this has some actual intel on what might be revealed

I'm all for ditching the green-felt Game Center, leather-bound Find My Friends, and skeuomorphisms that reference real-life things that nobody under 50 has used routinely, but I don't get why the elegant photorealistic iconery should be trashed in favor of dull, featureless textures. Who needs a retina display if the graphics are going to look like Windows 3.1 - or even Windows Phone 8.

tbh I would like every icon to transform into a screaming mouth when activated

I happen to like the linen background. I don't look at it go "oooh, it looks like real linen!", it's just a nice featureless texture.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 21:23 (ten years ago) link

linen being in the notification slider is wrong wrong wrong

i'm with Lee on this

Jony Ive has inspired the iOS design team to replace many of the linen and leather textures found in iOS, such as in the iPad Calendar app, with flat white and black coloring. For instance, Apple’s Notification Center drop-down panel currently has a dark linen background. In iOS 7, according to people familiar with the software, this design becomes a dark grey/black color with white text.

markers, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 21:27 (ten years ago) link

yes, and it's an improvement

the Quim of Bendigo (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 28 May 2013 21:31 (ten years ago) link

why they ever thought background linen should sit over other things is just baffling

the Quim of Bendigo (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 28 May 2013 21:32 (ten years ago) link

not a whole lot, tbh. monthly usage is typically <1GB (though that might change as I use Rdio more?). i check email pretty regularly, check FB sometimes, look things up on google maps and such. but i'm not a hardcore data user, i guess.

one thing to factor in here is that data compression is pretty good on the iphone - I have 3 folks w/ iphones on a shared 4GB plan and we never go over. not sure if the newer android phones are an improvement but when my wife had an android she used 3x as much data as I did, and all she ever did was facebook & play wordfeud.

not specifically familiar w/ NH but generally speaking verizon is signal king in the northeast. you'll pay more but it's worth it, and their customer service is great.

Data compression is what it is, isn't it? I mean, the iPhone is not recompressing JPGs or MP3s or anything.

different devices handle these things differently, and I'd broaden it beyond data compression, maybe data consumption management is a better term? fer instance, blackberrys consume minimal amounts of data, though they're using the same http protocol as other phones. there are studies showing that androids consume more data on average than iphones. pro-google folks claim it's because android is so awesome that people can't help downloading everything in sight, but I suspect it has more to do with how the app dev libraries handle connections, and what the OS is designed to do when it's *not* in use.

looks like the latest beta of android chrome has a data compression option, however it accomplishes this by sending all requests through google servers. no ulterior motive there, I'm sure. :/

xp

I've been checking out apple tv a bit. is it any good? I use the netflix and youtube apps on my blu ray player quite a lot, but they are pretty terrible, especially youtube. Is apple tv an improvement? I'd mostly use it for those 2, plus streaming spotify, and maybe buying/renting some cable shows from itunes. worthwhile?

Moodles, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 21:31 (ten years ago) link

I like my Roku 3 better than my parents' Apple TV, it has a wide selection of channels to install - I have HBO Go, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu (until I dropped H+), UFC.tv, MLBTV, PBS, etc. plus there are options for on-demand movies. I also use my desktop as a Plex server and run 720p and 1080p movies to my TV via the Roku Plex client.

If you can buy/rent shows from Amazon rather than iTunes, I'd choose the Roku.

also: go 3 rather than the 2 XS or other models - the processor upgrade has made using it a much smoother experience

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 21:36 (ten years ago) link

apple tv is pretty sweet imo, use it for netflix, hulu plus, itunes rentals, youtube, etc and it works great

A new, cheaper iPod Touch quietly launched today, replacing the holdover 4th-gen model with a 5th-gen 16mb version without the 5MP rear camera (or wrist strap). Silver only. $229 / £199.

and in his absence, she (Lee626), Thursday, 30 May 2013 21:51 (ten years ago) link

I bet alot of ppl will order this and not realize until too late it doesn't have a rear camera (which I use frequently - that alone easily makes the 32gb model worth the extra cost IMO)

and in his absence, she (Lee626), Thursday, 30 May 2013 22:12 (ten years ago) link

Was nosying about the UK store there looking at that and realised you still can't buy a Mac Pro in Europe. WTH, Apple

My high capacity self is doomed. The 320 GB model I long for will never happen ;_;

xp... had something to do with EU regulations iirc

sofatruck, Friday, 31 May 2013 01:31 (ten years ago) link

Yep, thy may be announcing a major update soon, and the old one's didn't conform to new EU regulations.

Who needs a retina display if the graphics are going to look like Windows 3.1 - or even Windows Phone 8.

I think the exact opposite, lower resolution screens benefit from things like gradients, and photo-realism to hide the block ones of the pixels. When you have HiDPI/retina displays you don't need to do this because the crispness of shapes in less opulent rendering looks extremely nice. I think my Windows phone has a higher pixel density than and apple product, and did look absolutely superb until I shattered the screen.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 31 May 2013 09:44 (ten years ago) link

*any* apple product.

Here’s a recent piece on the Mac Pro:

http://www.macrumors.com/2013/04/08/rumor-suggests-replacement-for-mac-pro-due-in-april-or-may/

Buying one at the moment even if you could get one would be strongly discouraged!

wwdc is in two weeks.

at least wait until then.

markers, Friday, 31 May 2013 13:46 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, even if they were on sale you'd obviously want to wait, but it's a bit o_O all the same that they haven't had them available here for months now.
