat into the ground as much as stefon that i was nevertheless not remotely tired of, i think i'd have to go back to wayne's world or something (there were alot of will farrell bits i never got tired of, bill brassky etc, but they only did those three or four times which does not come close to counting as beating into the ground on snl). curious who's gonna get that update chair, i'd predict cecily strong except her breakout character is an update character.

balls, Sunday, 19 May 2013 23:29 (ten years ago) link

curious who's gonna get that update chair

if lorne likes mulaney enough to have produced his pilot i wonder if he'll have him on the update desk

J0rdan S., Sunday, 19 May 2013 23:35 (ten years ago) link

Tough crowd

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 19 May 2013 23:36 (ten years ago) link

i think mulaney is really funny - his standup from last year (?) was excellent

Mordy , Sunday, 19 May 2013 23:46 (ten years ago) link

i keep forgetting that after all the hype the mulaney pilot actually didn't get picked up (which w/ nbc's current state of mind re: sitcoms probably means it really was as good as it was reputed to be). yeah i'd figure that's his seat if he wants it.

balls, Sunday, 19 May 2013 23:52 (ten years ago) link

i keep forgetting that after all the hype the mulaney pilot actually didn't get picked up

i said this earlier in this thread but a sensible conspiracy theory is that lorne had the pilot dropped so he could keep mulaney for seth's job

J0rdan S., Sunday, 19 May 2013 23:55 (ten years ago) link

he was funny/charming on jeselnik's panel this season too

Mordy , Sunday, 19 May 2013 23:55 (ten years ago) link

bobby moynihan is fantastic. i hope he sticks around at least a few more seasons.

leno dunham (get bent), Monday, 20 May 2013 01:00 (ten years ago) link

totally ok with more moynihan, drunk uncle is a great oft-repeated sketch, the fox and freinds sketch is stupid but hes great on it, lest we forget RIP ASS DAN
