I've seen students say grace over lunch. Teachers sing gospel songs. Benedictions at graduations. All this at public schools and not once has some government jack-booted thug come smashing through the windows to detain the citizenry. I know this is a joke but ping-pong balls do allow light to penetrate, they are somewhat translucent. So if you keep your eyes open inside the ping-pong glasses while a red light is shone at you, and focus at the brightest point you can perceive, you can be said to be 'staring at' the red light.

Ganzfeld tester as fancy dress costume comes in useful yet again...
