― Moodles, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 21:01 (ten years ago) link
ugh some people really take that shit too far. my old roommate's Dad had a lot of that in him -- threw her in the pool to teach her how to swim and then walked away. literally MADE her learn to walk because he was tired of her crawling. like, put her on her feet as an infant, and if she fell would leave her there until she figured out how to get up on her own.
it's one thing not to help kids when they're figuring things out themselves. but he was DECIDING his daughter's development, and then acting like it was her choice to drown in the fucking pool.
still makes me angry

It’s not my job to sooth their fear and discomfort. In fact, sometimes after my daughters fall asleep ill pay a stranger to stand in the corner of their bedroom and stare at them all night long. It’s not my job to unlock my bedroom door at 3am when my daughters are outside screaming about some strange guy in their room staring at them.If I do, I have robbed them of the opportunity to learn to calm themselves, assess their situation, and try to problem solve their own way out of it.It’s not my job to keep them from falling. Yes, the second story window is probably their only escape. If they end up permanently paralyzed from the waist down, they will survive the disappointment. What's more, they will have a goal, avoiding the strange staring man at night while not waking up mommy, and the incentive to work to achieve it.

The so-called tiger mother diatribe seems heaps worse

― another sub-standard post from (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 30 May 2013 15:09 (ten years ago) link
It could have been framed a whole lot differently. As it was, it dishes out a little dose of hostility toward other parents/adults and insists on creating enemies out them for her to do battle against. Why not just write about how kids need to be allowed to take risks for their healthy development?

Mark, can you cite tour source? I'm not trying top enter into an argument. Its just that I've seen that repeated a few times in ilx and I'm useless at finding the original data.

― how's life, Friday, 31 May 2013 11:12 (ten years ago) link
oic.
No, purely my 'impression'..
If some paedo molests a child, and the only witness is the child, why would they let the child live if there is the threat of a death penalty?
― Mark G, Friday, 31 May 2013 11:14 (ten years ago) link
Also, it's one thing for a child growing up scared of the perpetrator, it does not follow that the child would grow up without fear or guilt if "It's OK, that man has been killed because.."
Anyway, moving on...
