Ah, I'd forgotten about Short and Julia. I remember the David Spade kerfuffle, but figured Eddie had let it go. Evidently not.

Norm and Crystal came back for the 25th Anniversary special too. McDonald joked in his segment that he was just passing through on the way to a party at Eddie Murphy's. Hadn't realized Crystal never came back to host--I saw him on the 90s Muppet Show fer chrissakes!

Maybe it had something to do with being 21 in 1995, but I loved that season. Polar bear sketch and everything.

one month passes...

Not a surprise, but after a will he/won't he atmosphere for two seasons, Sudeikis has left: http://tvline.com/2013/07/24/jason-sudeikis-leaving-saturday-night-live-snl-official/

four weeks pass...

Auditioning for SNL.

Shart Week (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 22 August 2013 17:05 (ten years ago) link

HADER My audition was me as Vinny Vedecci, doing Al Pacino talking to his maid staff. Tony Blair talking about the new “Star Wars” movie in Parliament. James Mason with an expired gift certificate for a dozen doughnuts.

would kill to see this

That was the only thing in the piece that made me laugh out loud.

He elaborates a little on his SNL audition of the episode of WTF he did with Marc Maron a few weeks back.

This is like the epitome of Will Ferrell:

I [had come] in with a briefcase full of counterfeit money that I’d bought at a toy store. And in the middle of whatever Lorne was going to say, I was going to start stacking the equivalent of $25,000 on his desk. “Listen, Lorne, you and I can say whatever we want to say. But we really know what talks, and that’s money. I’m going to walk out of this room, and you can either take this money or not. And I can be on the show.” But it was just not a joking atmosphere. It was just tense. And I never get to do my gag.

Beck Bennett, John Milhiser, Kyle Mooney, Mike O'Brien, Noel Wells and Brooks Wheelan will join the troupe as "SNL" enters its 39th season on Sept. 28.

http://adage.com/article/digital/t-funnyman-beck-bennett-headed-snl/243842/

Bennett is the straight man/ guy who talks to the kids on those A T & T phone commercials

curmudgeon, Monday, 16 September 2013 15:57 (ten years ago) link

Three exit, one moves to the writers room, and six come in. Seems crowded, and I wonder if it means Kenan and Jay (and Nasim?) get pushed to the fringes as everyone else tries to out-white each other.

I suspect Bennett will be utilized as the straight man/authority figure in the Hartman/Sudeikis tradition. Of course, I only know him from the commercials, so I could be completely wrong about his demeanor.

I predict that Bennett will steal the 2013-2014 season with a new character named Pantsless Putin

“SNL’s” all-white, predominantly male casting call got some minor criticism, but many defended the decision by arguing that the cast of 16 performers, which currently includes three people of color (and six women), approximately reflects the demographics of a nation in which white people are the majority.

Mordy , Friday, 27 September 2013 15:28 (ten years ago) link

i'm more outraged when i see the writing staff for daily show or colbert, they appear to be 99% white men.

best article ending ever

smang culture (DJP), Friday, 27 September 2013 15:33 (ten years ago) link

Was talking about this during the Emmy's. Noted that Jimmy Kimmel wins for having a writing staff that actually had considerably larger amounts of women then any of the other late night variety shows up for awards.

dan selzer, Friday, 27 September 2013 15:50 (ten years ago) link

This is just the first step in Lorne's plan for an accurate representation of global demographics, along with the advent of SNL Mexico (which, yes, is a real thing that's happening and that I wouldn't even be aware of if people I know hadn't auditioned for the cast). I look forward to SNL Laos and SNL Côte d'Ivoire (the improv scene there is off the hook).

“I think there’s lots of parts of America that could care less about ‘Saturday Night Live,’” Becker added. “Lots of African-Americans, lots of gays and lesbians. And Dr Morbius, for sure."

They can keep doing the tipsy ex-porn stars-selling-things commercial sketches forever, and I'll laugh at all of them.

It's no secret I'm a Kate McKinnon stan, but I want to see them develop her smoking ER doctor from the cold open into a proper character.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 29 September 2013 07:34 (ten years ago) link

IAWTC. Both of them, though I doubt they'll ever top "my eye got sucked out by a butt."

I had never heard Arcade Fire before last night, I had no idea they sound like that, it was funny.

JacobSanders, Sunday, 29 September 2013 17:23 (ten years ago) link

i've only heard them a little but this is some new direction right? James Murphy produced disco new wave? With dubbed out 12" style b-side mixes?

dan selzer, Sunday, 29 September 2013 17:39 (ten years ago) link

they don't usually! def a new direction for them

the Phantom Zone moment was kinda o_O

Neanderthal, Sunday, 29 September 2013 17:46 (ten years ago) link

Kenan screaming "NO! YOU GET NO LINES! YOU GOT TO EARN THAT!" was p hilarious

Neanderthal, Sunday, 29 September 2013 17:46 (ten years ago) link

AF mix not only sounded horrible, but was kind of hilarious in that the conga player was apparently playing his ass off, yet no congas could be heard.

hopping and bopping to the krokodil rot (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 29 September 2013 18:47 (ten years ago) link

Really? I actually took note of how loud the congas were at the beginning of the second song.

These are funny, but I also find them really depressing!

Geoffrey Schweppes (jaymc), Sunday, 29 September 2013 19:06 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, they over-corrected on the second song; one conga was awkwardly louder than the other (and nearly everything else in the mix).

hopping and bopping to the krokodil rot (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 29 September 2013 19:07 (ten years ago) link

I could barely tell any of the new cast members apart, but I loved all the hazing. Drunk Uncle was better than usual, I thought.

Are The Arcade Fire more of a synthy band now? Maybe now I would actually dig them. I liked the lone new wavey song on their last record, "Sprawl 2."

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 29 September 2013 19:43 (ten years ago) link

AF worked with James Murphy on the new album, so it's definitely different than they've sounded in the past.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 29 September 2013 21:00 (ten years ago) link

"Sprawl 2" was prob their high point so far I think (though hearing it at every fucking dance party for 6 months kinda killed it)
