kind of disgusted at how much a basic smartphone plan on verizon is, though, holy buckets. but it really is the only game in town around where i'm going to be living

Where in NH are you going to be? ATT is fine if you're south of the Notch.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 18:17 (ten years ago) link

really? cuz my friends and a few of my future coworkers were all "don't do ATT you'll never have decent coverage, verizon rules". based mostly on a friend of mine who has V and her boyfriend who has ATT, and is planning to switch.

cuz, tbh, my original plan was to get a Nexus 4 and switch to a prepaid (ST or Net10 or w/e)

do you Internet from your phone a lot?

乒乓, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 18:22 (ten years ago) link

Verizon has much more complete coverage, but I never had problems with ATT anywhere south of the Portland, ME/Plymouth, NH/Lebanon, NH line. Definite dead spots North of that, and particularly in Vermont. But if you look at both coverage maps they're both spotty in the less populated parts of New England.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 18:26 (ten years ago) link

Can you wait to see how ATT is in the area you'll be living? We actually couldn't get Verizon for years where we were in Maine so had ATT and were happy. We switched to Verizon once we could because my whole family was on it and it sucked whenever we went to NYC.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 18:29 (ten years ago) link

not a whole lot, tbh. monthly usage is typically <1GB (though that might change as I use Rdio more?). i check email pretty regularly, check FB sometimes, look things up on google maps and such. but i'm not a hardcore data user, i guess.

xp i'm going to be working between Hanover and Lebanon, and living out by Enfield. someone told me there's a verizon tower on the top of my workplace, but i'm guessing that's like a signal booster or something to improve the indoor coverage (which is likely to be poor, otherwise)

xxp i could definitely wait and see. the only reason not to, tbh, is because my sister needs a new phone sorta ASAP and was thinking of buying my iphone 4. in which case, i'd go down the street to the apple store (one in my hood) and get set up with verizon lickety split. other than that, though, no, waiting would be easy.

You'll be right by Center for Cartoon Studies in WRJ!

I can't believe you're moving to my old stomping grounds! I'm a not proud graduate of Lebanon High School. Well, I never had problems on visits back to my family and friends when I had ATT unless I went down in to Quechee Village.

If you have questions about the area feel free and drop me a line via my ILX username with no spaces at yahoo.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 18:40 (ten years ago) link

thx EZ snappin! kinda my old stomping grounds, too (college daze), but it's been close to a decade since i've been back (except for the job interview, of course). didn't notice terrible service at the time of the interview, really, but it definitely wasn't ~great~

I hope you like your return to the Upper Valley! It changes, but not as much as you'd think.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 18:51 (ten years ago) link

i really hope that picture isn't where they're going with it - feels like a copy of the windows phone interface

Nhex, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 19:13 (ten years ago) link

it'll be more flat but not like in that image

markers, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 19:16 (ten years ago) link

i mean, not in the same exact way. a little less like metro i'd guess

markers, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 19:16 (ten years ago) link

i mean, whatever it takes to get rid of that terrible Game Center aesthetic, but there are limits

Nhex, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 19:35 (ten years ago) link

i just realized i repeated your "i mean" without... meaning to

Nhex, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 19:37 (ten years ago) link

I'm all for ditching the green-felt Game Center, leather-bound Find My Friends, and skeuomorphisms that reference real-life things that nobody under 50 has used routinely, but I don't get why the elegant photorealistic iconery should be trashed in favor of dull, featureless textures. Who needs a retina display if the graphics are going to look like Windows 3.1 - or even Windows Phone 8.

tbh I would like every icon to transform into a screaming mouth when activated

I happen to like the linen background. I don't look at it go "oooh, it looks like real linen!", it's just a nice featureless texture.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 21:23 (ten years ago) link

linen being in the notification slider is wrong wrong wrong

the Quim of Bendigo (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 28 May 2013 21:25 (ten years ago) link

i'm with Lee on this

Nhex, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 21:27 (ten years ago) link

Jony Ive has inspired the iOS design team to replace many of the linen and leather textures found in iOS, such as in the iPad Calendar app, with flat white and black coloring. For instance, Apple’s Notification Center drop-down panel currently has a dark linen background. In iOS 7, according to people familiar with the software, this design becomes a dark grey/black color with white text.

markers, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 21:27 (ten years ago) link

yes, and it's an improvement

the Quim of Bendigo (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 28 May 2013 21:31 (ten years ago) link

why they ever thought background linen should sit over other things is just baffling

one thing to factor in here is that data compression is pretty good on the iphone - I have 3 folks w/ iphones on a shared 4GB plan and we never go over. not sure if the newer android phones are an improvement but when my wife had an android she used 3x as much data as I did, and all she ever did was facebook & play wordfeud.

not specifically familiar w/ NH but generally speaking verizon is signal king in the northeast. you'll pay more but it's worth it, and their customer service is great.

Data compression is what it is, isn't it? I mean, the iPhone is not recompressing JPGs or MP3s or anything.

different devices handle these things differently, and I'd broaden it beyond data compression, maybe data consumption management is a better term? fer instance, blackberrys consume minimal amounts of data, though they're using the same http protocol as other phones. there are studies showing that androids consume more data on average than iphones. pro-google folks claim it's because android is so awesome that people can't help downloading everything in sight, but I suspect it has more to do with how the app dev libraries handle connections, and what the OS is designed to do when it's *not* in use.

looks like the latest beta of android chrome has a data compression option, however it accomplishes this by sending all requests through google servers. no ulterior motive there, I'm sure. :/

xp

I've been checking out apple tv a bit. is it any good? I use the netflix and youtube apps on my blu ray player quite a lot, but they are pretty terrible, especially youtube. Is apple tv an improvement? I'd mostly use it for those 2, plus streaming spotify, and maybe buying/renting some cable shows from itunes. worthwhile?

Moodles, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 21:31 (ten years ago) link

I like my Roku 3 better than my parents' Apple TV, it has a wide selection of channels to install - I have HBO Go, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu (until I dropped H+), UFC.tv, MLBTV, PBS, etc. plus there are options for on-demand movies. I also use my desktop as a Plex server and run 720p and 1080p movies to my TV via the Roku Plex client.

If you can buy/rent shows from Amazon rather than iTunes, I'd choose the Roku.

also: go 3 rather than the 2 XS or other models - the processor upgrade has made using it a much smoother experience

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 21:36 (ten years ago) link

apple tv is pretty sweet imo, use it for netflix, hulu plus, itunes rentals, youtube, etc and it works great

A new, cheaper iPod Touch quietly launched today, replacing the holdover 4th-gen model with a 5th-gen 16mb version without the 5MP rear camera (or wrist strap). Silver only. $229 / £199.

and in his absence, she (Lee626), Thursday, 30 May 2013 21:51 (ten years ago) link

I bet alot of ppl will order this and not realize until too late it doesn't have a rear camera (which I use frequently - that alone easily makes the 32gb model worth the extra cost IMO)
