What's missing from the discussion of profitability of setting up cell towers is that there are tons of places in the US where a single tower serves far fewer than the "10,000" discussed above. Where my parents used to live in rural Michigan, I had service in a tiny radius, in which there were maybe 30 or 40 houses - 50 absolute tops - it was in the woods - and the roads were very low traffic. But AT&T provided service to that tiny population, and there are many, many more like it.

isn't there some law on the books mandating access to rural areas? I thought it only applied to landlines though

I expect that 10.9 will have a short-hand version of the changes - removal of linen texture, etc. - just enough for the 10.9 press release to legitimately state they're "continuing to bring the iOS and OS X experience together."

so guys i think i have to switch to verizon, cuz ATT's coverage in NH totally blows. or so i've been told.

basically trying to decide:
1 - switch to verizon now, get an iphone 5 (impending update be damned)
2 - switch to verizon now, get a samsung galaxy 4 (even tho its huge and i'm an otherwise totally apple person)
3 - switch to verizon in the fall, suffer (maybe) with ATT coverage with a few months, get the newest whatsit when it comes out
4 - ???

have you played around with a Galaxy 4 at all? I'd do that before making any type of decision tbh

i haven't, tbh. the pictures make it look lol hueg, though

kind of disgusted at how much a basic smartphone plan on verizon is, though, holy buckets. but it really is the only game in town around where i'm going to be living

Where in NH are you going to be? ATT is fine if you're south of the Notch.

really? cuz my friends and a few of my future coworkers were all "don't do ATT you'll never have decent coverage, verizon rules". based mostly on a friend of mine who has V and her boyfriend who has ATT, and is planning to switch.

cuz, tbh, my original plan was to get a Nexus 4 and switch to a prepaid (ST or Net10 or w/e)

do you Internet from your phone a lot?

Verizon has much more complete coverage, but I never had problems with ATT anywhere south of the Portland, ME/Plymouth, NH/Lebanon, NH line. Definite dead spots North of that, and particularly in Vermont. But if you look at both coverage maps they're both spotty in the less populated parts of New England.

Can you wait to see how ATT is in the area you'll be living? We actually couldn't get Verizon for years where we were in Maine so had ATT and were happy. We switched to Verizon once we could because my whole family was on it and it sucked whenever we went to NYC.

not a whole lot, tbh. monthly usage is typically <1GB (though that might change as I use Rdio more?). i check email pretty regularly, check FB sometimes, look things up on google maps and such. but i'm not a hardcore data user, i guess.

xp i'm going to be working between Hanover and Lebanon, and living out by Enfield. someone told me there's a verizon tower on the top of my workplace, but i'm guessing that's like a signal booster or something to improve the indoor coverage (which is likely to be poor, otherwise)

xxp i could definitely wait and see. the only reason not to, tbh, is because my sister needs a new phone sorta ASAP and was thinking of buying my iphone 4. in which case, i'd go down the street to the apple store (one in my hood) and get set up with verizon lickety split. other than that, though, no, waiting would be easy.

I can't believe you're moving to my old stomping grounds! I'm a not proud graduate of Lebanon High School. Well, I never had problems on visits back to my family and friends when I had ATT unless I went down in to Quechee Village.
